Apps for 'talking' map/directions?

Hi
I would like an app for either my Samsung Galaxy Exhibit or Ipad that 'talks' as you follow directions.
I am uncomfortable driving and having to look at the map.
Seems my phone used to talk, but if I have used my 2GB, I slow down to 2G speed, which is not fast enough I think to 'talk'.
Free would be very nice...

To each his own view, but I think smartphones make poor GPS devices for regular use. They're great in a pinch when you wanted to bring your GPS device but forgot it or when you thought you didn't need it but you get lost. On droid phones, Google maps seems to be viewed as the best performing tool and it's free.

Amazon has several models of both Garmin and TomTom GPS devices for under $100. I think using a purpose-built device is the best approach.

I couldn't agree more. I am new to a smart phone and my phone came with 3 GPS type things loaded on it that I have no clue about but the phone company won't let you remove them. I was just on a 6hr trip and I can't imagine if I used my phone how much data it would suck up as I don't have unlimited data on my phone. I much prefer a hand held garmen I mount on the winshield.

I had a basic one for the longest time that got me from point A to B and last summer I had to drive my son from NY to Maryland by myself so went and bought a better one for $200 and boy I can't live without it now. I especially love the lane assist and how I can search where the nearest gas station or fast food place is.

I just got a new car and I made sure to get the GPS built in and I absolutely love it and have already used it on a few long trips and it also has the lane assist and search functions. When our van dies the next car my husband gets I am going to insit he get it built in also. Mary

This is slightly different from what you are looking at, but is some ways appropriate. Using Google Earth you should be able to locate the position of the tree you planted with or with out GPS. Find the general area where the tree was planted and zoom into the area and find the nearly exact the location where you planted the tree. You can increase the accuracy of the position by measuring from two hard object that can be seen in Google Earth to the tree, then transfer those measurements to the Google Earth using the measuring function in Google earth. You can measure things in Google earth to the nearest foot.. Once you locate the trees you planted in Google Earth place a Placemark at the site of each tree. In the Placemark description you can place all of the statistics about the tree. While I have never seen, you can back up all of this information, and transfer it to other computers with Google Earth. These two files contain that information myplaces.backup.kml and myplaces.kml Copy them to the folder you want to use as a back up or copy them in the same Google directory on the other computer. If you install Google Earth you will be over writing the ones created on installation. In Window 8.1 they are located in C:\Users\account \AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth Account is the name of the user account. If you have an earlier version of Windows they are in the Application data. Or you can search for them use the above file name. I transferred the information to my Windows 8.1 computer from and Windows XP computer using this technique. I have used this exact procedure to locate ancestors graves to archive the location. I'm hoping an Apple user will answer. Do you know what operating system you have? I think Google maps works with iOS 6. Some voice navigation apps don't work with models 4 or before (at least that's what I think I read). - - - android phone user

Hi Heather Let see, one of my favourites is SkyView - shows location of planets and stars even in your house - I have the paid one but you can get it free also. AppZilla2 - has a lot of apps on it like a flashlight, level, hearing test, mirror etc. CBC Radio, Global Video (I can watch tv shows), some radio stations. Kobo and ibooks, Facebook, Scrabble, Bejeweled, Angry Birds(Seasons) Pinterest, Voice Actions (love this one - like Siri on the iphone) LOL I stubbed my toe once and the voice asked me if I was okay LOL. I also have Canadian Tire for the ads, TED. What I love best are the podcasts - I listen to history podcasts from BBC every night when I go to bed. Things You Didn't Learn in History Class is another podcast I really like. LOL I have become reaquainted with the Magna Carta, William the Conqueror, medieval England. I wish they had these when I was taking history in school. I also play Words with Friends and my niece suggested I get the Hanging with Friends. I love my ipod for the camera and video and checking my email is much easier than using my computer. I also use Skype. Anne

I am sorry to say that the eury is being returned. It is a definite fail for us. Pros: VERY quiet, low profile so it fits better under furniture, returns accurately to the base when finished, it doesn’t make annoying sounds like the Neato did, it’s fast, the battery seems very good. Cons: it doesn’t even have enough power to get over a very low threshold from my kitchen to living room (we give it a little boost with our foot and the it goes in a few feet and turns around and goes back into the kitchen. Grrr), it doesn’t have enough power to do the rug well, it’ll zoom right on by a dust bunny and never come back to get it, it has a very small dust bin but it doesn’t need to be emptied as often as it would if it was doing a good job. So, unfortunately, it’s back to the drawing board.

I have Yelp on my phone. If I search for a place (restaurant, shopping), then I click on 'Directions' it will start the GPS with voice. I use it all the time and its free. Just download YELP.

I think it would be fine for short trips but longer ones would use a ton of data. I have unlumited internet on my phone but still prefer garmin as I like to see the map and the lane assist when it comes up. I see they are making a 7 inch garmin now. My friend is thinking of ordering it. Mary

I have used both system types with near-like success. However, if I was traveling, out in rural areas, or if exactness and time savings are crucial I would use the TomTom/Garmin system.

Thanks for the input. I am also limoted to 2.5 of data on my phone. I used that in about 10 days.

Yeah I normally get 500mb before they slow me down but this month I was going to be traveling a bit so upped it to unlimited just for this month but normally I don't even use all the 500mb. It might be cost effective to invest in a window mounted unit if you are going to need it a lot.

My husband bought me a new car for our 24th anniversary a few months ago and now I am spoiled having it built in with a nice big screen. That and the heated seats for winter. I don't know how I went all these years without those luxury's, he he. Mary
