I'm seeing that more and more and had no idea what it was. Should it only be used on Twitter? Didn't it used to be used to indicate pounds?

Reminds me that I heard a couple days ago about some of the words that are being added to the new official Scrabble dictionary. The only one I remember that they mentioned is bestest. (I will not add that to Spell check.)

I think I'd be inclined to think of the # by itself as a "hash" mark/symbol.

Then if you tack an identifier onto the hash, it becomes a hashtag.

So # is just a hash.
And #identifier is the hashtag. Right?

I don't use Twitter though, so probably it will remain a pound/number sign to me.

Drives me crazy when people think that @ stands for "about". Many do!

Not to correct, but just in case a member is researching the punctuation I believe it is tilde.

As a supplement to DA's comment, a tilde before a number means "approximately". "About" can mean that too but it means other things as well that tilde doesn't. The +/- (plus or minus) designation is similar in meaning too.
