Don't you now have Windows 7 Shaddy? If so simply right click on the zipped file and click to"Extract all...." and follow along.

I have a HP Photosmart printer that has the seperate color ink tanks. I really like it. Photo's do not fade. I have had some that have been on the fridge for a couple years and look great. Someone printed a picture on a Canon photo printer for me - and it looked very faded in just a couple months! I can buy my ink on eBay far cheaper than from the store. I only use genuine HP tanks - I never refill them either. My printer will continue to print in b/w if I run out of a color. I like the seperate tanks - as sometimes I use more reds or blues, depending on what I am printing. I can just replace those tanks as needed. I think Lexmark printers are junk! I would consider those disposable printers. You CAN buy one cheaper than replacing the inks, LoL :) I don't recommend all-in-ones, unless you are really short on space.

Wow, lots of responses to address. Thanks everybody, for taking the time to give me your input. I agree with the comment that perfectionism can just be another word for controlling. And really taking the time to analyze this whole challenge I'm up against has led me to recall several other examples of times where I've been hurt by this personality trait (flaw!!) Some of them are just so obvious to me, I truly can't believe he doesn't realize the damage he causes!!!! Ex: When we moved a few months ago, I had been boxing up everything we owned for two days straight. And in the days prior to that, making all the runs to U Haul to get boxes, bubble wrap etc. By Friday, I was exahusted. Only our toobrushes and a few pairs of clothes remained. We could barely walk through our house, because the boxes were stacked so high--that's how steadily I had stayed on task. My back, my legs were so sore from all the leaning down and lifting, my fingers had paper cuts and I felt worn down, unshowered, and just flat out exhausted. (And I'm NOT a housewife---all that was ON TOP of putting in a full week at work.) All I wanted to do was get out of the house and go see a movie to relax and unwind and reward myself. But my husband's sister was in town with her two little kids for the weekend, and my in-town in-laws had already made a reservation for all of us at a restaurant--in an hour! I told my husband I was NOT feeling up to a long night out with everyone, and actually that I was pretty awed by their insensitivy and expectations knowing we were in the process of MOVING. I offered to visit his sister the next day after I had gotten some rest. But no, he wanted to go through with the big dinner, said that "the moving would get done." I told him it was easy for him to say when all he had done while I was breaking my back was make little runs to Lowes or Home Depot, coming back with a roll of tape or a new hammer, etc. (By the way, I hadn't complained at all about him being gone because I knew if he was around, I wouldn't have been putting things in the boxes the right way or I would have been using too much bubble wrap or taping it the wrong way, etc.) Anyway...point being, one of his famous quotes during times like that is "Don't worry, calm down, It will get done." HOWWWWW does he think it will get done if we don't spend time on it? Are all the lamps and paintings and cookware and china supposed to find their way into the boxes themselves??? And WHHHYY is it so hard to tell his family "Look, we can't make dinner tonight, she's been packing for 2 days straight and is totally worn out. I'm gonna take her to the movies so she can relax. We'll see yall tomorrow instead." P.S. We had just seen his sister about a month earlier, so it's not like we hadn't seen her in a year or anything! Ok...back to the present. I think, as yall suggested, it's a good suggestion to talk with my husband about all this on a day when we're calm and "an episode" hasn't just happened. Because our most recent talk DID happen that way, and it's always hard to stick directly on topic when recently angered.... Then we just end up on other tangents, and make the situation worse. I bought a book over the weekend called "Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget." The author (Legato, probably mis-spelling it) sounds very qualified and a lot of her analysis includes scientific backup--about how literally the female brain, female hormones, etc. operate so differently than the male brain, etc. I thought this approach might reach my "smart" husband better than "just another self help book with a woman writing about male vs. female communication." And it IS quite interesting. Talks about how men and women handle stress differently,and gives reasons why. Like how oxytocin and cortisol are produced at faster rates when women get stressed or upset. Enabling us to feel the situation more deeply, and also remember it in greater detail ( No wonder I can still recall our fights over the past year as if they happened yesterday!) And as for why "men never remember" there is lots of info. on the basic "instincts" of how males operate. How they are "wired" so to speak, NOT to remember...going back to the days of men being the hunter gatherers and if they remembered every detail of the last battle, they wouldn't have the bravery to go out there and do it again! Anyway, after reading a few pages and some of the anecdotes of husbands and wives, I was relating and laughing...and read him a few. We both laughed a little and I think it kind of broke the ice. Hopefully it will lead to some more conversation. The other day I tried what one of you posted..about praising him for the positive/wonderful things first and then stating the issue that's bothering me next. That seemed to reach him a little bit.

