Urgent question about sink placement in granite

We just had our granite installed today and I'm not happy.

First off - the sinks look funny. They are set 4 inches back from the front of the counter which leaves 7 inches behind them. Is this normal? They are rectangle shaped sinks and it just looks awkward to me. Would you be happy with this or am I being too picky?

And I'm realy unhappy because the granite installers damaged up my vanity pretty bad - they gouged two doors on top pretty deep and one of the doors has a small gouge on the front. Looks like they lost control of the drill and it slid accross the doors (twice). They also must have scraped the finish off above the door because it looks like they tried to fix it with a sharpie. It's a black cabinet with a smooth semi gloss sheen. Fortunately, the fabricatior said he would cover the damages by his installers.

I am so over all remodeling the bathrooms.

How horrible that they gouged your new vanity! I would be sick.

My sink was installed in my granite vanity top last week. It is also a rectangular sink, a Kohler Ladena. It is exactly four inched from the sink to the front of the granite and seven inches from the back of the sink to the backsplash, so that must be standard. Looks fine to me.

Thanks dedtired - it is a Kohlr Verticyl. I just thought they were centered. I think after I saw my cabinet I was just looking to be mad.

The cabinet maker is coming tomorrow to check the damage. I know at least one door will need to be remade.

I had a good cry this afternoon over the vanity!

This mounting method is fine, and quite common. Guys in my area only do it when they don't have room to use the clips. If the sink fills most of the interior space, they have no way to attach them.

It's your pantry that's throwing you off. And, right now, the right side of the room has all of the tall cabinets, making the whole thing "tipsy" feeling and too heavy on one side. (At least that's how I drew it out.) Pantry/fridge/oven walls work best when they're on a separate free standing wall, not when they're attached to other parts of the kitchen. WHy not have 2 pantries in each of the corners. That would look a lot more symmetrical and make the job of centering the windows much easier. You could then place the oven stack adjacent to the pantry on the left nearer the cooktop and the fridge adjacent to the pantry on the right, and still have room for a snack center next to it. Symmetry. Or, another alternative would be to move the wall oven into the other corner.

Urgent question about granite fabrication and seam placement

I appreciate everyone's feedback. Unfortunately I don't have the dimensions of the slab as that information was not provided to me. The slabs were selected a few months ago so it seems there has been ample time to have realized a second seam was needed based on the layout. I didn't select the fabricator - it is who my contractor uses. I obtained bids and interviewed several contractors. I had glowing recommendations from multiple people. The contractor raved about the fabricator and showed me several examples of their work that were very high quality. I started to feel less confident when I arrived for the mapping and felt rushed through the process and they could not provide an explanation as to why a second seam was necessary. I recognize that sometimes there are considerations that the average homeowner might not take into account, so I would have liked it explained to me with sufficient time to change to something different if necessary. If I hadn't insisted on attended the mapping, I would not have known of the second seam until installation. If the countertop was fabricated with one seam as originally planned, the largest piece would be 7'6", which doesn't seem unusually large to me, but there may be information that I don't have. Thanks again for the feedback. It's been a tough process and I spent alot of time planning and researching and am upset to think of being disappointed in one of the most visible parts of the kitchen. Thought I had done adequate due diligence and planning.

Urgent: 2-3 hours to decide on faucet placement

So this is the new faucet, correct: If you're right-handed, I approve of the idea of putting it on the left with the lever on the left. I had a similar faucet with lever on the left-hand side of the sink, and loved the position of the water spout but not the lever, which we put to the right of the faucet. I'd always wind up crossing under the water to turn it off with my left hand. So to be short, I like your plan. But do make sure this is possible with this model, and by putting the handle to the left you won't be having to push it back rather than forward to turn it on, etc!

jo-i-am, is your faucet installed yet? Typically there is more space behind the sink in order to have room for the faucet and not to crowd the faucet. Depending on the design of your faucet, you may need a little space behind it to be able to grasp the handles, or to clean in front and behind it. My experience is limited to only a few projects like this, but the spacing you describe sounds about right to me -- depending, again, on the design of your faucet. If your faucet isn't in yet, then reserve final judgment until you see your sink with the faucet installed; it may look better than just the "naked" countertop.

To others reading this thread, the lesson here is a good one: make sure you discuss the placement of your sink and your faucets with your granite fabricator at the time of templating, and again at the time of installation if your fabricator drills the faucet holes on-site (some do it in the shop; some do it at your house). Placement of the sink may be constrained by your vanity cabinet and/or your faucet, but the granite people will tell you what is or isn't possible, or advisable -- and you stand a much better chance of getting what you want (or at least not being surprised with the end result).
