Upgrading old machine

I finally got U-verse installed, what a difference that made in the speeds of this antique.
I also installed an additional 1GB of memory, bringing the total to 2 GB. I was hoping for another speed increase...not so. After about 3 minutes of surfing, the blue screen would come on and in "Doss" print would say something about the memory would be dumped. I had to unplug it to get it to turn off.
X-P Home, SP3 will support 2 GB of memory won't it? If so, is there more to the installation than just installing the memory? The computer does recognize there is 2 GB of memory.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Gene, it was a full screen of text, it didn't stay up long enough for me to read it all.

If your machine can’t be saved, and soot may well have damaged the innards - consider purchasing a Brother. I now make my living as a seamstress, sewing several hours a day, seven days a week. I’ve owned a 70’s Kenmore, upgraded to a 70’s Bernina, then purchased a new Bernina two years ago. Also have an older Viking. When my newish Bernina lost it’s timing last month, I knew it was time for a replacement. Upon the recommendations of my trusted sewing machine repairman, I bought a Brother Simplicity. This machine may be more expensive than you need, they offer several less expensive models with similar features - yet they are all great machines. Threading the machines is easy, all the locations are numbered, so even a novice can’t goof it up. It also has an automatic needle threader and buttonhole program. I would just move up in the Brother line. They are such a great brand. I'm on a Husqvarna Viking currently, but when I upgrade, I'll be getting a Brother multi-needle and letting my Viking be a sewing machine.

I don't think I've had other than a 64 bit PC (along with 64 bit Windows) for some time but I do know that 32 bit programs seem to run fine on them. They're easy to see, they get installed in a separate folder (Program Files x86). Have you tried running your 32 bit program on a 64 bit Windows install? You might be surprised by the result and if it works okay, I'd scrap that antique and spend the money on a new machine. Or, is a new version of the program available? Putting money into an old machine isn't usually a good choice, there are many things inside approaching end of life and failure.

refinish, paint, replace? Real paneling (solid wood with tongue and groove joints) I'd probably find a way to save if you like it, the nasty veneered composite stuff that was the rage in the '70's I'd probably pull down. What's underneath? Since you're in the old house forum, perhaps plaster? In which case I'd find a plasterer and repair it. If the paneling is nailed to the studs I'd take it down and go back with blueboard and plaster.

The past couple of hours I have been doing research on my problem. If I failed to change the page file size after adding the extra memory, would this create the problem I described?
Is there a chance I have two sticks of memory that are not compatable?

The page file shouldn't have anything to do with, Windows should adjust that automatically.

Are you sure you bought the correct memory for your machine? What happens if you remove the memory? Does the blue screen go away?

Have you tried to boot into safe mode?

If it was a virtual memory blue screen (which is diff than above) this may apply

Genes, that was a interesting link, but that didn't show up.
Mike, I couldn't get into Safe mode when I had both sticks of memory installed. I removed the stick that was furtherest from the CPU and all is well now....1GB instead of 2GB.
Later today I will remove the stick that now is in the machine and compare them side by side and report back.

If Windows boots normally without the new memory, it points to the memory being the culprit. What make/model is your machine and what made/model is the memory?

I'm assuming the BIOS is reporting the stick as being installed?

Check at Crucial.com to find out what speed memory sticks are compatible with your machine and max memory for that model
