What are the most reliable counter-depth fridges these days?
Comments (18)I have a Jenn-Air french door, counter depth. It's about 4-5 years old. I can't remember the height (68 or so inches I'm guessing) but it's almost the largest they made at the time other than the sub-zero size. I wish I had held out for another brand, but I wanted the model with the ice and filtered water dispenser in the door as I am a total water drinker, as in all.the.time, so it's an important feature for me. At the time, KA and JA were about the only brands with this feature. Now there are several. My old refrig died and this one was in stock; I would have had to wait almost 2 weeks for the KA. I should have stuck it out. This thing has cold spots leading to ice chunks in the milk. Several times a year I have soggy, frozen lettuce in the crisper. Those may have been due to an inadvertent movement of the crisper setting but I don't think so. I think the dang refrigerator just ices up and thaws at random. Sometimes we have to take the ice maker out and shake it to get the ice to dispense. It's a wimpy size ice maker too, so I'm glad I don't rely on it for large amounts of ice....See MoreFreezer-less Kitchen. Silly Idea?
Comments (26)The taping of the door sounds like a clever idea. Although I know that the freezer door is hardly used. I currently have a water cooler (Will be gone in the new kitchen though) so never get ice readily. Only use it when we have company, occasional warm bottle of seltzer, making hard boiled eggs or using the ice to try and bring the temp down of soup or chili to put it in the fridge or freezer. Other than that the freezer is used for the occasional ice pop or ice cream. Although putting the freezer out of the kitchen would make that a less tempting option for the kids or ourselves ;). Also, when I make soup, chili or Bolognese sauce I make extra and store in the freezer for reheating. A frozen turkey. Maybe some extra bagels etc. But mostly the freezer becomes a final resting place for extra food before a big cleanup and to the trash. We always forget what is in there or we don't take items out the day before to defrost in the fridge so we leave them there and go get fresh to use. I have a split level home and the 5 steps down to the garage level are right outside the kitchen hallway entrance. On the kitchen side of this doorway is my rangetop and fridge. When you walk down 5 steps its about another 12 feet to where it is in the garage. So its real close. My plan is to possibly turn this area in the garage into a mud room. So then this will be inside the house and one less door to open to get there. So I think this is doable. Other thought was freezer drawers in the kitchen but I do not have enough free space to give up the drawers space for that application. The hard thing is that I am so unmotivated to cook in my current kitchen since the workspace is small and its cluttered. So in a truly functional kitchen I could feel differently about the freezer. Although, I would be cooking more and thus fresh ingredients would be used readily. I'll do the tape thing though to make sure nobody cheats :)....See MoreAre there any reliable self-clean ovens?
Comments (32)Wolf Steam over Wolf M sounds like a dream combo to me...If they ever get the M on the market! I agree with Gary (HI, GARY!!!) that, even though they seem not to have many problems, I think it's a shame Elux no longer has replaceable bottoms, as I think probably all ovens could benefit from replaceable bottoms. In addition to cleaning and replacing the bottom, it provides access to the hidden element. Dacor has a glass cover in the bottom, which I thought was a good answer, or at least they did several years ago. As far as porcelain issues, I also had problems with the porcelain in 2 Fisher and Paykel ovens (one blue, and one newer model with black interior), so would suspect DCS might have the same issues. I haven't heard of others with this problem, but there aren't many owners here on the forum, and I think F&P has been barely getting by for awhile, so I'm not sure they're selling much. They didn't replace my 2nd oven, which had electronic as well as porcelain issues, because they even stopped production for a time. They also had trouble finding me willing service people. F&P sent the wrong oven to replace the 1st one, which we noticed after they'd taken oven #1 out. So the guys had to reinstall the old oven, repack the wrong oven, and return another day to start the whole process over again when the correct oven arrived. F&P wanted to pay them only for one trip and one replacement, and it was a long struggle for them to get paid at all, or to arrange to send back the wrong oven. Surprise, surprise, that service outfit didn't want to come get the 2nd oven when it went bad. I don't relate any of the porcelain issues I had to self-clean. The self-clean in all 7 of my ovens has worked great. The Gagg has the best self clean in terms of getting the glass clear again, too. But the electronics in the F&Ps, the hated Monogram, and the Wolfs all held up fine to self-clean. In at least one of the Wolfs, the porcelain showed problems in a cavity in which I'd never run the self-clean. Since I knew what to look for, I found it earlier in the 2nd and 3rd ovens than in the first. In that one, I think wiping it out after self-clean was the reason I found it, but not necessarily the reason it happened....See MoreFreezerless refrigerator
Comments (6)This isn't full size but it's pretty neat and maybe they have a full size I just haven't had a chance to really look around. I found this by accident while looking for something else. http://www.subzero-wolf.com/sub-zero/counter-refrigerator/24-inch-undercounter-refrigerator-freezer-ice-maker-panel-ready...See Morephilwojo
