Waterproof concrete sealers are too expensive
Comments (19)7 year old trivia question on how water features worked 2000 years ago...credit doesn't go to cement mixes, they leaked plenty. The secret is they had a continuous water source. Aqueduct, ditches and even pipes diverted water from streams at higher elevation, ran into fountains (no pumps needed) and then out of the fountain into maybe a bath house and then thru a sewer and on away from the city. So it was OK for stuff to leak some. Curious to hear how the wax thing worked out. Best sealer I've found is no sealer. Liner covered with concrete or mortar. Has never failed me and is super cheap and easy. Pretty hard to mess up. Allows very reliable pipe penetrations. I also prefer the look of aged concrete so that can be done too. Sealers require stable concrete. Different sealers can span some tiny cracks but even hairline cracks can cause failure. Which is why swimming pools and professionally built concrete ponds and water features are so thick and use so much steel. Concrete over liner only needs 1" or so of concrete and no steel (steel is bad in this case). If the outside of the fountain is to be visible you create in a standard way, thick and steel. Then liner and another 1" of concrete. Only you will know there's a liner....See MoreStained concrete after removing ceramic tile-Can this be done?
Comments (6)it depends on your concrete. every job is unique, so we have no idea how easy or difficult it will be to remove the thinset, plus the amount of residue that may be left. It also depends how thorough the person(s) is/are who are doing the work and their degree of expertise in this area. Anotehr consideration is the type of setting bed and type of thiset used (mubbed or thinset, polymer/latex fortified or unfortified regular thinset). it also depends on your expectations of overall looks as well. if it was sealed concrete then you have a much better chance of being satisfied with the outcome because the thinset may come up easier than it would on unfinished and/ot rough concrete....See MoreTile ideas needed to create expensive tile for less...please
Comments (10)hi remodelfla, I'm not sure you would be interested in this, it is probably not what you want, BUT I saw this bathroom that Sarah R. did using Lowe's tiles. The overall look is great, there are white subways, cream tiles, gray pencil tile, and the floor is an inexpensive marble that she laid with a mesh marble subway tile cut to make the border. If you look at the details closely you can see how they did it all. I think it really gives a high end look for not a lot of money. Here is one picture, if you want more, just let me know, I have some close ups. They also used a white chair rail tile to cap it off as it went around the room. In other parts of the room they simply used the cream tile from floor up, then hit the gray pencil, white subway, gray pencil, white chair....See Moreless expensive way to get glass door look
Comments (19)Multiple thoughts: - Ultimately, if this is the look you want, you already have the price for it. To get a lesser price, something must change. - I agree with the poster who says this look won't be ideal with what amounts to 7' ceilings ... I suspect your upper cabinets will look "squatty". - You could put mirrors instead of glass in the upper cabinets. Why is this cheaper? You don't need to finish the interior of the cabinets, as you would with glass. Since they'll be at ceiling height, it'd take an eagle eye to tell the difference. - You say you have soffits above the cabinets. You could put fake mirror doors on the soffits. Since they'll be at ceiling height, it'd take an eagle eye to tell the difference. Again, ceiling height ... hard to tell. - Instead of glass in ALL those upper cabinets, you could go with plain cabinets ... except for the corner cabinet. Make it alone glass. This gives you a touch of glass, but only in ONE splurge- spot. Personally, for the circumstances you describe, I think I'd go this direction....See Morefayemarie
