Electrolux just came out with 2 non-hybrid--ie (completely Induction models). I just bought one and had it installed. We love it. Took a cup of water put it in a 5 inch pan and put on smallest burner (6 inch). It boiled in less than a minute. Took a paper towel and put it under pan, boiled the water again, paper didnt get hot.If you lift the pan off the cooktop the display will show an "F" and the temp setting you were using, If you put the pan back within 3 minutes, the burner comes right back to the same setting without touching any of the controls. The unit is completely quiet and even with the small burner set to power boost "P", there was no humming from the pan or the cooktop. The pot I used was a teflon coated steel circulon pan. The boiling bubbles in it were evenly distributed. Lat night we cooked spaghetti on it. The other pan we used was one that they give you when you buy the cooktop a really nice one, Chantal Enamel coated steel pan. It too worked very well with not strange noises. The cooktop does have a fan in it, but even with 2 burners going , it never came on, so cooking was completely silent---well almost cept for wife's "Oooh's and Ahhh"s LOL Anyway the cooktop is beautiful too, I have posted pictures of it in the Photo Gallery section of this site. The Electrolux Icon Induction units are fair traded sooooo You will pay the same price regardless of where you buy it. It does come with the Chantal Omlet pan and if you Register the cooktop with Electrolux they give you a 2nd pot A saute and serve pan with the lid. Anyway good luck in your selection,but I can sure recommend The electrolux unit with great enthusiasm. We also have their speed oven as well as their Convection oven (for about 3 years now) and both are beautiful and trouble free. Gary

Unless you have very special cooking needs and you can't get a pan that will work for those needs that will work on an induciton cooktop, I'd suggest all induction. I have all induction and bought a portable hotplate for using my canner on (only available in Aluminum). I can a lot, but it still was not worth giving up the induction hobs for that. As to cleaning, it is nothing like a regular ceramic cooktop. That is another good reason to go all induction, or you will have half a cooktop that is a pain to clean, and half that is the easiest thing imaginable. My cooktop is easier to clean than my old formica countertop (was textured). My husband even loves the induction cooktop - he says we will never go back to regular ceramic electric cooking - works for me, I love the induction too. If you have read something that says full induction cooktops are difficult to clean - I want to know what those folks are smoking! I am a slob of a cook and it is still very easy to clean. The only problem we have with ours is that if we don't lock the controls it will beep when the cats walk across it at night. You have to press and hold slightly - two different spots in rapid succession to actually turn the unit on, and then it won't do anything if there is not a pan on it anyway, so as long as we never leave a pan on the hob (and we never do) even if for some reason the cats were able to step just right to activate something, it would not come on. The cats aren't suppose to be up on the counter - so when I hear it beep (master bedroom is off kitchen ) I holler at them to "Get off the counter!". I also have the Elux Icon - got the newer model without the stainless band between hobs and controls. Cathy

You really have mom issues :-). No, you most likely will not burn your house down cooking with gas - certainly cooking bacon will not do it - the popping grease won't cause a fire - just keep the paper towels to drain the bacon away from the flame. I'm sure some people have horror stories about fires from gas ranges but many, many people have cooked for years with gas ranges without any problems. Do you have a friend with a gas range where you could try cooking some things just to see how you find it? If you're really scared of gas, induction would be a better choice than just straight electric.

To "Teach05" You do not need All Clad to cook on it. You do need cookware that a magnet will stick to, Iron or even the porcelain coated iron, Stainless Steel(again only the SS that a magnet will stick to) or what they call "Layered or Clad cookware" (again check with magnet). Many ppl like the clad or layered cookware---even those that cook with gas or conventional Electric cooktops. Most of this layered cookware is a mix(layers of) of SS, Copper and aluminum. It has better (More even heat distribution) than just a plain SS or aluminum pan. You dont havta spend the money on All Clad if you like that type of cookware. We have the "Emeril set" about $199 for a 10 piece set and it has worked great for the six months we have had the induction cooktop. Really nothing different as far as cooking with induction as compared to other methods cept as noted above. It is outrageously fast and controllable. It boils water "Right Now" and when you turn it down, it ceases boiling immediately--sooo ya dont hafta lift the pot off the stove to prevent boilover. We probably changed our "cooking technique" a little because of the above mentioned "Traits of induction" We usta turn the burner "Full On" with our old electric cooktop (or the DCS gas cooktop out on the patio), then we would wait for the water(or whatever) to boil, then turn it down---well if the fone rang, or one of the cats "MeOwed"--Mother nature called etc(You get my drift)---we came back to a boiled over pot or pan. Because induction is soooo fast(even with lower power) we just turn it bout halfway up, stuff comes to a boil and boils at about the rate we wanted---that saves power too--- really no need to "go full out" to bring something to a boil and then turn the burner down. Other thing that I mentioned is, "We cover the cooktop with paper towels when we cook", as we are getting too Lazy to clean it(even thou that is easy too)--butttt--still not as easy as tossing the paper towels in the trash or fireplace.
