It is a HP Dual-Core Windows 7 Home

Premium (64-bit) WLAN and Bluetooth

DVD optical Drive

I want to get off to the right start with this computer.

I wanted it to use when we go to the lake...just for

fun. We do not get cell phone signals there,and TV is

bad too. I will be getting DSL.

I just took it out of the box....please start at the beginning with me. I've used Windows 7 just a little, and I like IE ( guess I'm the only one)

I forgot to say, I bought a wireless mouse, since I use a mouse. The computer is AMD.

If mine I'd put the battery in, hook the ac adapter up. Turn it on. Explore things.

I would maybe instantly make the Restore DVD's before I did anything else then next from Control Panels, Back Up and Restore.... on the left margin make a Image file to DVD's. So I could quickly put it back in 'out of the box' shape... should I need to some day.

Maybe hold off starting lots of things.. look in Control Panel, Program & features. Kind of compare what is installed for programs to the Icons on the desktop.
Some of the junk items will not be installed until you start them up the first time. Lots will be TrialWare programs that usually come with new computers that will Want money in the months to come.

You can decide if you want the AntiVirus program that came with it... and some of the other programs probably too before running them.. Sure is lots cleaner to get rid of them if never installed to begin with.

I have an older Canon MP 750 (which is the 780 without a fax) its this huge work horse I got at Amazon for 120.00. Now there's a few left for around 300.00!!! It does everything but the laundry...without a fax. When new models come out, older models are drastically reduced...whether they are good or bad. Watch the discounts and read as many customer reviews as you can...no matter which company's model you are considering. Everybody makes a dud now and then. Every company has marketed a product that should have never been made. Read the customer reviews on Amazon, Cnet, New Egg, and Epinions. You don't have to study them. If a particular product won't work as advertised, it will be readily obvious. marf

How about trying another site that offers the New York Times Crossword and see if it will print for you. The Seattle Times also offers the New York Times Crossword by Will Shortz, the same fellow who does them on your Arkansas paper. On the Seattle Times page, click on the printer icon. On the next "page" select "puzzle with blank diagram" (it may already be selected). Click "OK" The puzzle should appear. Click on the printer icon. If the puzzle doesn't appear, then you probably don't have a PDF viewer installed on your computer. It's worth a try, however, especially if it works for you. Let us know. Interesting that someone considers Macs better value for money, because here in Europe I find that I can get a lot more of everything for my money with IBM compatible hardware. I can get a faster processor, more ram, bigger hard drive, and I have a much greater choice of manufacturers and suppliers. I like the choices and there is more potential for money savings when there is such a wide market. Anyway, prices aside, there has always been this debate between Macs and PCs, but the comparison can be very misleading. It's as if you can have a Mac box or a Windows box on your desk. People talk far more about the software than they do the hardware. To the average computer user what happens inside the box under the monitor isn't a big deal, provided it happens fast and reliably. That's why I like IBM compatible hardware. The x86 processor is also the one which has the biggest selection of compatible software. This is why it's so misleading to treat IBM compatibles as windows boxes when compairing them to Macs. I have an IBM compatible computer and I do not run any MS software on it. I could if I felt the need, but considering the vast selection of good software out there I don't. I mostly use linux, although the number of operating systems for x86 computers is huge. I also, ironically, find that the supplied media programs with linux such as open office are more compatible with windows files than windows ever has been. I can read files from any variant MS office, while windows XP complains the file type from older versions is not supported and simply refuses to open them. And when I save a file I get a vast range of choices, in fact I can save it in any number of native formats as well as other computer formats, including MS formats for sharing with other people - and I can even choose which edition of MS office standard to use so that I can share files with older computers. XP doesn't offer that, and it's an actual MS product. I like x86 computers best because they can run almost any program you want and access nearly any data you could want to read. A Mac that can be a Mac or run windows isn't that exiting really, in fact most Mac programs are available for windows anyway and the windows versions tend to be a lot cheaper. I don't like having to re-start in different modes either, I find that with time you get more dependant on one mode than the other. And constantly wish you could instantly access a bit of data from a file in the other OS, or quickly run a specific program which would do exactly what you want if only it didn't mean dropping everything you're doing and re-booting. I would bet anything that within 6 months most Mac users have pretty much ended up exclusively using just one OS. I like seamless stuff and I find I can run emulators much more seamlessly on my IBM compatible, even to the point where I forget what programs are native to linux and which ones aren't.

I agree do your backup image as they urge you to do this way you have a way to restore to the original state should you need to.

I would suggest using ninite.com to get all the programs you want from one place and they make sure no additional junk is installed. Also look at pcdecrapifier.com for removing the bloat junk that comes on new computer.

One of the first things to do once online is get your windows updates and updates for all of your other essential programs, including flash, java, adobe and antivirus. You can use secunia osi scanner to help you find what you need.

Be sure to check the security center of the pc to make sure that the windows firewall is on.

The best source for all things windows 7 I recommend the seven forum, great information and tutorials. Www.sevenforums.com

before I can start...
I'm excited...just can't imagine being able to connect
when we go to the woods!

The right start (IMHO) would be to install the antivirus and anti-malware programs of your choice. Keep them updated and use them regularly to protect your computer. Also, even though you'll be using IE I recommend installing a second web browser. You don't have to use it, but it's always good to have one ready to go just in case.

Regarding the mouse. I recently purchased a Logitech wireless mouse after reading good reports but it was a miserable experience at first. No CD came with it and Windows 7 installed the drivers so we should be good to go right?

Not so, on investigation I am informed on the Logitech site that I need to install Logitech Setpoint. Now the mouse is behaving so you might consider this once you have the initial stuff recommended above set up.

About a month ago bought a microsoft notebook wireless mouse 3500 .. blue ray, works on pants or chair arm..etc. .... I'm impressed.. works fine with or without the Intellipoint mouse software. Tiny usb radio. Just enough to grab and pull out. $17 @ newegg with free ship.

Feels and works about same as the old reliable ms usb wired wheel mouse in clicks & wheel. Put a Eveready rechargeable 2200ma long life in it .. been a month so far on that one charge & it stays on 24/7 .
Might order a duplicate 2nd spare mouse, for when it bounces off floor one time too many. About 8 yrs of 100% touchpad or keyboard wobble stick .. using a mouse now makes me wonder how I did that 8 years without one.

Touchpad on the new Lenovo has a textured paint on it.. terrible for sliding fingers to bump over. It sucks. Maybe someday I'll tape it off and sand/repaint.. and see what happens.
