I have been using a desktop XP and had a computer person in to change all my information onto my Windows 7 lap top. In doing this he somehow lost all my family tree information. He said that he downloaded it all but I cant find it. I just recently had a Geek in and he could not figure out what the other guy did. I cant get in touch with the first guy as he has moved out of province. I have the CD's to install it but cant get anyplace with those either. Has any one got any suggestions as I am running out of patience.

You have the CDs to install...WHAT? What is it and how old is it??? You tried to install it and it didn't work? Was there an error message? You still have the XP desktop yes/no? How long have you been using it?

Assuming that your programme is "Family Tree Maker", try to locate your records by entering *.ftm in the Windows search box.

The Windows search box is opened by left clicking on the Windows globe in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Some of the files MAY be displayed but then CLICK "SEARCH AGAIN in Computer" and it will find all the relevant records.

If nothing is found then try repeating the search with *.ftmb and *.ged

In Family Tree Maker you can choose where to store your records so, if the actual programme has been installed on your laptop, then your records may be in an unexpected location (you can change it later).

FTM 2008 (see link), FTM 2010 and FTM 2011 have all run on my XP 32bit and Windows7 64bit systems. Google if yours is a different version.

If you subscribe to Ancestry.com then you will be able to export your records from the site back onto your laptop BUT FIRST CHANGE their Tree Name so that your records do not get muddled up with any files already on your laptop.

The late bloom time was one of the reasons I suggested a Styphnolobium. Here are pictures I took last year of a Styphnolobium japonicum blooming at the very end of August here in Western NY State. Don, I think there may be a whole bunch but too small to tell yet . They are very close to a Tokudama Flavocirialis . The young seedlings from last season have grown large enough to move them to a larger temporary home to grow larger, then I am not sure where they will find homes at. I added another section(again) but if you can imagine, I have nothing to fill it with (YET) This is still in part shade but gets some afternoon sun . No more room in the back yard so moving closer to the road and front yard a bit. Still have to collect some border rocks to hold in the soil

Maybe they were just following direct linage. I've run smack into another brick wall today. Time to find something else to entertain myself with for a couple of weeks. When I go back I'll see something that was already there that I didn't see this time. It looks a lot like there was a murder in 1878 followed by one in 1880 and then a 3rd marriage in 1884. I expected that guy to be pushing up daisies but instead he fathered a bunch of kids with her. The niece of husband #1 contested the will. Interesting stuff! Husband #1 was my 2nd great uncle so not my direct ancestor.

You might use bee4mee's search suggestions on the XP machine and get that data backed up onto a flash/thumb drive or external drive. Even a CD or DVD if you have neither of the other two devices.

Creating a family tree is time consuming and should be backed up regularly to at least 2 other places in my opinion. Learned that the hard way sadly but such is life.

Do you still have your old hard drive? If so, all is not lost. Your data file should still be there and it can be copied to a removable medium and transported to your new computer. The file should fit on a USB drive.

Another option if you have a LAN (WiFi) (Wireless) system in your house. Fire up the old computer and locate the data files. Set the folder these are stored in to "shared". Once this folder is set to 'shared', it can be seen by every computer on your local network. Over the network, you can copy the Family Tree Maker data file from the old computer to the new one. Just be sure you put it in the right location. Make sure that you use the 'copy' function and not the 'move' function.

After you have made the copy, return to the original folder that was set to "shared" and undo this.
