Big Problem...please help

Am not sure what info to add here but will explain the problem.I heard my puters modem running 'higher' than normal and thought it a little odd since it was not in use...so when I checked I saw this on the monitor (will put word for word)

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps;

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new instalation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

I shut the computer down and let it alone for about 5 min. then turned it back on but got the same thing. I tried the f8 with no luck...got the same screen again. Please, can someone tell me what might the problem be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.I have not installed any new hardware or software except for a 'TuneUp Utilities2009' about the first of the month. I downloaded that from their site. My computer was working ok maybe a little slow grant you but it still had plenty of memory & other than running slow have never had a problem like this happen. I always kept the cleanup and defrag up so have no clue to my problem.Thanks for any help you can provide.

Might check to make sure you dont have a CD or DVD by accident left in the CD drive.

I would guess that they are dead, but you might want to hold on to them a little longer. I'm worried that you saw leaves that died back which is usually a sure sign for me that the plant isn't going to make it. How long ago did you pot them up? I'm going to guess that it was a water issue rather than heat that did them in, but the heat certainly doesn't help matters. It is difficult to keep bareroots correctly watered because it is easy for them to get too wet when the plant is still dormant and doesn't need much water. But the top of the plant will dry out easily once it starts to leaf out which is why the heat can really hurt them. I'd give them another week or two but if they don't show growth soon then I'd toss them.

Pat, Is it the new leaves? Are they quickly turning mottled and fading shortly after they come out? If so, I'd check the back of the leaves for spider mites. Sometimes red spider mites leave mottling and stippling on foliage, and the spider mites are quite abundant this year. I'd also look for whiteflies, but spider mites would be my first guess. With hibiscus moschuetos, the kind of dieback you are seeing can be common in hot weather. I don't necessarily think it is a disease. Remember that they adore constantly moist but well-drained soil, and abhor drought and poorly-draining clay. The worst combination for them is heat/drought and dry clay. I do grow them in clay with no problem, but it is wet clay on the pond bank (well, normally it is wet there) and in our swamp where I planted them on the uphill side of the swamp so they'd be moist but not swimming in standing water. Down in my veggie garden where I have Disco Belle and Southern Belle in well-improved sandy/silty/humusy clay on the semi-shaded northwestern edge along the veggie garden fence, they usually do quite well but are struggling this year because there are no living veggies in that section and it isn't getting watered. I try to remember to water them once a week, and that is keeping them alive, but not necessarily happy. I did have a lot of trouble the first couple of years here with them being killed by cotton root rot, which is a horrible issue, particular in any soil where cotton once was grown, but after working exceptionally hard to amend the soil in the area where plants kept dying from CRR, I have grown them successfully ever since. With CRR, though, the entire plant dies, and you will see the disease progress right up a row of plants killing them one after another after another. Your plants might be getting too dry. Mine had a little dieback on a couple of limbs just like yours during the two weeks we had a very high number of fires and I was away and didn't water them. I have watered them twice since I noticed the dieback and there's been no further dieback and the plants are putting out new foliage, so hopefully I started watering them in time to save them. Dawn

I had a mystery stain on my soapstone counter (beautiful Belvedere, also from M. Tex) that only became apparent after I had my ucl's installed, a few months after the countertop was put in. It was a circle, as if a bottle or can was placed there and left a dark ring. So maybe it was there when I got the counter, maybe I put it there, who knows. I tried cleaning it with a scrubby and mild cleaner but it wouldn't go away. So I decided to call it patina and live with it, and went about my standard counter care routine, which was just cleaning with a damp sponge as needed and oiling the counter every few weeks. Now the stain is gone. Gone gone, even after the oil wore off. Don't know when or how. I would suggest that you go ahead and oil or wax your counter and see if, in time, the dark spots disappear. The wax just sits on top of the stone, it doesn't penetrate, and it can be removed easily with a mild cleaner, so I don't think you need to be concerned that you're somehow making the stain worse or more difficult to remove. I also had a non-mystery stain, totally self-inflicted. I got a microscopically thin ribbon of silicone sealer on the soapstone at the edge of a cabinet that sits on the counter. I went at it gently with a razor blade and a little ball of steel wool, looks fine now and no change in the texture of the finish. Good luck and I hope you let us know what happens!

that program does contain a registry cleaner if you did run it and allow the registry cleaner to remove entries it could have contributed to your problem. If that is the only new program you have added you might want to contact the manufacturer and find out if this is a common occurrence after using their product. When using any type of registry cleaner you run a risk of losing essential items. I personally never use registry cleaners.

Try the microsoft option zep gave you by inserting the windows cd and following the directions on that page to do the recovery console, note that it also has the more information area with a second command to try.
If it was your registry that got messed up using the recovery console might fix it.

You did not tell us if this is xp or vista, assuming it is xp follow these directions first to try to get to safe mode and select last known good config, if that works then good if not do the above microsoft method.

Thanks so much to you all for your info...I have a dell demension 4600c Pen 4 . Have tried what Zep & Mikie avised, and still can't get it to work. Is still showing the same thing. I can't find my windows XP cd to try the reinstall, but my son-in-law may have one.This all just blows my mind because it was working just find ...my nephew was able to check some things in it last night and found that the battery was dead but don't seem like that would be why windows will not boot. Will check back in here tonight.Thank you all so much

I would try unplugging all peripherals (printers, scanners, cameras,ethernet cables, ect) and select "Last Know Good Configuration" in the advanced startup options screen to see if you can boot up that way. It might get you running until you find the CD.

If the cmos battery is dead it may have lost the hard drive configurations.

New battery plus set it to auto discover hdd might fix it.

a dead cmos batter can definitely cause some strange things to happen, if that is the battery you are talking about. They are cheap just run by radio shack or some place that would have them and get a new one, don't take the old one out till you have the new one ready to go in.

I think it was Owbist that posted a link recently to how to change the battery which showed good pictures, you could search for that or maybe he has that link handy.
