The tub in our previous home was reglazed a year before we moved in. Within a few years, the glaze was peeling (all over!) and we had a mess. Some people say this is rare, but many other people have told me that the same thing happened to them. So, personally, I would never get a tub reglazed.

s8thrd, thank you! I googled your complaint about peeling and found many sites where even the professionals say a high quality coating only lasts 5-10 years, depdending on the paint type, and only if you take care of it correctly.

Also, this is a tub/shower combo, so the finish has to withhold the stress of two showers a day, execpt on the rare occasion when we bathe. I dye my hair a few times a year, and now I've read it's not recommended to use hair dye in a reglazed tub.

Since we plan on being in the house for 20 years, we will replace!

It isn't so much the usage and water, as it is the likelihood of chipping. Once the paint surface is chipped - especially in showers, one does drop things and knock stuff around, if you don't touch it up immediately, water gets underneath and 'lifts' the paint right up. BTW, it's a similar formula to auto paint.

We reglazed a tub that is used only by my MIL, who takes tub baths and is accustomed to being careful with reglazed tubs, since she had that done in her previous home. Also, taking the tub out would mean a hideous job ripping the floor tile out as well, which has a 3" thick mortar base. I was told it would easily cost $1200-1500 just to do the floor in this 6x9 bathroom.

I agree with your decision. For hard usage in the main bathroom, replacing is a much better solution since you're already having so much work done. Reglazing is best saved for situation where one just need a visual 'touch-up'. BTW, our reglaze installers told us it can easily be redone if we wanted to change colors. We're going on 6 yrs with the reglazed tub, no problems but it's treated with 'kid gloves.'

I was thinking of reglazing becausevreplacement of the tub would cost $4,000 + tub cost. My contractor highly recommended against it so I decide to skip it.

Thanks for all the continued input! I appreciate it because some time next year, we'll spruce up the kids bathroom (which also is completely original to 1970s).

Their tile tub surround is in great condition so, based on feedback here, I'll probably just reglaze the harvest gold tub in there in a neutral color and do a complete replacement of the master tub since we are ripping out 90% of the room.

We had our tub reglazed just before Labor Day. The care directions said to wait 24 hours before using , DRY after using, not to use a bath matt with the suction (after awhile it "pulls" on the glaze or something). Recommended cleaning with Clorox Clean Up (spray) or Simple Green.
I do dry it down after using, mostly the front end.
Tile & around spigots & especially around the drain!
I guess I did it backwards, I had the tub reglazed 1st then the new floor, toilet & vanity installed. Needless to say the contractor chipped the tub............He had the tub guy come out & fix the chips. I asked the guy about around the drain, it is peeling a little. I told him I try to keep it dry...... He said, yes, sometimes water pools there & gets under the drain & that is what happens.
He touched that up for me too. I know every once in awhile our faucet drips water. Sooo, since I can't be home all day to check it I decided to put a little plastic tub over drain to catch any water that may drip out.
I know it sounds wacky but I just want to see if it peels again. The other day when I was drying my hair I took the dryer over to the tub to dry around the drain but it didn't reach! I need an extension cord!

WE have an old house, with the bathroom redone in the 1960's tile on the walls. I just couldn't afford a total remodel so left the tile & tub alone except for the reglazing............
All in all it still looks 100% better than before.
It was a mess from all those years of scrubbing with cleanser, poor tub........
