I have no idea who you had there but I and many others use zone alarm software firewall right along with our router firewall which is a hardware firewall.

My microsoft updates just fine with both my zonealarm pro and my router firewall on.

It sounds like he did not configure something right.

Have you logged into the router and looked around. It may have a simple index item marked Firewall. While I've never lived with a linksys, all I have been in are pretty simple. Off/Low/Med/High

Rather than turning it off you might try stepping it down a notch .

Maybe he turned off computer firewalls because he had problems networking the two together and didn't take the time to figure out those firewalls configurations or replace them with something else he was familiar with.

Thanks, he said the free ZA didn't allow any options to configure the network. I was concerned when he tried to uninstall it and I stopped him. One computer is a laptop which I take home. I wanted a firewall working when it wasn't networked. He left it on and set it so I can turn it on manually. Therefore, when the machines are networked, they are protected by the router firewall, not ZA.

Something is blocking the MS update and I have to assume it is this firewall. I have to learn my way around this setup because I refuse to call this creep who really ripped us off.

If you can't figure it out post the model of the Linksys and somebody with the same model can probably quickly tell you what to look at.

Thanks Mikie. I'm at home and don't have it in front of me. It's Linksys N High Speed wireless 'something.' The guy charged us $225.00 for it and I saw it in Staples for $85.00.

Just when I thought I was getting better with computers, I have to deal with this stuff. Mikie I don't understand ports or any of this. I don't even know how you found the page you posted. I tried going to Linksys.com and there was nothing like you posted.

Then I clicked on the North American Continent & chose USA.

Choose a product [arrow]
Routers and Access points [drop down list] Wireless Router.

Then I choose the top right pict of a two antenna unit, its drop down list for the model number that I guessed ..WRT150N .
,,, on that page I typed in the question; Can't get windows updates.

Then they show a list of bullet links, this time I clicked More at the bottom of that list.

. then the link for

has several possible fixes. One is that image above.

Thank you, I didn't find that at all. I will try your directions tomorrow when I get to work. I can't do it at home, and its hard to have time to do it at work. But I appreciate your help.
