Is this light fixture too small for our entry way?

I posted this in the lighting forum over the weekend but have had no responses and need to make a decision. I would love your opinions ASAP since I want to get our lighting order in today or tomorrow at the latest! :)

We're building a new (style: fairly modern Asian-meets-Craftsman fusion) home in Seattle and are choosing Hubbardton Forge fixtures for the exterior and most of the main floor of our house, in addition to several recessed cans on all floors.

We have a space in our entryway for a single entry light fixture, and no additional cans are located in this entry way area. We like this HF fixture below, but I'm afraid it's too small for the scale of the entry. The entry is approx. 7'w x 9'l and the ceilings are 10' high. This light is only 11" tall, 11" wide and only has one bulb. What do you think? Do we need 2+ bulbs in this area for adequate lighting? Is this too narrow for this space?

The entry way opens up to the side of a funky, geometric black metal staircase (made by a local metal artist) which you walk around to the right or left to get our our great room, so you will get some ambient light from through the staircase.

Dimensions:11.4" h. x 11.3" d.

Glass Dimensions: #137: 8.30" wide x 9" tall tube.

Socket Type: Medium.

Bulb:Type A, 100-watt max. or up to (1) 100 watt equivalent screw in compact fluorescent bulbs.

With the height of your ceiling and the size of the foyer, I do think it will be on the small side. I'd go with either wider and flush mount with more bulbs or hanging down.

Those below are just for examples of size, not necessarily your style.

Hubbardton Forge has wonderful fixtures. We love ours. By the way, the best price I found was through Five Rivers.

We're just across the water from you. :-)

That is a very cool fixture, but I think you're right to be concerned about its small size in the scale of your room, especially because of the 10 ft ceilings. Our entry is 8'6" x 10' with 9 ft ceilings and next to our stairway. Our fixture is about 15" in diameter by 12" in ht. The size works with the scale of the room, but the one bulb is not as bright as I'd wish it to be. Your selection may offer more down-light, though. We have nice, bright recessed lighting in the hallway directly in front of this space, and, of course, stairway lighting, but I don't think those really improve the entry lighting situation very much.

Determining the right size and scale for lighting fixtures was one of the biggest challenges. I'm jealous of your Hubbardton Forge fixtures...They're, by far, my favorites, but wouldn't fit in our budget. Enjoy, and best wishes!

We have this exact light in our foyer. Out of the box it seems huge. Our foyer dimensions are 11 feet 3 inches in length by 6 feet 8 inches wide, however, the foyer is open on 2 sides to other rooms. The foyer ceiling is vaulted with the peak at 17 feet. We love this large light as it is a good size for the space and can be seen outside the large transom over the 8 foot entry door. However, for your ceiling height you might consider the next smaller size. Good luck in your selection. bgj

I am no lighting expert, but my thought is that this will be too small for 10' ceilings. I am building a new home with 10' ceilings too and I know this will be a consideration for me when I choose my lighting. I think there is probably some ratio or rule of thumb on size--maybe do a Google search?

Well! If you have another room for the TV than that is your answer. Then, you can move the sofa to that wall and add two small club chairs across from it. If you go the chair route, get ones that swivel as you have the window seat in one direction and the dining table in the other. Easy to swivel and converse! I am not a fan of the TV being in the living room if there is another place that it can go. I wouldn't rush to take down the half wall. You will need someone competent to match your existing hardwood. Your kitchen looks like a nice size. Is there a table in there? Or can bar stool be put on that side if you replace the counter? It looks like it is a different material than your counters anyway so you can find a material similar to what is now there. ETA: When you do look to buy furniture, look that furniture scaled for small spaces/apartments. It's sometimes hard to judge in the store so take a tape measure with you.
