Replacing 30' JennAir Center downdraft with telescoping
Comments (10)Two thoughts: Since no one else confirmed joboxes, I just wanted to confirm that the two inch notch is required to be cut in the counter. I was surprised that the original installation (the hole for the cooktop and popup) was cut on site rather than at the granite place. It is cut with a high speed grinder saw. It appears to be a risky opperation but the installers didn't seem to worry about it. Second: admittedly I don't do a lot of high heat searing or other roaring flame cooking; but I don't use the vent very much. It does work to catch too hot oil smoke and some bacon type spatter, but I think it misses some on the front burners anyway. I am very surprised that I don't notice that the ceiling (or pendant lights) is covered with gunk after 5 years. My point is that if you perform expressive high heat cooking, that a real, ugly overhead hood would be wiser; AND if you don't, perhaps a vent is unnecessary....See MoreJenn air downdraft vs induction
Comments (7)If you read through the messages in the forum you'll find a lot of discussion of various induction cooktops. Most of us who have them absolutely love them, and those who don't usually want to have flames of gas. Induction is highly responsive, efficient, easy to clean, and fun to use. There aren't huge differences in quality between the various makers. The differences are in power, element size and layout, and how the controls work. The makers all have their own controls. Besides the physical controls, there are differences in included features, like "true timers", which, when included, let you set a time for the element to stay on and turns off at the end. The downside is that you need cookware which has an iron content (inc. steel) and is flat on the bottom, and your cookware will handle differently, so there's a little learning curve. You can see if your pans will work by trying to stick a magnet to the bottom. If it doesn't stick but the pan is stainless it might still work, but if it does stick it'll almost certainly work. My own preference is for venting up. It just works better because of the physics involved. And I love my induction. :)...See Morenew jenn-air JX3 - 475cfm downdraft ?

Comments (2)Thanks scole250, it's a log house so going through the walls is not an option. There are ceiling fans and lots of windows (there is a sun room a couple of feet away as well where the walls are nothing but opening windows) so the air can really move when the downdraft isn't up to the job (it's not great but it does part of the job). Actually while writing this response it occurs to me the house smells wonderful (curry) and the RH at the stove is 25% (cold outside and there's a fire in the wood stove) so maybe we don't need a solution. No solution is an option I never considered...until now....See Morewallycat
