Help - Zephyr or Kobe Island Range Hood?
Comments (9)I just purchased a Zephyr Milano Island hood. Main reason, the sone is .5 on low and obviously higher as one increases the intensity. Still the lowest from the hoods i compared. The other thing I liked is the glass on the milano. I didn't want to take away from a gorgeous forrest view. It was definitely a great decision. Added note; the salesman I bought it from suggested putting the hood on 15 - 20 minutes ahead of cook time on low and leave it on low during cooking. He said if I leave it off and then place it on a higher number that it wouldn't be as effective as getting the airflow running ahead of time. It really does work and it is so quiet my son went to put it on for me and it was already on!...See MoreCan you use an island hood for a wall hood?
Comments (7)Small "island" hoods are often used against walls. They're chimney hoods, and usually the wall behind is completely tiled. As Weissman said, they're not flat on the back. Problem is that to be a good island hood, over an open space, it should really be deeper front to back. There's no backsplash stopping the effluent to the back. Usually, for a 24--26" deep range they recommend at least a 30" deep hood, I think. That said, a slightly narrow hood would be a lot better than nothing. :) And if I remember right, your cooking surface isn't massive. I can't remember what style you cook, but you can also make sure to put the greasiest, smelliest, fume-iest stuff right under the fan. :) Alternative, see if the Habitat store has anything good, Craig's List, etc., knowing that you're eventually going to remodel and give it back to them......See MoreBest brand for *inexpensive* range hood?
Comments (7)You don't mention what style hood you're considering or whether you're venting out or recirculating via a charcoal filter. If you're cooking with gas, especially if you have any high output burners and are planning to do any woking, or high heat sauteing venting out is vastly preferable. If you don't have existing ductwork the price of the installation would probably be more than the price of the hood however so recirculating is more economical. Broan makes some excellent products. Here's a couple examples of various type hoods that might fit your budget and are available in 36" Undercabinet Model 88000 - can be ducted out or converted to recirculating Undercabinet model 89000 (must be ducted out) Probably most of Broans undercabinet hoods would fit your budget and it would just be a matter of taste. If you're looking for something a little different than these there are just about an infinite number of choices out there such as Whirlpools model GXW6536DXS MSRP: $549.00 A couple hints you may have already heard: Read the specs and installation directs or have your installer do so before the hood is purchased. All this information is right on the manufacturers web site. If you're venting out - be sure to use rigid metal vent only, plastic or metal foil dryer type duct work is not recommended and will cause your hood to be at least noisy and at worst ineffective. Have your duct run be as straight as possible but if you must have turns (elbows) try to have it be a maximum of three with at least 2 feet of straight run between elbows. As kindly as possible make sure your installer knows what he's doing. You want him to say no problem, I've installed miles of ductwork and dozens of these hoods....See MoreIsland range hoods (stainless steel)
Comments (2)"Lastly - any ones we should absolutely stay away from? Noisy - lights not strong enough, POS, breaks down etc? " See your quote below: "There seem to be a ton of them in the $300-400 range. Lots of no-name ones on Ebay and Amazon very inexpensive." You're asking for an oxymoron. Either give up performance and reliability. Or expand your budget. Good quality island hoods don't come cheap at all. Kobe and Faber are two of the least expensive decent quality hoods out there, but you're not going to see them for your budget unless they are scratch and dent. And without the duct cover extension. Have you looked at moving the cooking zone to a wall. Good ventilation can easily be 1/3 the cost for a wall vs. an island....See Morejwvideo
