Rethinking wall mount faucet; your thoughts?

Originally I thought a wall mount faucet was the perfect solution to what I thought would be a shallow vanity. The vanity is now back to a standard 24" depth and now I'm rethinking whether I need, and want, a wall mount faucet.

Your thoughts, from people who have or are considering them? Is a WMF any more or less practical? Any more or less splashy than a countertop faucet? Easier/harder to install? To use? (Especially by ADA criteria) Do I need to install the sink especially close to the back of the vanity? Thoughts on aesthetics? Tell all!

I vote for countertop faucet, but that's just my own preference. I always think wall mount faucets look a little like an outdoor spigot. Which is a cool look, if that's what you want - it just wouldn't be what I want. :-)

As for practicality - I gotta figure that if you ever need to replace the faucet, it would be easier to replace the countertop one. Don't wall mount faucets have their own valves put in the wall? If you change one, do you have to change the valves? (I could be wrong.)

We just moved into our renovated home and I love my wall mount faucets (grohe single lever with spout). What you say about replacement may be true but I decided to go for it. So much cleaner, easier to use etc. We have undermount sink and counter at 37 in ht.

I think putting the piping or the shutoff in the wall does put them at risk of freezing. On the heat tape....I dealt with mobile homes for years in Vermont where it gets cold. There is always a spot where the water line exits the ground and goes into the home. If you just wrap it in insulation it eventually freezes so people use heat tapes. The normal, flat heat tape was the most common and the most dangerous. If the tape overlapped itself, it could heat up and start a fire. The one product I found to be the best, and all of the MH installers I know used it, was called "Frost Tex" or Frost Tec...can't remember. It's blue in color, round in shape and sold in hardware stores and is on a roll so you have to know how much you need. They cut off what you need and you have to buy a two piece plug kit. The store will also have a chart telling you how many wraps per foot you will need to protect to a certain temperature. This type of tape can overlap itself and not burn out and I have never seen one go bad no matter how old. You should also purchase a package of flat fiberglass insulation to wrap over the pipe and heat tape. The package normally also comes with some plastic to go over the insulation and acts as a vapor barrier. I bought a bunch of stuff one time and there was a whole case of the flat heat tapes. I threw the whole thing away because I wouldn't use them. That is how little confidence I have in the old flat versions. People still like the flat ones because they are cheaper.

When looking at you kitchen pictures (great kitchen by the way) it looks as if you wall mounted bridge faucet has extenction to the spout. I am looking for a faucet that I can wall mount and use with a super single from blanco. I really do not like side sprays and it looks as if a faucet like yours would reach the corners. Could you please tell me where your got yours and do you like the way it works in a large sink. thanks elizabeth

The valve is right behind the joystick (single-lever handle). The cartridge is there too, inside the valve body, and it's removable and replaceable once you unscrew the escutcheon (round plate) that the joystick comes out of. Not a big deal. Wall mounts are what they are. It wouldn't worry me. Are you working with copper plumbing? Pex plumbing? CPVC plumbing? Some other kind? They are all good. Use good materials. When in doubt, use the better of two choices. Do a good job. That's all. Sleep tight. I opened the PDF on the Kohler site. The escutcheon is 2-5/8" (6.7 cm) diameter, and it's only 2â³ (5.1 cm) diameter for the valve with single-lever handle. Personally I'd like a One-Inch (1" or less than 26mm) cartridge for my next wall mount project. If anyone knows of one, holler back please.

Re-thinking getting glass in cabinets...thoughts?

At the summer house, there's two upper cabinets with glass panes, separate from the rest of the cabinets with solid wood doors. I use it to hold barware (highballs, old fashioned, wine, pilsner, etc.) I like it b/c it's clear that's where the bar area is. The booze is in the lower cabinet. I do have a row of vintage pitchers on the top-most shelf for a little color. You could dedicate a function to one or both of your cabinets to take advantage of the glass. Stacking coffee cups with saucers looks good or buy a cabinet shelf to make stacked items look neater. Meh, just a thought. I prefer a modern a style, which I don't see too much of on GW, so I tend towards clean lines, less decorative knick-knacks behind glass myself.

The plumbing for a countertop faucet is much more flexible long term. You can change from a vessel style faucet to an 8" widespread or just about anything without having to change the plumbing. ...on the other hand, if you want to change the height of a WMF, you have to break open the wall to replumb. ...or if you want to change the faucet itself, you will probably need to change the valve and again, break into the wall.

One of our faucets in a powder room is a WMF and we love it though - it's no more "splashy" than a post style vessel filler (mounted on the countertop) like we have in our master bath. We made sure to buy a high quality faucet so that we wouldn't have to change it out anytime soon...

We have a WMF in our new master bath. I love it. We have very hard water and I am constantly wiping up spills and drips from the base of the other faucets in the house that are all countertop. ANything left for a few days becomes a mineral deposit. Not so with the WMF- no drips and hence no nasty deposits to wipe up.
