Lenovo VERY slow

I have only had this computer since December and I find that it is really slow to boot up. It has Vista installed. When I just started it up, it took about 20 minutes to get going. Could it be that I might need more memory. I dont know how much memory is on this machine, but it was a thought.

In the run line you might type in
msinfo32
That will shou you ram and lots of other things too.

Then also in the run line you might type
eventvwr
open the folder 'Custom View and click Administrator. You can look at double click errors there and they might have a how to fix it if you follow their links.

Another thing for vista which is fairly easy is again in the run line copy past this in ;
SFC /ScanNow
that will search and fix any of the major system files that might be corrupt or missing.

Listen to Mikie. There's more than memory going on.

With that kind of start-up time, I'd consider preserving my data and simply starting all over again with total wipe and reinstall of OS. Suggest that may be your shortest route....unless you really want to figure out what's happening. I wouldn't.

That is a very long time to root - almost a year. What cultivar is this cutting? What color? Is it wrinkled? Most cuttings do not make it for a year without roots bringing water and nutrients, but perhaps yours is better because you're water rooting it. How long is the cutting? Shorter cuttings, reds and rainbows take longer to root that large cuttings, white and yellows. If you just can't root it, one option is to send it to Luc at Florida Colors. He can graft it for a small charge and you'll have a plant with a vigorous root system with your cutting grafted onto it. Good luck with this cutting. I know how difficult it can be to have cuttings that just don't root.

How are you paying them? Hopefully through a bank and not upfront. Sounds like a lot of problems for you, but just because they are slow doesn't mean they aren't good. You say they are doing a great job but then hope they won't so you can say "enough". I don't want to sound rude but do you want it quick or right (of course I would want both! LOL) As far as working on 5 things at once, that's common. Sometimes material isn't there or has been received unusable for some reason. Would you want them to stop and wait for the usable material so they could finish one thing at a time? Our GC ordered trusses well ahead of time but they were 3 weeks late in arriving. That wasn't GC's fault but now our timeline is a over a month behind schedule. As far as being slobs, what do you define as a slob? Left over food and trash? Or, pieces of wood cuttings and shavings? We're building on a Scenic Byway, so DH told GC upfront that the job site would be kept clean, still 8 months into our build and DH has to remind GC ever so often. If you are paying your GC as work is completed you can easily tell him there will be a penality for any job cleanup you need to have done in the future. He may quit on you but it sounds like that might be ok. Good luck!

Next time you take pictures of your garden, do it on a cloudy day. It's very hard to see through the high contrast of sunlight and deep shadow when the sun is on it or you use a flash. Here's an example. I rarely use this picture because it shows off the problem I have with my mower. My mower shreds the tips of my grass. It's very hard to see in the upper picture because of the contrast, but it's easy to see in the lower picture. From your picture it looks like you have St Augustine. If you don't this still applies. Your mower either needs to be sharpened or you need to crank up the motor speed to get a cleaner cut. Your other problem is that, and I'm guessing from what I see, you're watering waaaaay too frequently. It could be frequent rainfall, but the effect is the same. Now your grass has a disease. If you can back off to deep watering once a week the disease should stop spreading so quickly. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Once a week means not every day or every 3 days. It means once every 7 days unless you have daily temps over 100. Then you can go to once every 5 days. I've had good luck every year using corn meal against the disease in my lawn. As corn meal decomposes on the soil, it attracts a predatory fungus that feeds on the disease fungus. Three (full) weeks after you apply the corn meal you should see the spread stop altogether and new grass coming in without developing the brown spots you are seeing now.

Speed comes with age. Don't fret too much; Osmanthus species are not tropical plants and naturally grow seasonally, i.e. Spring, with little or no growth later. Osmanthus fragrans does push some in the late Summer, and that is often where you'll find your flowers developing. Make sure you're giving them a Winter rest. I don't know of any species that don't benefit from some chilling. Even Osmanthus fragrans likes time with temperatures in the 30-40 F. range. See to that, keep the nitrogen on the moderate side (5-10-10), keep the potting tight, they'll perform.

Thank you both very much for the advise. I really did not want to start all over again, but that may be the easiest. Anyhow, I am going to go to RUN and enter those things that you advised me Mikie and see what is going to happen. It is very frustrating to have the computer this slow. I was almost going to install Windows XP again and get out of Vista.........Mystic

I think at least 2 GBytes is the base recommendation for RAM with Vista, where 1 GBytes is he recommendation for XP. If the machine came with Vista installed, I'd expect it to have the 2 Gbyes of RAM.

20 minutes, wow, and I thought W2000 Professional was bad. Can't say I remember, but I will estimate it took 2-3 minutes to boot. I'll guess my current XP Home takes less than 1 minutes to boot.

I have vista - came with a laptop i bought in december. Right now it boots to the desktop in around 40 seconds unless its configuring updates or some new install that required a reboot.

Its had 1, 2, and 3 gb of ram in it. Can hardly tell the difference between those amounts of memory for booting/websurfing/email/light graphics, etc. More ram actually boots a couple seconds longer as it does the basic ram check at boot - more takes longer to cycle through .

Interesting. Most of my windows-friends (xp or vista) boot up in about 2 minutes. That's what my previous PC did (xp) although sometimes it took 3-4...don't know why.

Current iMac boots in about 45 sec. Consistent from the beginning two years ago.

Mikie: You mentioned looking up some sites on the RUN menue. My question is, where do I find RUN in Vista........Mystic

The RUN line is on your Start popup window.

I run in sort of the classic mode and RUN is right at the bottom..... and the default mode has a different start popup window but think its near the bottom off to the right.

You can also run those in a command prompt which is at Start/Programs/Accessories ... might need to right click it and choose Run as Administrator.
