What's the camera flash sound I'm hearing?

I'm quite computer literate and have an updated Virus protection program along with a firewall on my Dell. Today I'm noticing what sounds like a camera flash noise when my speakers are on. BTW: I do run CCleaner and Spybot regularly. We use a Comcast cable modem, FYI.

I almost feel like "someone" is watching me and taking snapshots within my computer.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and if I need to be concerned?

If it's a "click" you're hearing go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices..click on the Sound tab..scroll to Windows Explorer highlight Start Navigation...using the Drop Down menu change it to None..click Apply

If you're on a webpage or some program interface when you hear these sounds, it might be rollover effects or sounds when the cursor goes over certain things.

You've got two very young children and lots of history together -- What you have is so very important that you REALLY need to try to save it. But 'saving it' does NOT mean "suck it up"! You've already done plenty of that and it's not working... Right now, you're exhausted and feeling resentful; and hard as it is for you to believe, your wife is probably *also* exhausted and resentful. Caring for two little ones at home all day is truly exhausting, and the lack of sexual intimacy in a marriage with young children is legendary. It's become a running gag on TV precisely because it is so true... Get yourselves into counseling! It sounds to me like your wife may have some anxiety issues; and you and her parents have been enabling her for years. Weaning her from all of her crutches will take time, and possibly even medication -- but it can be done, and you all will be better off for it. It's not hard to see how her fears will be passed along to her children if they're allowed to continue. Of course you should be able to have the occasional night off. (As should she, and the two of you together.) And as others have already pointed out, what's with the homework duty? YOU are not the one who's going to be a teacher, and if her own work is not up to snuff, how is your fixing it helping her? Or the kids she will go on to teach? If she were trying to get into medical school, TOP grades would be necessary, but to teach? Sometimes 'good' is plenty good enough. Make some changes Struggling, and do it NOW. (Before you're so darned tired that nothing could work.) Stop just sucking it up and start talking to her. Organize your thoughts, and make a list (yes, a paper list) of the most important two or three points you need to make. Find ways to explain your points that are short, simple and kind; and don't let her get away with twisting your words into things you don't mean. Ask her to repeat back to you what you said (and meant) so you know that she understands you, and be sure to emphasize that it's because you want your marriage to last that you're saying these things.

ALL the time. And we see things that are unexplained too. The first thing that happened in this house was when I walked across the yard, across the cool decking to the old antique wagon to feed the birds. When I came back, the hose was on. It wasn't when I went by the first time. It had one of those sprayers on it that looked like the firehose type. You had to turn it to make the water come on. My son called me at work one day in early September. Wanted to know if I turned the heat on. This my not sound odd, but we NEVER use our heat...ever. He came home and it was over 100 degrees in our house and the heater was and had been on for quite awhile. Our bedroom has a door to the back yard. When it is nice out, we sleep with that door open. One night, we got into bed and I realized we hadn't opened it. DH said he would get it. He got out of bed and hadn't even taken a step, when the door flew wide open. We have a ceiling fan in our bedroom. DH was laying on the bed, watching it. It stopped by itself. He called out to me, but I was in the living room and didn't hear him. Then it started again. He came to see where I was, as he thought I was playing a trick on him. Our walk in closet light goes off and on, on and off by itself. As does the light in the hallway bathroom. We see shadows flitting down the hallway. DS has had what feels like a hand brush the back of his head in his bedroom, which is actually the den. He has heard a female voice say things and seen a figure walk out of his room. Our pit bull will sit in front of the sofa, like she is looking at someone sitting there. All the sudden she will stand up, keep looking at the sofa and just wag the heck out of her tail. No one is on the sofa. I am not sure if this "ghost" is the original owner who I have heard had alzheimer's and would walk out of the house and down the street unattended or if it is my late FIL. I used to be convinced it was my FIL, but I am not so sure anymore. But then I think maybe again it is. When we lived in our last house, he lived with us and passed away while we lived there. I used to hear him walking in the house, with his walker scraping the baseboards. I saw him twice in the garage. I am not afraid of the goings on in our house. However, my son? He is totally freaked out about it.

I am really sensitive to noise, so I feel for you, Florantha. I hope that the solutions you're exploring end up being straightforward and affordable. Noise is a big issue in our entire downstairs, not because of plumbing, but because the main air conditioning panel is in our living room, halfway up the wall where the stairs lead to the second floor. When the blower turns on, we have to turn the tv up 2 or 3 "clicks" in order to continue to hear dialogue. Plus, the washer and dryer are just behind the stairwell, in the hallway between the garage and the living room. DH and DD are constantly forgetting to close the door that insulates the living room from the washer and dryer noise, even when both machines are running. At cooking time, sometimes my DH and my DD get into a "sound war" without being conscious of it. She turns the tv up because he's turned the vent hood on, and then he turns up his radio in the kitchen... rinse, repeat, till he calls her to set the table and she shouts "WHAT?" Meanwhile, I drive them both crazy by turning the tv off, the radio off, and the vent hood down. That's me, the sound-sensitive one! Oh, and they feel slighted when I retreat upstairs or outside with the cordless phone, because I cannot concentrate with the tv or the radio going in the background. One really nice thing about our new kitchen is that our vent hood has four speeds instead of two, so it's not necessary to go to airplane-turbine levels of sound just to boil some water. Another odd thing -- we have an undercabinet radio (with a CD player and an audio in thingy for the iPod). We had a mixup with the undercabinet lights, and at first there were fluorescents installed. They caused tremendous interference with the radio! We had them swapped out for Xenon lights -- no interference. Of course, we got better sound quality, but worse energy efficiency, by making that swap. (The Xenon throw off a lot of heat onto the counters, like halogens.) I'm hoping that since we love the kitchen so much, we'll spend more time in the family room together, and less time in different rooms with noisemakers going!

