Electrolux wall ovens - Speed/Icon questions

Hello,

I've done a bit of research on wall ovens and have narrowed down our choices but would love some additional insight from the folks here who have experience with Electrolux ovens. I've decided to avoid the double wall oven configuration and go with an ICON single wall oven + (single wall oven OR high-speed oven). Some questions...

To help me figure out whether to get a speed oven or regular to pair with the other regular ICON...

1) From what I've read on these forums, my understanding of speed ovens is that they have 4 capabilities:

a) regular oven

b) convection oven

c) speed oven (convection+microwave)

d) microwave

I hardly use a microwave (1-2x/week) so that functionality isn't a driver for me. Since the speed cooking aspect relies on microwave power, I would probably try to limit my use of that as well, using it only when I'm under a time crunch. My question is, does the Electrolux speed oven have any benefits over a regular ICON regarding a) and b)? The only things I could think of are that because of the smaller size, maybe it uses less electricity and takes less time to preheat?

2) Do ICON wall ovens broil well? I assume they do but since Electrolux speed ovens can't broil so I just want to make sure I still have an appliance that does that have capability. If not, I think I'll have to consider a Miele speed oven.

I did go with the double oven, but we use a microwave often. Since you don't, I think single + speed is a great choice for you. Eliminates the need for a microwave taking up space anywhere else.

My Elux ovens broil just fine. I have the non-Icon, but my understanding was that this was mainly a style difference. Yours should broil the same as mine. It is "open door" broiling, where you keep the door slightly ajar. I've never had any other kind, but apparently some ovens don't. It also has "convection broiling" where you keep the door closed and the convection fan turns on, cooking a little faster. It's supposed to be good for thicker cuts of meat and fish.

Our Elux Icon broils just fine too, alto to be honest, living in S Calif we do most of our broiling outside on the BBQ which also has an Infra red broiler.

The broiling element in the Elux Oven is much bigger and hotter than the broiler in the Miele Speed oven and in fact if you do a search for Miele Speed oven here, you will see "Mixed reviews" as to its broiling abilities.

Go to the AJMadison website, and look up the specifications for the Elux oven and the Miele speed oven and you will see the difference in the heat/size spec's for the 2 broilers.

Also read the post here in GW about speed ovens, We use our Elux speed oven a lot, Baked taters in 14 minutes instead of 45 minutes to an hour, (Including preheating).
Some things like poultry and fish as well as french fries come out much better when they are "Speed cooked" to reheat as opposed to either microwaving them or heating them in an oven or convection oven.

Except for broiling and size, You can do anyting in your Elux Speed oven that you can in your regular oven.
I use it to grill toast, I have baked turkey thighs and breast in it, meatloaf, etc etc, It is our most used cooking appliance.

I just posted this information in another thread but I thought it might be helpful here. First of all, I would like to state that I never considered Wolf ovens, soley because of price. We actually had a pretty large kitchen budget (and made it even bigger as we went along), but I just didn't want to spend nearly 10% of my budget on an oven. I would say that I expect a Wolf oven to perform better, because it does cost more than twice as much. I saw the one post saying that it will last twice as long, well I'm not sure if that's true, but I don't think I want to use any oven for 40 years, assuming the Electrolux only lasts 20 years. What I posted in the other thread is about our non-Icon Double 30" Electrolux ovens. From everything I can see and read it appears as though they are the same, minus appearance and number of easy glide racks. Speaking of appearance, I think both Electrolux actually look nicer than the Wolf ovens, but that is a personal preference. I think the nicest looking oven is the Thermador with the large round clock and controls, but that costs as much as Wolf, and is made right along side, with many same components, as a Bosch oven. Our Electrolux was installed this August, they seemed fine, until we released the time was running fast on the clock. No big deal. Then we noticed things were taking much longer to cook in the top oven than the bottom, as well as taking much longer to get to temperature. After buying some after market thermometers, we saw the top oven was running 150 degrees below what it said it was running at, unless convection was picked. Bottom oven seemed to run closer to desired temp, but still off a bit. Called Electrolux and had a service company take a look at it. We were not happy about having these problems in an expensive (and new) oven, and requested a replacement. Electrolux said they would get back to us. 1 week later we found out the swap was approved. New oven was delivered, and the temps are running dead on perfect. Every product can have a one off lemon, it's how they deal with it. I am VERY pleased with the service we received, and I would happily recommend Electrolux to anyone who is interested. FYI, regarding the blue flaking, we did have it on both the original oven and the replacement. After the oven was first installed and ran, there were some flakes on the bottom of the oven. After wiping them out the first time, we have never seen them occur again. I attribute it to the first time the oven is moved and not a big deal as it never happened a second time Lastly, regarding Mac vs Dell, that comment was nonsense. Compare a $1500 Macbook Pro with a Dell Latitude E series. The Dell is actually better made, its just the OS (Win 7) that isn't as nice. People think of crummy Dell's because of the cheap $400 laptops they buy at Staples. Problem is the cheapest Mac you can buy is $1000, so you might as well compare Apples to Apples (pun intented).

