When, where, and by whom did the @ become a #?

TIA

I'd be lying if I said I understood the question.

Is there a problem making a distinction between SHIFT+2 and SHIFT+3 keys?

# is for Twitter, called a hashtag. The @ is still in web addresses.

Pellet stove
Q

Instead of the cheap thermostat that came with my Quadra-Fire stove; I use a digital programmable thermostat which is very accurate. I haven't actually measured the temp of the heat coming directly out of the blower exhaust on the stove; but I can tell you that different brands of pellets make a difference in cleaning more than anything else. The Liginetics brand and Stove Chow brand (I get Liginetics pellets at Lowes, Stove Chow at Home Depot) leave a good bit of clinkers, but they are very easy to clean out of the firepot (they tend to "clump together" and don't stick to the firepot. The Bio-Plus brand (cheaper, only $3 per bag at walmart) don't leave hardly any clinkers at all, but the residue that they do leave seems to "fuse" itself to the firepot, and I have to take a small chisel to scrape the firepot every couple days. I don't care for the Eureka pellets (comes in a red and white bag). They have a strong odor of wood, and for some reason they burn like they've got lighter fluid in them! Maybe it's just my stove; but the flames they make are huge.

Selling by quit claim? (Canada)
Q
Comments (2)
Although this may be a case of a seller who thinks that a quit claim is just a fast & maybe cheap way to divest oneself of real property, if I were interested in this house, I'd ask an attorney before I took one more step. Here, quit claims are statements that say, "I don't claim to have any interest in this property, but if I do, I cede it." They're typically used when a couple divorces & one of them cedes his/her interest to the other, or when someone dies & the children cede their interests to their surviving parent, etc. They are primarily devices for preventing or clearing clouds on title. They're *not* used to convey a property.

Do roses prefer semi arid to humid environments?
Q
Comments (29)
That's where I want to move to also! My friend who lives in Corvallis has two rose bushes, one of which is Gertrude Jekyll. Here in Albuquerque, GT is a prickly mess that blooms once in the spring. Hers is a mannerly shrub just like a HT, that has no more prickles than most, and blooms all summer. Yes, I think the altitude is the problem. The difference between day and night is 30-40 degrees, and this means that in the Spring and Fall, although the days can be warm, the nights can be below freezing. In the summer, with nights in the 60's, the days are in the 90's or above. I think it is hard for the roses to grow just during the ideal time of the day. They don't start growing in the spring until the night temps are consistently above freezing, but this means that the days are in the 80's, and it is a brief time before the day temps are too hot. Also, at this altitude, I think it's a lot harder for the roses to keep up with the transpiration - just like the rest of us. It just evaporates quickly into the thin atmosphere. Water too much and the soil is waterlogged and the roots can rot or get fungal disease. Water too little and the plants have a hard time growing and a harder time blooming. If the plants are just not genetically able to manage the water (too few feeder roots, to many stomata, poor vasculature) or the sun intensity, or the temperatures, they won't grow, or the flowers are small and fry. I notice also, that the same roses that grow well in the valley don't necessarily grow well in the foothills where I live. That 500 feet or more difference in elevation can make a big difference, and I'm at a slightly higher elevation than Denver.

Plant ID, just out of curiosity now - Fern #1?
Q

Yes, this is in Maryland in the front yard spreading all over! And surprisingly, we still have so many other plants all over. The previous owners were big on plants. Hard to keep up with everything they have :( Will definitely be posting more. Thank you!

Thank you, sushipup!

I'm seeing that more and more and had no idea what it was. Should it only be used on Twitter? Didn't it used to be used to indicate pounds?

Reminds me that I heard a couple days ago about some of the words that are being added to the new official Scrabble dictionary. The only one I remember that they mentioned is bestest. (I will not add that to Spell check.)

BTW, I don't tweet. :-)

Yes...it did, and I don't see why its name was changed to hashtag.

grrrr....

Here is a link that might be useful: How the Pound Sign Became Known as the Hashtag

I think I'd be inclined to think of the # by itself as a "hash" mark/symbol.

Then if you tack an identifier onto the hash, it becomes a hashtag.

So # is just a hash.
And #identifier is the hashtag. Right?

I don't use Twitter though, so probably it will remain a pound/number sign to me.

I don't want to confuse my #2 pencil.

Just like I won't be buying 10 hashtags of potatoes.

And for fun, the # is still a designation for pound, and @ is still a designation for per/each.

Drives me crazy when people think that @ stands for "about". Many do!

(by the way, the tildy ~ means "about")
DA_Mccoy

Not to correct, but just in case a member is researching the punctuation I believe it is tilde.

As a supplement to DA's comment, a tilde before a number means "approximately". "About" can mean that too but it means other things as well that tilde doesn't. The +/- (plus or minus) designation is similar in meaning too.
