Notepad/Wordpad gobbledegook

Someone sent me a document with an attachment in
Word with a .doc extension. When I click to open the attachment, the document comes up in Notepad with weird symbols. It looks almost like Russian. I do have the font set at Lucida, which I understand it is supposed to be, and the language in Western. Same thing when I tried Wordpad.

I opened Notepad and wrote a little note - everything was fine. Didn't try to send it to anyone.

I have Windows 7 home pro and use Live Mail. Any idea what is going on or how I can fix this? I tried to Google this, but couldn't get any answer I could understand.

Maybe the sender is using a non-standard keyboard? Might help if you could post an image of what you're seeing.

First thing to assume is that the doc header is corrupted.

Second is to see if it's salvageable. Assuming the doc is on neutral territory like the desktop and not just in the email client, right click on it and choose (if it's offered to you) "open with", and step through the choices you then get.

Sometimes this is a worthless exercise but sometimes it works very well.

Oh that's very nice Brenda and Pat:) That's about 20 daylillies lining the front between the garden area and the grass behind the different bulbs dieing out. There are 9 more roses that you can't even see behind the dragon and the redwood tree. I've still need to push some more of that walk on bark up behind the climbers to the fence and cover the clay and then get a couple loads of mulch and cover all this area. I plan to do that next weekend on payday. Most of these are the larger mini floras and floribundas and HTs showing here and yes it'll look way different in a few months and next year at this time way different. Especially once the climbers start filling in. I'm not really done and this will be an on going process too, I think a garden is always an evolving process:) The next 3 roses arrive on Friday I hear, so I'm taking a break until then! You just don't think you have nice gardens and I hear you talk about your plants and I don't believe a word of it! I've been yearning all fall and winter to have a small part of what you have, LOL* It'll be years before mine looks very lush. I still would enjoy pics, I love to see pics of flowers and plants.

are you using windows xp or vista? if vista then the windows firewall is good if xp then you need another software firewall like zonealarm free. I would definitely add to your list superantispyware, update it and run a full scan weekly malwarebytes antimalware, update it and run a full scan every week. spywareblaster update weekly and enable all protection secunia tool to make sure you have all updates on your pc installed programs. SpywareBlaster Secunia Personal Software Inspector SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Firewalls Pay close attention when doing installs of any programs and if it ask if you want to also include something extra such as a toolbar or office program or stuff like that be sure you uncheck those you do not want any of that extra junk just the actual program. The windows firewall and AVG only are definitely not enough for my liking, I would add the above. Remember to always update a program before running a scan so you have the latest definitions. And it is a very good idea to run an online virus scanner from time to time to make sure the one on your pc is doing it's job FREE Online Virus Scan and of course use firefox browser. Firefox these are the directions for malwarebytes antimalware download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Make life easier?? - forget it! As far as the new Word, I hate it. I've used Word for years and the new format takes me forever to remember where the common tools are. My office computer has Word 03 which I have no problem with. My home machine is 07 and I get so upset each time I have to use it. I still haven't found 'insert'. Nothing is where it was. What is annoying is trying to type up a letter quickly on 07, and spending more time trying to find the tools than it took to type the letter. Working with both versions each day drives me crazy. I use Notepad and when I go to save, it always saves as a txt. I do as Minnie and paste it to a Word document if I need to send it. I rarely do. I just use Notepad for a quick paste of something from the internet like a recipe. Jane

This is the extra coding that wordpad has added so that the page comes out like you have made it. Is this file saved as a "doc" file? If so then that is the reason for all the extra coding. It is better to learn html coding with notepad since it will not add any coding on its own. If it was notepad that you used in making the webpage perhaps you tried opening the page in wordpad to see it. this lets wordpad add its own coding so that it can read the page. When you saved the file did you save it as a txt file and added the .htm or .html after the file name? you must do this in order for IE to show the file as a html webpage. I learned html using notepad before there were editors to do html coding. I have tried many editors and i still think Microsoft Front Page is the best for people who just want to have their own webpage. You can find FP on ebay for around $50 for FP2000. I would choose this since it makes it easy to make webpages and you can concentrate on the graphics and content of your pages rather than the html coding. While it is still good to know html coding, it is not necessary to understand it all. JamesS

Try opening it in Wordpad. Notepad cannot recognise .doc files.

You should find Wordpad by clicking Start/All programs/Accessories/Wordpad.

A lot of misdirection going on.

Owbist is right. The doc suffix suggests it's in Microsoft Word format. Wordpad should open it. If you don't have MS Word, consider downloading free Apache Open Office (formerly just called Open Office), it's a compatible and very useful suite with word processing, spreadsheet. presentation, etc. components to mirror MS Office.

Many programs use little-used ASCII characters as shorthand symbols for formatting and other data that accompanies the main body of a file.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I was able to get the attachment into Word Pad, but that didn't help. The symbols were different, but still undecipherable. I'll get a hard copy tomorrow from the sender.

Google Drive (formerly called Google Docs) will open Word files too. Also free.

I don't know what I did, or how I did it, but this morning when I turned on my computer, a Word document was on my desktop that turned out to be the one I wanted in readable and printable form.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. One of them worked!

No disrespect intended...but if you can't share with others what worked...what you did and how...then it seems to be pretty much a wasted effort. Here's hoping you can provide better info next time you have a question.

I can understand your wanting to know what worked. Problem is, I don't know. I tried all the suggestions given and a few more besides, and none seemed to have worked. When I closed my computer last evening the problem did not seem to be solved and I was getting a hard copy from the sender.

This morning when I turned on the computer there was a Word icon on the desktop I hadn't seen before. I clicked it, and it opened to the document I wanted in a readable form. I'm not sure which of the things I tried put it there and if I have that problem again I may have to have trial and error to solve it again.

Snidely - Your response arrived after I discovered the document on my desktop so I did not download it and try it. However, I'll be downloading it in case this happens again since I get these minutes each month.
