Adobe's reader is here. However, if you wait, someone else may offer alternatives.

In the meantime, if you have Firefox, you might try that. It has a built in PDF reader.

Chrome also has a built in PDF reader. I also find Foxit PDF reader useful. Free, of course.

I tried Mikie's advice and it didn't work. I also tried adding yahoo to my trusted sites and even turned off the Internet Protected Mode off. I not only like to download puzzles but read ebooks and I could open 3 new ebks but could not download them to save them. I've never had trouble before so I'm really stumped. Mlou

Make life easier?? - forget it! As far as the new Word, I hate it. I've used Word for years and the new format takes me forever to remember where the common tools are. My office computer has Word 03 which I have no problem with. My home machine is 07 and I get so upset each time I have to use it. I still haven't found 'insert'. Nothing is where it was. What is annoying is trying to type up a letter quickly on 07, and spending more time trying to find the tools than it took to type the letter. Working with both versions each day drives me crazy. I use Notepad and when I go to save, it always saves as a txt. I do as Minnie and paste it to a Word document if I need to send it. I rarely do. I just use Notepad for a quick paste of something from the internet like a recipe. Jane

open(unzip) see I said the words baffle me, I unzip the file, and the pages are there for me to work into a word document, and then into a pdf for ease in sending, but the editing isn't the same anymore, I get the pages in paint now, rather than just the unzipped format. I can click open with Microsoft Picture manager, and still get to the editing part to go to word document, but is another step added and I would like to go back to the short version of editing. I have all the facilities to unzip files, just am wondering why all of a sudden I have paint program when I want to just plain edit the pages I have. this is all Greek to me, too much to take in, and as long as I can still edit, tho it takes longer, will stick with what I have, perhaps someday it will rite itself? You know, every time I run into problems, I kick myself, for ever getting acquainted with a computer, had I known what a hoodo it would be for me to work with, I never would have gotten into this. I enjoy it a great deal, but sometimes it is just overwhelming to me. I am a laborer, not a secretary, and hard to work with this sort of stuff. Thanks to all for your help, appreciate your interest in my problem, maybe I can find my magic wand and wave it?

How to fix doc and docx file?

Two ideas: (1) In Word 2013, do a File>Open>Computer and Browse to the file. Click the drop-down arrow on the Open button and select Open and Repair: (2) For the DOC file, you should be able to see the text (no formatting, of course) by simply opening the file in a text editor, such as Notepad (this doesn't work for DOCX). Any reputable reader other than Adobe is the way I would go. AR is bloated, and a resource hog.

If the time comes that you wish to remove AR be sure to consider REVO at its advanced setting. You will be amazed during the process how much the AR uninstaller orphaned.

You think Adobe Reader is bloated or a resource hog?

On my PC, currently active Chrome and Firefox instances each require over 200 megs of memory. No problem, well within the capability of any machine.

Opening a large-ish PDF document in Adobe Reader required 20 megs. That's a trivial amount in my book

I happily use Adobe Reader and have had no problems. There are times that I wish to perform certain steps (editing, form completion, etc) on PDF docs, I see no reason to risk having an issue by using a Brand X substitute.

To each his own, most roads lead to Rome.

I'm confused.

You said in your post that you don't use Adobe Reader for a reason I think is fallacious. I explained why.

If, then, it's suitable to use, there's no need to consider what might be a substitute.

Adobe Reader has always worked wonderfully on my 7 yr old Dell XP SP3 w/2GB ram. Never understood the hatred of it...never had the need to look elsewhere.

Adobe Reader was one of the most targeted third-party applications by cybercriminals and will continue to be. I don't need it to read a PDF File. I think that's true for most causal users here at this forum. I see no reason for the risk, when brand x is available. Adjust your post according to the user needs. Don't regurgitate the "If it works on my computer it must be good for yours"

Whatever. Different strokes for different folks. I don't have the time or desire. If a member wants to use a chisel and a slab of granite so be it.

I prefer to use the freeware Sumatra rather then Adobe for the reason Zep stated.
