Should you always get multiple bids?

We have chosen a plan - The Dogwood Ridge by Don Gardner. Apparently they (Don Gardner) can't modify it for us so we are supposed to buy the plans and have it modified locally. We were advised by an architectural firm that they would have to change so much to meet local codes and make our modifications that we might as well start from scratch and custom design a similar home. Cost will be about $10k for complete prints and engineering. House is about 3500sf including walkout basement. We really like this firm and they are very well respected in our area. We received positive references for them through a couple of sources and were told by one potential builder that $10k would be worth it for a good set of plans. We have not talked to any other architects and are wondering if we should for comparison.

We are in a similar situation with our potential builder. She comes highly recommended, has just built two homes similar to what we are building and shares our 'philosophy' regarding building a home. If everything checks out and we feel good about her and the pricing should we still have our plans bid by more than one builder?

I know the answer is most likely that multiple bids are probably best, but it does feel a little deceptive if it is just an excercise and we don't want to waste someone's time.
