Marble Vanity Top Cleaners and Sealers

Which name brand or household products have you found to work the best for cleaning and sealing your marble vanity tops?

I do know that the cleaner must be pH neutral to prevent etching. We do not use our vanity for much more than washing hands and hand washing some delicate laundry. So far I haven't cleaned it with anything beyond wiping down with some water. i also am interested in hearing any specific products others have used to clean marble (safely).

Bill Vincent recommended Miracle 511 Impregnator or Stone Tech Impregnator Pro as sealers for my marble vanity top.

Can you get a sample of the marble you're concerned about and see how it holds up to some tests (products you use, etc)? I believe crema marfil and bursa beige are also marbles. So you'll have the same risks with the tile you've already selected. As I understand, all calcite-based stones (marble, limestone, etc) are prone to etching by acids. Sealers can help minimize (and to some extent eliminate?) staining. Choosing marble for your bathroom means you will either have to accept etching or be cautious with what products come in contact with your stone (cleaning products, cosmetic products, etc). I've had a carrera marble counter in my guest bathroom for nearly two years and there isn't a single etch or stain on it. It was sealed and I am extremely cautious about what products are allowed around it. I use a marble-safe cleaner for the counter and am extremely careful when I clean the sink or mirror. I only put out pH neutral hand soap. Your fabricator is simply trying to protect himself by making you sign a waiver stating that you are aware of these qualities of the stone you've selected. You could continue with marble or choose a different product like quartz, quartzite, granite, metal, laminate, tile, glass composite, etc. Have you looked at the variety of granite in stone yards? I am always a little surprised when people say "I don't like granite" considering the variety of color, pattern, and finish. I had some preconceived notions about what granite looked like before I actually went to a stone yard. There are many granites I strongly dislike, but there are just as many that I absolutely drool over.

Thanks, Bill. The contractor is recommending that we apply more sealer not to all of the marble pencils, but only to the ones that remained light in color after the first application. He thinks that would make them more uniform in color. Do you still think that's a bad idea, even if we don't re-seal all of them? Something else I was wondering with regard to cleaning...My whole shower is porcelin, except for these marble pencils. If I use a product such as Scrubbing Bubbles or Lysol Bathroom Cleaner to clean the shower walls and this type of product were to get onto the marble pencil tile, will it harm the tiles in any way as long as they've been sealed? Also, do I ever need to re-apply the sealer at some point in the future, like a year or two (or three) down the road? What do you recommend? Thanks, Susan

Okay-- the water is one thing, but about that "ring"-- has it dried out yet, or is it still visible? If it IS dry, you should be fine with it, and ready to seal, once the whole thing is bone dry, and it MUST be bone dry. Once dry, you can use one of the following three: Aquamix Sealers Choice Gold Miracle 511 Impregnator Stone Tech Impregnator Pro Now, here's the thing-- all three of those sealers are top shelf sealers. They're the best you'll find on store shelves. However, one of the things that MAKES them good is that they're "breatheable", meaning that moisture can transmit back and forth thru the sealer, so that no moisture gets trapped in the stone, causing a breeding groud for mold or mildew. Bottom line-- you'll still see the stone darken when it gets wet. Don't worry about it. It'll dry out. Nothing BUT moisture willget thru, though. Any solids will be pretty much stopped by the sealer so that they don't get into the pores.

A sealer won't prevent etching though. It sounds like that is your intension with the sealer. It helps prevent staining. For protection, on my marble counter in the bathroom, I bought a couple of long ceramic trays from Pottery Barn. I use them for my tooth brushes and other items. I have a microfiber cloth nearby that I wipe the counter with after use. I have had my counter for almost a year and I can't see any etching on the honed surface. There may be some, but I don't see it in my soft light bathroom. The sealer I've used is Miracle 511 Impregnator Penetrating Sealer. It does not enhance or darken the stone.

I have recently been using Method Daily Granite Cleaner. (Well, actually I'm currently using the Method wipes because I couldn't find the liquid, but I will switch to the liquid next.) I believe it's mainly alcohol and water. You might want to search the kitchen forum as well. I think several members mix up their own cleaner.

The following are a few pH neutral hand soaps that I've found. I'm using the first one right now. I'm considering trying the second one next.

In my search for a disinfecting bathroom cleaner that is also natural stone-safe, I've come across a few products that I've been "test-driving."

1) Rubbing alcohol-water combo: I've been mixing up alcohol (70% isopropyl), water (in a 30-50% alcohol to water ratio) and a few drops of lavendar essential oil and using that on my kitchen granite, my mirrors/glass, and occasionally on my tub and tiled tub walls (porcelain and White Thassos). It's Ph neutral, and seems to work well. Not 100% sure about it removing lots of soap scum (esp in grout lines), but haven't used it enough on that as yet to form an opinion. Works great on the smooth surfaces.

2) Seventh Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner (trigger spray): Got this to try, hoping to replace my beloved Lysol Basin, Tub, and tile aerosol (which works the best on soap scum, but is NOT natural stone friendly). Too early to tell, but it does meet two of my requirements so far--disinfecting and safe on sealed natural stone.

3)Seventh Generation Disinfecting Wipes and Chlorox Wipes (w/out bleach): got them for wiping down the toilet surfaces and spot touch-ups (trying both alternately--the Chlorox wipes might leave surfaces a little streaky, but the surfaces do remain wet longer which is good for the disinfecting aspect). I also use my alcohol and water spray, but this is a bit more convenient. I know the Chlorox Wipes are safe for sealed stone according to manuf cust svce. I'm pretty sure the Seventh Gen Wipes are as well. Same igredients as the spray, I think.

Oh, we used STT SB sealer on all the stone (and grout) in both recently reno'd bathrooms. It's very easy to use (no hazing or filming), and minimal odor. Was recommended by a few guys on here GW and also over on the John Bridge Tile Forum. Time will tell how well it works (at least on our stone), but it was definitely much more user-friendly than other sealers I've used.
