organizing bookmarks in FF--totally lost!

I have the FF browser 3.0.8 browser. I went to the help section to find out how to sort my bookmarks, and they might as well have written it in Chinese. Can anyone give me simple, step-by-step directions to get my overgrown list organized into folders?

I have WXP on the PC.

Mostly I Right click and add new folder, drag & drop it where I want and drag&drop stuff into it.

Firefox is used rarely here,,, uses too much of windows resorces and is slower and no activeX for using the good stuff. Plus it can't spell much better than I can.

Mikie, are those instructions for FF bookmarks? I've never been able to drag and drop like I can in IE. Just tried again and nothing.

I'm trying to get accustomed to FF but the bookmarks have me completely baffled.

I lost 'spell check' years ago on Firefox. I could not get it back and it disappeared on all my computers (XP and Win 7). Never could find the solution and tried the various fixes FF offers. Just wondering if anyone gets 'spell-check' on FF anymore? Lynn, sorry to jump in on your post but glad to know you found a fix. Jane

memo...glad to meet you! I'm pretty new to this forum too. I found this technique invaluable for keeping/finding my ton of links. In fact, I have two personal groups...one is for myself only and the many things I like..plus the other things I don't want to lose on the computer if it ever crashes again...like everyone's email addresses, online shopping sites I use, I even keep track of my online names and passwords (althoug these are written in code...just in case)..I just type this info under the link for the site. The other main one I have is for polymer clay..and I have included a few of my closest friends to be members so they can share the links there...I think that is a good idea too, to use this technique for a small sewing group, charity group, church group...etc. Everyone can share the info from one single sourse. Nancy, I love those clever shoe-storing ottomans; I wish I had the need for yet another ottoman. I confess to having an out-of-hand shoe situation, and I really need to address it before DH throws them (and ME!) out on the driveway. Fact is, I like shoes. A lot. My problem is I don't have one of those humongous walk-in closets with dedicated shoe storage, it is smaller, and I have had to improvise- with tiered racks, with those hanging shoe thingies, and just shoving them here and there. Mostly they end up in various places after I wear them. I am fooling myself if I think that I will dutifully bring the ones I wear the most back upstairs. I told DH the other day that I was going to address this situation, and I will. I am thinking about sticking a little tiered wired rack into our front hall closet, and will line up some of the most often used shoes there. That is the closet he throws them in when they assault his visual space. OR maybe I will install shelves, low to the floor, where I can make the most of the space. I will need to ponder this. I also want to see ML's kitchen reveal!

Chiming in to say that, as a Southern girl, we were all brought up to say to our elders: "Yes, Sir" and "No, M'am." Of course that has gone the way of the dinosaur now. Once in a great while, now that I live in Charleston, SC, I hear some of the college students use these terms to their elders. As for "you guys" and "y'all", I am afraid that both are here to stay. It is just part of the changing slang of the American scene. Language is a living entity, not engraved in stone, although, there is a movement to bring back spoken Latin.... I am in a French conversation group. When I use slang I learnt in Paris in the 60's, I am corrected by our native Francaise, who will tell me: "Oh that is so outdated; we now have a new slang term for so and so, etc." And so it goes...

I too do the 'create new folder' and then drag and drop.

The drag and drop is usually quite easy and obvious once one has done a bit of practice. Sometimes if I is putting folders within folders within other folders I must drag and drop once and then drag and drop a second time. I cannot figure out why I often fail to drag into the third or fourth folder.

BTW, I too thought the instructions were poor and the maintenance and organization of bookmarks not obvious.

I can drag and drop firefox bookmarks around from the regular bookmarks list, and also from within the organize bookmarks window(which I have no idea how that organized interface is supposed to work).

IE favorites seem instantly simple compaired to FF bookmarks, suspect I'm just more used to IE.

click on bookmarks then organize bookmarks expand all bookmarks from there you can create new folders and move things to various folders, hilight the one you want to do something to.

I just did a quick check and it seems to work fine for me:

CTRL-B to open bookmarks at left. Then drag the SYMBOL that's in front of the address into the bookmark FOLDER NAME (not into the body of the list). (You're basically dropping the link onto the folder's NAME).

You can do the same thing with the bookmarks toolbar for your most used stuff. Be sure to rename it something short, so you can squeeze more links onto the toolbar. (right click the link, then properties...)

Sorting bookmarks into new folders is simply a drag and drop exercise (again, dropping link SYMBOLS into the folder NAMES (after you create them.). They can be shuffled around within the folder that way, as well.
