Help me choose--KA or Bosch DW
Comments (14)I want to echo what Wolfc70 said, and recommend you get a lower-end Miele. That's what I did. I have a Miele with the controls on the front. I saved hundreds of dollars (I think about $800) over the similarly-featured Miele with hidden controls. Miele is pretty slick when it comes to industrial design, and the controls on its doors look clean and modern. I also like to be able to see what cycle the DW is on which you can't do when you have the hidden controls. I think both Bosch and KA are good machines, but the Miele is in a different class. BTW, the Bosch interiors always looked small to me. I would advise you to bring with you to the store a couple of large items from home that you typically put in your DW, and put them in a Bosch display model, and see what you think. Don't worry about the salesperson looking at you funny - (A) people do it all the time, and (B) you're spending a lot, so you should make sure the machine fits your needs....See MoreMiele Owners Pls Help! New Miele DW has terrible odor!
Comments (34)I pulled the filter and checked mine last night. There is water like yours and there was some small bits of food particles. Did not smell. Although It finished running a load about 18hrs before. I can't test the two day thing since it pretty much always has dirty dishes in it. When there is dirty dishes in it obviously will have an odor that will build over time. I scrape but do not rinse my stuff. Wasn't as hard to break the habit that we had with rinsing the dishes since we were without a DW and sink for like 8 months for my remodel so it was like starting over :). I just started using the DW a few weeks ago. I have started using Miele Tabs and using 1/2. No rinse aid or salt. I have a whole house water softener and I just tested the water again and its at like 2 grains vs 28 without the softner. Kas, You use Tabs and rinse aid. I thought based on the directions that rinse aid should not be used with Tab detergents? I set the unit to not dispense any rinseaid. I do get white spots on silverware, plastic and glasses. Not sure I should add rinse aid....See MoreHelp me choose a Miele DW?
Comments (72)Last night I did the Pots/Pans program with all those settings activated in the service menu. I noticed that during the pre-wash there was more water (middle of filter handle), but in the main wash and rinses the water amount was normal (below handle). Here are the times: pre-wash 10 minutes, main wash 70 minutes (water temp said 157 F on my baking thermometer near the end of the cycle), first 5 minute interim rinse, second 5 minute interim rinse, 35 minute final rinse (thermometer read 142 F), and then 45 minute dry with the lower fan on. Without those settings activated in the service menu, the Pots/Pans would normally do a pre-wash 10 minutes, main wash 60 minutes (temps read 147 F), one 5 minute interim rinse, 25-30 minute final rinse (haven't measured the temp), and then a 20 minute dry with the lower fan on. Keep in mind the few times I've done a temp measurement, I was using a cooking thermometer that I'd have to place in the water for a minute to get a reading. So using the Pots/Pans program it does appear that the #23 for extra water only happens in the pre-wash (not main wash, interim rinse, or final rinse), the #20 for increase temp did raise the main wash water an extra 10F and washed for 10 minutes longer, the #26 does do a 2nd interim rinse, and the #27 for improved drying did increase the final rinse cycle time by about 10 minutes and then the drying mode increased 20 minutes with the fan on. I'll have to check the Normal program to see if any of those settings will effect it, but I already know that the #26 does not add any interim rinse to the Normal mode, since I tried that one on Monday....See MoreMiele DW too nice for me?
Comments (11)i've had our excella for about 1.5 years and it's still doing really well. baked on/crusty food comes off and the dishes/utensils come out extremely clean. baked on eggs and two-day-old-oatmeal-in-a-pot are still a challenge and i usually handle those separately. fav programs - sensor (it really does work!), normal, pots-n-pans, saniwash and short (not rinse and hold). the only learning curve i had (still have sometimes), is figuring just how much soap to use, especially with soften water. use too much, etching will kick in. too little, things don't get clean nuff. for the most part, a full load will only require one TABLESPOON of soap...no more. that seems to do the trick. i used to use miele tabs and was impressed. however, there were times where i used to much for a medium load (i know ..i know...ppl will tell you to run a dw fully loaded...but sometimes, i don't have enuff dishes for a full load. in addition, the excella has a load sensor that uses the appropriate amount of water based upon the amount of dishes in the dw). using powdered soap (cascade "all" and no icky liquid soap allowed in the excella), allows me to precisely use the soap i need for the load. tabs, typically, are usually full or half (i used to use half miele tabs all the time). the new enzyme based soaps are the key, along with an effective dw, to achieving the fantastic results these dw are doing these days. hope this helps....See Moredeeageaux
