Deleting History?

Howdy. Something I liked about IE8 was that it would delete search history, etc on leaving the Net. Unfortunately, my system had IE8 problems and I went back to IE7.

I've got Internet Properties on my desktop to delete stuff like histories, tmp, and so on. Having to do that has become a pain. I've been thinking maybe IE7 can do the same as IE8 but I just don't know how to access it.

I'll appreciate whatever help you might offer. Thanks, Gene

Have you considered switching to Mozilla. There you have the option Clear private data.

I dont have an ie7 to look at but ....
If you look under the tools, internet options, and you choose the Advanced tab... you will see Empty temp internet files on broswer close.

Clears your cache.

My gut reaction is that IE is being a little buggy or there's a corrupt file somewhere. You might want to start with an error check of your disk (My Computer, right click on the drive in question, choose properties, then tools). It will require a reboot. You can also manually delete temp files by typing %temp% at either run or search (depending on your version of Windows). You may find thousands of files in there. If you try to delete them all at one time you'll likely get a message about a file being in use. That's normal, just work around those (delete the oldest files first). After that, navigate up the directory tree and you'll find the history folder.

Google web history.. while there, may not be what you mean. IE has autocomplete which saves things typed in form fields which may be what you are wanting to clear. Some of those things are logins and passwords. I know of no way to clear just the google items. But to clear all autocompletes, it that will work for you -0 in ie6 I think it goes something like this ... 1. Click on Tools in the IE menu 2. Select Internet Options 3. Select the Content Tab 4. Click the AutoComplete button 5. Click Clear Forms 6. Click OK 7. Click OK again ~ Alternatively; If you think google is saving the search terms,(which they do for everybody) google search box might forget them if you were to delete the google cookies.

With my IE6, if you delete your history etc, that empties the address bar drop down list. If you wish to put some oft used addresses back in the drop down list, you must type those addresses back in the address line. Just visiting the sites wont populate the list

Sorry, zep, I now am not certain if it is Google... I did donwload the History Eraser. It did NOT erase my ever growing history on the Map. When I go to settings/application/running services, it looks like it is a google...but the History Eraser didn't do the trick?? It is the 'map' app that came with the phone- a 'little square box with a blue ball in the middle'. What else can I try, without going to the TMobile store? Thank you.

And set your save history to one day.. or 0 if it allows.

Thanks. I appreciate the information. A few years back I tried Mozilla for a little while. It just didn't work for me.

I've never understood why we can't have a "0" save history, have you? Mine stops at "1".

You bring up another question/comment. I am on Charter cable high-speed. Except for when I power down everything I'm always connected to the Net. Right? Therefore, I am always retaining Net "history". This is regardless of the fact that about all of my computer activity is involved with programs that are proprietory to my computer and has nothing to do with the Net (that activity is also retained in histories). So, to delete my histories, etc I must access Internet Properties "general" from my desktop, or from Tools (see top of screen) "delete browsing history" from the Net.

It seems to accomplish what I wish I might try to give IE8 another try and see what happens to my system. I ran it in their Beta version for almost two years with no problems. Then when MS brought it out as a replacement it screwed up my computer. Go figure! Thanks again. Gene

browser history is just that, what you have accessed using your browser and nothing else, so when you clear browser history that is all you are clearing, to get it to clear history on close you do have to x out and close your Internet Explorer which has no connection to still being connected via your router connection, when you x out and close your browser that resets the browser and clears your history and what ever else you have it set to clean upon closing.
any other programs you may be concerned with having a history would be totally independent of the browser and would have to be handled through that program.

When you power down your pc and cut power then you are fully disconnected from the internet and no programs can have access.
so there is a difference in powering down the pc and turning off your browser in your case IE, you can clear IE history and cache from either the tools menu on the top of IE or in control panel under internet options.

Using a program like ATF will do a much better job of clearing all the history and cache and stuff you want cleared.
