Ok to strart off I have a sony vaio vgn-fs980...on a random day my touchpad stopped working and I connected a usb mouse, after a while I got annoyed carrying the mouse with me, I went on a website for help and I followed some instructions on getting the driver downloaded, therefore I did , as soon as my laptop restarted my touchpad was working, however when I tried to go on the net and say thanks for the help I noticed my keyboard wasn't working ,...it only gets the keyboard when its in the start up...I need help...my laptop has been like this for about a year, I really don't have money to get it fixed and I'm a fulltime student I really need my laptop running right...any help? I don't know if this helps but as I went into thr device manager under batteries I noticed that under microsoft AC adapter there was a yellow exclamation mark..and the same for microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery...what should I do.

I'm not familiar with sony but my Toshiba laptop has a Fn+?? keyfunction to switch from the laptop keyboard to an auxillary keyboard. Perhaps you're set on remote keyboard now,,, maybe read your manual to discover that?

If you should finally get ready to reload the system new,, which sounds like the easy thing to do, which should also fix your acpi problems,, then you might want to first try deleting the keyboard from device manager while connected to the internet and then refresh device manager so it looks for new devices.
Maybe then it will install the keyboard correctly, of course might need your Fn function for the keyboard is in the right mode before doing that refresh.

Hi, well first of all thanks for your attention. I took a look at my owners manual and there were FN + ?? options , but none for my problem . When this problem occured it also disabled my WLAN , and internet connections...therefore the computer will not detect the wireless internet which is making it harder for me to refresh the device... my sony laptop did not come with cd's that would help me reload my system. I also tried connecting my laptop to another computers internet, or using their wirelesss connection but didnt have any luck !

On my toshiba that would be Fn+F11 Turns on sort of a keypad on the middle keys. And lights up an additional indicator light too.

When the Num Lock light is on it means that the keypad on the right-hand side of the keyboard will function like a 10-key adding machine. When the Num Lock light is off, the keys function sort of like a mouse -- the keys are directional in nature. Look at the key labeled with the number 4. You will see that it has an arrow pointing to the left. When the Num Lock is off and you press that key, the cursor on your screen will move one space to the left. If you press the 1 key, the cursor will jump to the end of the line you are on. And so on. The Num Lock light doesn't affect anything other than the functionality of the keypad on the right side of the keyboard. So, if the main part of your keyboard wasn't working, it wasn't because the Num Lock light was on (or off).

To get a keyboard with long lasting lettering, choose one whose keys have the nomenclature molded in as a depressions on the key tops. After molding, these depressions are "ink filled" and are resistant to wipe-off. If some of the ink gets lifted, these can be refilled, Sadly, most keyboards available today have smooth top keys with the lettering printed on, most likely with an ink jet printer. This is a cost reduction because most of the keys are physically the same with different printed characters. The ink eventually gets worn off on the most used keys. On my keyboard, its the "a, s, and e" keys.
