30' Double Oven Ranges: GE Profile vs. Electrolux

I am reodeling my kitchen and am so undecided about my range. I have narrowed it down to these two:

GE Profile model# PGB918SEMSS

Electrolux model# EW30GF65GS

I love all the "extras" on the Electrolux, like the roller over racks and the stay-open oven door feature. I have a concern about the lower over because I have read on this forum and others that it takes a long time to heat up and that it doesn't cook well. Does everyone have this experience with te Electrolux? Does the GE lower over perform better? I am concerned about spending extra money to get a lower oven and then have it turn out to be useless.

Also, on each of these models, is the lower oven gas or electric? I couldn't find that information on the manufacturers' websites.

Oh, and I forgot to say that these models have gas burners and a gas main oven (not sure about the lower ovens).

I am not sure how useful this will be. I replaced an electric smoothtop (I hate them!) in my house in Oregon with an Electrolux Wavetouch 5 burner dual fuel LP range. I only lived there full time for about a year with the range before relocating to Maine. Am not sure what the fascination with smooth tops, but I ended up with another one in the place I have purchased in Maine, its dual burner died after 4 months of use. I decided to replace it with the 30" all LP Berta range and am taking advantage of the hood promotion (BTW, they retail for $1,200). My place is heated with an LP based European type hydronic radiant heat units and a LP fireplace, so adding cooking should not tax my 300 gallon LP tank, LOL! I was looking for a range that is decidedly "manual" without an electronic interface due to the wind and subsequent power outages that are to common in this part of the state. I was also advised of service problems with the electronic interfaces on the Electroluxes, even though my range in Oregon has not had a service problem as of yet, knock on wood (am a reluctant landlord). Initially, I planned to purchase an Electrolux dual fuel floor model but could not pass up the hood promotion Bertazzoni is currently offering. I am only hoping when the range is installed, the oven temp will be adequately calibrated. I previously owned a Viking, but really did not want to spend the extra money for what I thought would be of marginal benefit. I also do not miss cleaning the Viking grates which were an exercise in weightlifting too! I visited friends of mine a few years ago in Europe and I believe they have a Berta (the knobs are pretty distinctive). I do about 70% rangetop and 30% oven cooking. My old Viking had gas convection and an infrared broiler and I really liked the oven and understand that the Berta is similar, though I believe the heat control is different (regulated by flame instead of on and off).

Model PGB995SETSS Is there anyone out there that can give me input on this puppy for everyday cooking for my son and sometimes my husband? I have searched and there is not too much info.on appliances forum for these double free standings w/small oven on tops. Some peeps in the kitchen forums liked them, as like me, they don't like to bend over all the time and like a small oven to use everyday. The subject of cooktops vs. free standing ranges came up. I'm remodeling a 12'6" x 15'9" kitchen with three doors and a 49" (38 1/2" of it actual glass, from 1939)and of course a sink w/ window over it. Wall oven and cooktop seem like they'd limit counterspace/storage. Will add island but if anything went there, I'd want it to be prep sink. Some peeps suggested induction cooktops, but I think I like to see the fire and am leery of buying new pans etc. Help?

I can answer the BS oven door question. My 36" BS RCS was installed two days ago (haven't used it yet, hopefully this weekend). During the burn off of the oven (high temp is 450 F for an hour) I checked how hot the oven door got, as that has been a big issue noted on these boards. On my range, the SS part of the oven door did not get hot, just a bit warm. The glass on the oven door got hotter but not that hot. What did get quite hot were the sides/edges of the oven door. I could touch the side but not for long. Definitely quite hot. Not instant burn/scald though. There are vents (or look like vents) right there so it makes sense that those areas heat up a lot. Your kids would have to press their hands up against the 2" side of the door for several seconds for it to affect them negatively. More likely a kid running around will touch the front of the door and that is not a problem, on my range at least.

If your designer says you can fit a 48” range, then you can fit a 36” rangetop and 30” double wall ovens. Note I said *rangetop*, not range and not cooktop. You‘d get everything you need. A 36” wide rangetop will give you 6 burners, yet not need the enormous exhaust and upper wall space of a 48” range. (You’ll still need a good exhaust though, don’t overlook that whatever you do). You’d get your 2 ovens. And they won’t be cavernous 36” ovens that take a while to heat up. And you put your pots and pans in the deep drawers directly under the rangetop (see pic) for great convenience and efficient use of space. And you won’t have to bend down for that low range oven either. Win, win, win, win. Here comes that Thanksgiving turkey or that roast, imagine basting while standing straight. Here are some photos of rangetops in case you aren’t familiar. (P.S. your rangetop and separate double 30” wall ovens do not have to be the same brand.)

I'm looking at similar ranges for our future kitchen remodel. I did have an electric Maytag Gemini in my previous home that I really liked, including one rack in the main (lower) oven that had the glide feature. Very helpful since the oven was sooo low.

I'm pretty sure that the lower oven will be whatever the upper oven is (thus, gas, in your case).

I looked at the Maytag Gemini, but I decided against it because of the stove top. I don't like that the burners are squezeed into a 24-inch width to make room for the controls beside them. Although I would prefer the small oven on top (as in the Maytag), I decided that I'd rather live with the small oven on the bottom in order to get the full 30-inch width of stove top.

I'm considering GE Profile, but smoothtop electric. I also wonder about the use of the lower small oven. I don't like the models with the large convection oven on the bottom.

Like you, I also wonder how much I will really use it to justify the extra money.

I can get this past year's floor model, but they are not offering a good enough price, at least not yet!

I think I'd use the lower oven a lot, but I am concerned about the quality of the lower oven.

Another issue I am concerned about is the noise of the cooling fan. There is no way to hear the noise before purchasing and installing the unit. Does anyone know how I can get information on the fan noise?

Just curious, what caused you to be concerned about the quality of the lower oven?

FWIW, on our Maytag Gemini, the smaller oven worked great--heated very quickly since it was so small, was great for heating bread, pizzas, etc. We used it often.

Oops, posted too soon-according to one reviewer at Best Buy's website, the lower oven on that Electrolux is electric.

jbrig: I had read on one of the review sites that the lower oven took a long time to heat up and was basically a glorified warming drawer. I wanted to see if anyone else had that experience.

I'm very confused now because I too had read somewhere that the lower oven was electric (not on the manufacturer's website), but when I called Electrolux today, the customer service person told me it was gas.

susanuws, I saw that same (or a similar) review at the Best Buy website. That does cause confusion, doesn't it. Like you, I try to thoroughly research products and their options in order to make the best choice. Best wishes, and please let us know your experience w/ whatever you decide to go with.