It sure is annoying. I think its that ad they have on here with the grasshopper on it. I noticed that when I clicked on the RED STOP ICON at the top, in the tool bar, it stops. You can do that to those irritating ads that flash at you. Try it and post back if it worked.

abr4 - does that shut off the Windows sounds. I know there's a way, but can't remember. I like to hear my radio, but hate the Windows sounds.

I believe its that Orkin pest control ad on here with the cartoon picture of a cockroach behind bars. I have noticed that camera flash sound on this website for the past several days.

Thanks everyone. I tried pressing the red X button as someone stated above, but that did nothing. I haven't been hearing it today though.

I sometimes get this sound on other sites, but only when using IE as my browser. Just another reason to use another browser.

If you have a portable phone or a cell phone nearby your speakers, you will hear a clicking sound. Move them away and see if the sound goes away also.

It was definitely from that annoying Orkin ad. I told iVillage I wouldn't visit their sites until they got rid of that ad and I know I wasn't alone in my complaint. This is my first day back in about a month, and the ad is gone. It was so horrible!

OMG!!! I had the same thing happen to me! I would hear the sound of a digital camera flash/capture (slow click sound) about every 5 - 10 minutes, or so!! Very scary!! 1 have 4 different computers in my home: I have 1 (IBM Thinkpad) laptop, which was the ONLY computer I used to go on line. The other 3 PCs (HP, Mac, Dell) have NEVER been connected to the internet - but do have a wireless that I disabled after I noticed the problem with the camera flash sound. ALL of my comptuers now make this sound!!! Just started happening in December 2008 and I've been looking for some information, or mention of someone with the same problem SINCE then. This is the first time anyone else has reported the same issue. >> When I checked the Device Manager and revealed all hidden devices, I noticed that there was a "Video Capture" controller, and some other wierd things that have never been there before: a bunch of controllers, terminal services keyboard, terminal services mouse, terminal services redirector, more video controllers, video capture devices, channels, pipes, some kind of message que process... ALL of which I never installed on my computer and I can't figure out when they became installed. After trying to disable the Video Capture controller, I noticed the camera sound went away, and NOW my CD drive makes a noise at the same approximate 5 - 10 minutes interval. SOMETHING is happening. I thought that I was really proficient with my computer, but I missed something and now I've been breached. I believe that my computer activities are being "captured," or photographed (maybe even video recorded) and are transmitted somewhere through one of the "secure" pipes that I discovered on my computer. I NEED HELP! I have a bunch of other related issues, but this was the start of everything. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. (No my camera isn't attached, no I didn't change the audio drivers yet, because I never changed them in the first place, and they've been working well until now.) I want to know WHY it has happened before I start to change what this "thing" has done. I need to understand it so that I can combat it. CAN ANYONE HELP?

I've heard this sound twice already within a month's time like the sound of a camera flash but almost like the sound of the cocking of a gun. I first heard it about 3 weeks ago as I'm laying down in my bedroom and all that's on is my ceiling fan. My phone is on the night stand next to me but it didn't sound like it was coming from that. And the second time my wife and I heard it was like 30 minutes ago. She was sound asleep and I tapped her on the shoulder and asked her, "Did you hear that?", and she said, "yes" and I said,"that's exactly the same sound we heard last time," and she said ,"yes I know", and she slowly fell back asleep. I have no idea what it could be! I was thinking it could be someone watching us through my cell phone camera but I lay my phone camera face down so there wouldn't be no point in thinking anyone could get a good pic, but again, the sound didn't sound like it came from my cell so I have no idea what to think. If someone else has had this experience or something similar please comment!

I'm having the same clicking sound on my computer, Julius254 we are the first on this site that it is happening to in 2016. Does anyone have any suggestions? It is very scary in this day of advanced hackers that someone might be taking pictures of my passwords, searches, etc. For years I have always put a piece of masking tape over the camera on my computer so their not taking pictures of anything in my immediate surroundings, so what is the clicking sound?

Barbara, I think it's probably just a noise that's triggered by a particular action. If it bothers you, report back and I can try to help eliminate it. Otherwise, neither it nor the camera on your PC should cause you any concern. Enjoy your PC and use it without fear.