I thought I'd post a follow-up as I went down and viewed the Elux stove in person. It's definitely been 'beat up' a bit and is not in as pristine condition as the seller claimed. Before I write it off entirely, I have a few questions to pose to the experts. It's a 2010 built model. It's true..it's never been used. It looks like it was a "floor model" as it has a few minor dents on the left panel. It has some not so minor scratches including one on the front which is vertical down the front of the temp control bar. I am not aware that you can 'fix' scratches in stainless steel? It's missing ALL the accessories...wok pan, simmer plate, etc. One of my key concerns, however, pertains to the two oven doors. On the inside of the door, on the blue liner on the upper corners where the screws go, apparently, someone had scraped something away with a razor blade or knife. The blue coating is missing in a 1-inch circumference around the screw and there is etching in the blue liner. Also, where the door closes and hits the oven in this spot, there are dent marks. What on earth could have been scraped off and have caused the dent marks??? It's so strange..... I'm concerned that the missing blue coating really impacts the oven door performance and it will begin peeling off. Am I being too picky or is this true? I don't like the look of course, but the funtionality is a primary concern. I made an initial offer of $3200, but, after I noticed this, asked for additional time to research. Replacement doors are $1500 for the two. The person selling this unit is a used appliance dealer who acquired this from his normal channels and doesn't seem to know much about Electrolux-- other than the retail price, of course.... ;) I just don't know if this 'great deal' is that great....I don't want a product that won't work. The dealer provides a 3-yr warranty on basic parts. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I've had the Same Elux Speed oven for over 4 years now. About 6 months ago, the handle did start coming loose. I downloaded the parts manual for it and I saw the 2 screws were under the front cover. I was gonna fix it but DW says "You have nuff to do--call somebody to fix it" So I did, it took the guy 15 minutes at the most to remove the front cover, He added lock washers to the screws and it has been fine since then. This is our most used appliance, we even used it to boil water, etc when our "Fancy cooktop" took a dump and went to the dump (not an Elux). I use it to make toast, bake potatoes, roast turkey legs, as well as the usual MW duties. We have been very happy with it, and as far as "we're" concerned, there is not a better one made. Yep the Miele will broil and the elux won't but we have never even used our full size Elux Oven for Broiling or its predassor either. We do our grilling & broiling outside, and as some folks have mentioned, You just can't beat one of those infrared broilers and we have that on our BBQ. We did see a complaint about popping corn in a speed oven, I'm not sure it was an Elux speed oven, the problem was resolved (wasn't the speed oven as I recall)--but I can't find that post for ya now. I don't ever recall seeing a problem with the Elux Speed Oven, other than your post so I would not be too hasty to "write it off". So, while I respect my "Dear Desert Friend's" advice, not sure I would "Throw in the towel" just cause He says so! Gary

This may be too late for you, but I have the Electrolux Pro Icon oven and speed oven. Love them both!

Have almost never used the speed feature in 4 months but it is used daily as a microwave (often several times a day) and I have used it lots as a regular and convection oven.

I am having a harder time wrapping my head around the speed oven but I am planning on using it tomorrow to cook sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving. The one thing it was fabulous for is cooking my baked beans which take over an hour to bake and for the bacon to get crisp, and it took 30 minutes or less in the speed oven.

I LOVE my Electrolux oven! It has lots of features I didn't realize it had which I have loved. For example, speed cook. I have a crock pot which I love to use but it is stored inconveniently and I plug it in on my island so as not to hurt the marble countertops. I worry someone will get burned or knock it over. The last two times I would have used my crock pot (for ribs and for chili), I used my oven instead. Worked beautifully. The ribs I did in foil pans and I could make more which was good because we were feeding more than would fit in my crock pot.

The other feature it has which I haven't used but would have liked to know about is the warming drawer. This is a great feature! I have a warming drawer, which is probably good since I just have the one true oven, but if you are doing a double oven (and probably if you are not since you can used your speed oven), it eliminates the warming drawer (which I love and use lots). Then you can have just a drawer for storage!

Electrolux's 30"w ovens (Icon or otherwise) may have the best broilers out there in an electric oven. 4000 watts, 8-pass element, open-door, variable heat/thermostatically adjustable.