I've inherited blood pressure and cholesterol problems and also had a severe reaction to Crestor, so I'm strictly on my own when it comes to managing the cholestrol. I've learned, through trial and error, that avoidance of empty, starchy carbs and sugar makes a huge difference in all of my numbers. I typically start my day with a "sludgie" made in a NutriBullet with lots of leafy greens, some fruit, yogurt, nuts, seeds, and a liquid of my choice. I do not avoid fatty foods at all; no fat-free or low-fat anything. Bacon is my friend. But there's no processed food in my pantry, no hidden sugars, no breads, or cereals. I guess I follow a modified Atkins program, with lots of vegetables added to the meat, eggs, and dairy foods. I don't count calories; I'd probably be horrified. Carbs are what I keep track of. I have to watch my weight.....in order to not lose any more. I'm never hungry, that's partly due to the fat in what I eat but also to the absence of sugars and any breads, pasta, cereal. Those foods always made me hungry for more, more, more. Once I more or less recovered from the Crestor issues, I was left with what has been diagnised as fibromyalgia. My body failed me rapidly. Fortunately, I am able to take advantage of nearby fitness center where I participate in water aerobic classes, yoga, pilates, muscle machines and training, and just plain swimming for fun. I initially used a trainer (PT) to work with me on my strength and muscles, and she was a huge help. The difference between how I felt and looked before I started going to the center and now is incredible. I was feeling weak, frail, unsteady on my feet, all of which made me feel helpless and very, very old. I'm just old....not very, very! ;-) Oh, my blood work is stellar....no more meds of any kind.

Electric my entire life. New build and went with gas. I wanted to run both gas and electric for the 'someday when induction prices come down' but dh would not have it. Gas it is! I agree with fishcow. My electric low would never be low enough and things left to just stay warm would always cook to the bottom of the pot, grrr. I was concerned with my kiddos just starting to cook and changing from electric to real live fire but they have done really well (10 and 13). I do have to remind them not to preheat the burner (after my own OOPS holy cow this thing is hot NOW) - be ready to cook when you turn that baby on. With electric it took forever so it was common to turn it on with the pan on the burner while preparing the food we were going to cook. And I did have to adjust to not seeing the idiot light that the burner was on. I did leave the burner on a couple of times when we first moved in. One other thing I didn't realize sort of is burner configuration. I did research and new each hob put out different btu's but until I used it I didn't really 'get it' as to how much different that really is. The high output boil this water burner is so much hotter that if I cook on it like browning meat it's just a little out of control it's so hot. That burner however is also my simmer burner (it has two fire rings) and it works awesome for that too. I initially tried to just stick with that one burner (as I pretty much did with my electric as the jack of all trades) but it just is that much different it's better suited for certain things. I use more burners now than I did before. We have adjusted relatively unscathed.

Doesn't seem to work owbist, spoze I got the eval as a "gift", now I must find something else, will try the 7zip, have heard it works alright.

I've not had to install anything in Windows XP or Windows 7 to extract zip files. Just like Owbist mentioned, it's included in the operating system.

Thanks Jean, you know, when you don't do this sort of thing on a daily basis, tend to forget what to do. Know the fellas are "into" the geeky stuff, but not all the ladies are knowing, or some not even caring what is going on behind the scenes. Sometimes, I think, had I known all the behind the screen maintenance that SHOULD go into operating and maintining a machine, would I have taken the plunge? Jury is still out on that.
While I enjoy the fellowship from having the machine, when I hear ladies tell their stories on how the tech,or whomever is helping ,whatever did or did not do for them, makes me cringe, I believe it is a sexist thing. Sorry my feelings after all these years, ladies still don't always know what and how machinery works, not all, but some and do we really care? Jury out on that one too! Easy to just use the machine til it won't perform anymore, and go out and purchase a new one. IN my case, I would have loved to kept going, but for some reason, even with all my maintainance, it just up and died. I felt I lost my friend.

