Help me understand glass tile!

We are in the process of re-doing a kid's bathroom, and want to go bright, multi-colored with the floor.

I know that a lot of people are using glass tile now, and it seems that the only really bright stuff out there is glass.

But it's glass! Doesn't that mean that it is fragile? For those of you who have it, do you find that glass is as tough as ceramic tile? Does it clean as easily?

Help me step into the 21st century, please!

Check out this thread, paying particular attention to the second post on the page. If you've got the time, go thru the other 60 some odd pages. Some of the most intricate and outstanding tile work i've ever seen.

I used glass tiles on my boys' bathroom floor, set in the corners of a larger ceramic tile. I haven't had any problems at all. That glass tile on the John Bridge page that Bill has linked is stunning.

Do a google search on "design a shower system" and words like that. I was really intimidated when we started designing our system, too! I found two or three sites that had great little descriptions and even "wizards" that helped you pick all the right components. Basically you will need one valve that controls the water temperature (that can be a thermostatic or pressure balanced. if you're doing a luxurious shower definitely get thermostatic!) and then you will want a volume control valve (on/off/how much water comes out) for each of the seperate things you have: showerhead, hadnshower, jets. With that configuration you could theoretically have all three on at once, and as studio460 noted, you better be sure you have enough water pressure and volume to handle that, and likely oversized supply lines as well. Another way to handle it is to decide what's likely to be on at the same time. For instance, if you thought you'd have the showerhead on and EITHER the jets or the handshower, you could have a volume control for the shower, and a volume control for the other two, plus a diverter to choose between those two. Keep in mind that MOST companies sell the valves and the "trim" (the actual handle you see) seperately. So for instance you will need the $250+ valve PLUS the ~$175 trim for EACH combination. It can add up really, really fast!

Thanks, alku05 and bill for the clarification. I have been reading up more on through body porcelain and I guess its not really what we want for the wall. One more q-is glazed ceramic ok for shower wall? It turns out that the Keraben tile we picked is a glazed ceramic tile(NOT porcelain as the tile shop said) and the technical data says that the water absorption is greater than 10%. Wouldn't such high water absorption rate make it bad for showers? The other tile we were considering is a Florida Renaissance tile that is also a glazed ceramic. I can't find the water absorption rate listed anywhere for that. So the basic question is can a glazed ceramic tile be used for walls? Thank you for any input-I am going crazy trying to sort through the terminology here. Vinaya

VT is a number that represents a percentage of visible light that enters a given window. VT 0.52 = 52% of the light that hits that window (including the frame) comes through. VT is a function of frame profile (thickness) and the type of glass and Low-e Coating. The same Low-e coating that is used in the Double Hungs will not allow the slider or picture windows to be qualified because it will exceed the SHGC maximum of 0.30. This is because there is more glass in the slider and picture window as compared to the double hung. They must use a thicker low-e (SmartSun) to get the SHGC low enough on those window and the VT number will drop as a result.

We have a SpeedOven and a CSO. As others have said, the CSO is amazing. I'd absolutely get it again. The SpeedOven is not as life-changing. As a first approximation, think of it as putting both a regular wall oven and a microwave oven in the same space. That's of course a nice thing, and it was the main reason why we bought it. It saves space in the kitchen. But that's also an expensive way to go about doing this. So, not everybody will make the same decision. A SpeedOven in principle has unique cooking methods where it can use both oven and microwave simultaneously. I see the theoretical appeal, but in practice I find there are few dishes (e.g. scalloped potatoes) that benefit from it. Where a SpeedOven is obviously a full microwave replacement, a CSO is a different beast. It can do 70% of the tasks that a microwave does, and it probably does them better, albeit a little slower. Some households will have no problem getting rid of their microwave after they bought a CSO. But most households will have one or two activities that still work much better in a microwave (e.g. heating up a glass of milk). If you tell us all the activities that you use your microwave for, we can tell you whether you can get rid of the microwave and solely rely on a CSO or whether that will end up in frustration.

We used glass tiles on the floor is kids bath (3 boys 1 girl) and in the powder room. So far they have been easy clean up and beautiful to look at..while cleaning.lol

Very pretty bathrooms. Paddytc, what type of counter is in the bathroom. It looks great! Also, what floor tiles are those? We're thinking of using Cartglass / Hakatai... something like that anyway.

Annkatharyn, your bath is beautiful, but your goldfish bowl isn't. The reccomendation for goldfish is a minimum 30 gallon tank: they can reach 12 inches in length and live 40 years if cared for properly.

That tiny bowl could hold a betta, dwarf gourami, or pair of zebra danios. Keeping goldfish in it is as cruel as keeping a great dane in a kitty carrier.

Pattytc, I love love love your floor and wall colors. If you don't mind revealing your decorating secrets... what is the color and manufacturer of the floor tiles?

Chewtoy and josie m- my tiles are from the Sume-i series. They are Izu natural with bright white grout. My counter tops are either called blue marble or blue sky marble. The counters are white with blue a and green mixed in. Really love them. It is all very easy to clean. In the kids bath/ shower I just put in stock white subway tiles spent the extra for the glass shower doors. Thanks for all the kind words and hope this was helpful.

Oruboris--thanks for the advice on the goldfish but spooky(orange and black) and goldie have been with us for 2 years and seem to really enjoy their cozy cottage.

Sorry I mixed up the names, and sorry to continue the hijack, but you won't find a responsible fishkeeper anywhere who reccomends keeping goldfish in a goldfish bowl. The fact that they've lasted this long is a tribute to their toughness and your maintenence, not their 'cozy' [and inappropriate] environment.

I am grateful for all kinds of posts on this forum, for people posting pictures of tile, bathrooms etc. The bathroom above is beautiful and I'm glad to see and hear about details. But I'm also glad that oruboris has brought up the subject about the goldfish and their safe keeping and hope that it will lead to better informed decisions, if not by this owner then perhaps by others who will remember that pets are not for decoration.

The tile work is beautiful, Paddy, were those all individual or on the sheets? Great workmanship either way.

And as a goldfish lover, I agree with Oruboris and with Tartanhabit as well. I would hope that anytime we see that there is an opportunity for bettering the life of a creature that we step forward and say so. The opportunity to learn how to become better stewards of lives entrusted to us for safekeeping is a good thing.
