Energy Efficiency - Don't Forget This!

There are a lot of products you can use in your home to make it more energy efficient but the far and away most effective strategy to save energy is often overlooked.

Most energy-efficient techniques involve improvements to the makeup of the envelope (walls, windows, roof) and the efficiency of the mechanical systems in the house - all good stuff.

But it's the overall design of the house that has the most immediate and dramatic impact on your energy use.

A two-story stand up Colonial design for example, can be made more energy efficient with a better envelope and mechanicals, but you're starting with an inherently inefficient design - a very large amount of wall surface is exposed to the elements.

Likewise with a home with lots of south-facing glass - you can make the glass repel a lot of that solar energy, but a better design would shade those windows from the sun entirely, or would locate them on a less solar-intensive elevation.

Getting to really energy-efficient homes is going to require that we rethink our long-standing love affair with the "traditional" or "neo-traditional" styled home.

Anyone have any examples of unique energy-efficient non-traditional home designs to share?