Just so you know, I am an older lady too (55) and typically advise using what is already available with Windows rather than installing additional software. I feel that using what you already have is simpler and less labor intensive when you think about the actions of finding, downloading, installing and learning how to use alternate software.

Geekiness is not gender specific. I work with a fairly equal number of female techs and male techs. We are people just like you with an interest in what we do. I believe you are into quilts. That's kinda geeky to me :-) I'm just saying, maybe you don't always know who is on the other end of a post. Women are quite capable of critical thinking.

I really never look at a computer as a machine, it's a tool that we can use to achieve whatever we are attempting to accomplish. Sure, there is a physical 'box' of parts that make up the hardware, but without software, it's just an expensive paperweight. It's the software that you are interacting with.

Kind of reminds me of my xwife telling me how much she hates that leave dirty dishes in the sink,,, and then when I try to keep her happy by washing them next time she complains that I left the sink wet and its water spotted... I have to dry the sink after washing my dishes.

My solution was to visit publix and buy a couple packs of paper plates and some plastic silverware... then order a water softener installed & never use that sink or dirty a dish again when i'm home alone.

I love all things techie...
A new gadget comes out and I 'HAVE' to have it to see what it will do...I have some health issues and hopefully when this quiets down, I may try to tackle Win8, just for the heck of it....they say to keep the old gray matter working, you should get out of your rut and try something new......I'm a 'trial and error' person, haven't gotten into any serious trouble so far....I use to make web pages, owned a garden chat room at one time...met a lot of people from the states and Canada through that chat room...had garden parties in MI, TN, KY,...

Ladies, I hope I haven't stirred up a frenzy here, but reading the responses, leads me to believe there are some female techies out there, and like others here, I have great respect for that. I am just saying there are some of us that are just not capable to doing some of the techy things, no matter what, UNLESS they are carefully explained, and when I can get it in my head, repeat the process over and over until it imprints on my brain. I believe that is a lot of what adult ADHD is, and that is a lot of my problem. I was a laborer for all my working life, and until retirement did not even dream of doing "office work" Now, that I am freer to choose what I would like to do, enjoy the word processing etc., that comes with some projects. Then, there are others that use the machine for just FB and email, not for me to criticize, this is America, and so glad of it too. Anyway, I digress, there are some ladies out there in cyberspace, that are alone, and at the mercy of unscrupulous tech people, and they don't even know what to do about it, let alone learn the proper techniques. I try to steer them to a computer forum, and pray for the best. This has been my home for about 15 years, and I still miss Dreamweaver, she was a real techie, way before her time.
So, have a great day, anyone that is reading this, and I hope I haven't upset anyone. WE are sistas regardless of the circumstances.

Neither technical knowledge nor ignorance have a gender component. People who make an effort to gain an understanding about something know more than those who don't. No talk of advantages, disadvantages or excuses make sense to me.

My auto mechanic is a 50-something year old woman at a large shop and all the guys look to her for help. I guess she ignored anyone who might have suggested along the way that she wasn't suited to do such work.

I haven't need winzip since windows 98 or XP was it? I just click the zip file to open and move the contents. When I used winzip years ago it never expired. Mary

WinRAR, 7zip, other types of compressed and assembled library files will open with 7-zip where as the built in windows zip mostly wont know what to do unless its a zip.

Oh ok. I rarely get a winrar file but if I do I have used winrar. If they have win 7 though would be curious to know why just opening the zip does not work. Something corrupt maybe? Mary

I have an older Win XP machine which wouldn't unzip files. Tried all sorts of things including coming here for help a few years ago. I finally gave up and bought Win Zip which is still on the machine.

I just think some of these Windows machines were missing parts.

Hey, Mikie - wish my hubby would try that! I gave up a long time ago.

MIkie, I don't have any problem with the opposite sex messing up anything and never have had even with two husbands. But, I do have a sign on my kitchen counter that says:

I know how to cook, I just don't.

Just to be sure I don't have future problems. LOL
