Clarification please--anti virus programs

I have Avast (paid version), Evonsoft Computer Repair, malware byts, PC Pitstop, and PC Matic. Today, Avast stopped a trojan virus so I thought I would run couple of programs to clean things up. Is PC Matic worth paying for? Found several things, but could not repair unless I bought the program--$49.00 per year. Is it worth it?

Went thru the postings before posting here, am looking for a program that will find any more virus--or do I have enough.

OH YEs, Thank you so much for whoever posted the program about geting your pictures organized. Hubby really loves it. think it is call Piazza or something like that.

One anti-virus program per machine or you will run into problems. ie. Avast, AVG, Norton AV, McAffee etc.
You can have as many spyware programs on your computer as you want ie. Malwarebytes, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware (all free editions)just to name a few

"you could get a bad plant from so many vendors, but once I get an obvious yellow zig-zag one, I don't trust the vendor anymore." Ahh yes, the "baby and the bathwater" approach to buying roses. Unless you know for a fact that a particular rose you are buying has never, ever been grafted onto a different rootstock, then you have no guarantee that its not infected with one or more viruses. A second reasonably trustworthy scenario is if the nursery is grafting onto certified virus free rootstock and they have certified the scion variety is virus free as well. (aka VID) If you are prepared to abandon a supplier because it sold you one virused rose, then you can't trust any of them. Believe me, every rose nursery has some virused plants in their collection and they probably don't even know, since so often they show no signs of the disease! How can you fault them for that??? Many experienced rose growers prefer to ask the nurseries they buy from about the rose's provenance and whether or not the nursery knows the infection status of that variety. Most suppliers have a pretty good idea what's what. Lastly, I'll say this again: any rose that has ever been budded to a foreign rootstock is at risk of being infected with virus. That's a lot of roses, by my count.

It seems strange that the BSOD only happens at startup and shutdown, it suggests corrupt files to me. Assuming you have the W98SE CD you could run the System File Checker (sfc) to check for corrupt or missing files. Do not put the CD in the drawer unless asked. Click Start, click Run and type sfc and hit OK. Your computer will test Windows and may well ask you for guidance, this will only be in cases where the installed driver is newer than the original so you would not allow the computer to change that back. If it finds corrupt files it may/will ask for your CD. Christopher wrote I have done all the clean up and virus checks What does that mean? Can you list the task for us please? I see you have a built in Verge S# video card, the latest driver available from ECS is dated 2004/07/03, you probably have those so updating may not be needed. Try clicking Start/Control panel/System/Device manager and look down the list for yellow marks, either exclamtion or question marks. Double click on anything to bring up Properties and have a looksee. Any irregularities?

Yes, I do feel better about my computer security, but truthfully will feel a lot better when I get it all sorted out. Is it just me, or do you have to be a rocket scientist to understand SpywareBlaster? lol First of all, under Protection Status, Internet Explorer Protection, I ticked off both Active X Protection and Cookie Protection not being sure if I should do that. ie. Do I want to protect my PC from ALL Active X and ALL cookies? I just left the 'Block List' alone since SpywareBlaster has 355 items selected, and since I don't know what I want to block or not block. After doing this, Internet Explorer Protection is 'partially enabled'. I don't know if that's what I should have. I have protection enabled for Restricted Sites - that, I think I understand. Do I want to do a System Snapshot? And with the Secunia, when I downloaded it I set it to automatically update out-of-date programs. Should I have selected that option, or should I manually update out-of-date programs that it finds? To respond to your recommendations (and thank you for making them), near: 1. I do have Windows set to automatically update, so I'm good on that. I checked up update history, and the only updates it recommends at this time are 7 optional ones. I never done the optional updates. 2. I'm seeing more and more recommendations for the MSE. So it only updates and runs once a week and not daily. I guess this is sufficient? I'm not sure if I'm going to switch over my AVG for something else, but MSE is in the running. 3. Check, on the MalwareBytes. Do you usually run a full scan or a Quick Scan? I've been running the full scan mostly. 4.Check, on the SpywareBlaster (but I have the above questions on it). I still haven't downloaded the SuperAntispyware. 5. I downloaded the Secunia. 6. I haven't downloaded the WinPatrol yet. I have been wondering if AVG will have a problem with it, or vice versa. But we'll see.

Raven, in a previous thread the OP claimed that he/she was using Windows XP and that this same computer did not have Internet Explorer on it. I was unable to get clarification on this point, nor was I able to find out if this same computer has been upgraded to Service Pack 3 or if it is receiving regular Windows Updates. I suspect that it has NOT been upgraded and is NOT receiving updates. I would love to be proven wrong on all these points if only the OP would provide the info. Perhaps you can get the OP to answer. If in fact it turns out that I am correct, then Raven I humbly submit that your laudable efforts to help the OP are being ignored in whole or in part. SP3 was released over 4 years ago, and if this computer doesn't have it and the updates that followed then the OP has left it wide open to numerous security flaws. Even if I am wrong about SP3 and the updates, I am not filled with confidence when I read that the OP got rid of funmoods by saying "Actually I have no problem with Funmoods, I deleted it from my control panel when it first popped up and haven't seen it since." This says to me that either the OP really has no idea what he/she is doing, or that the OP is totally unable/unwilling to communicate what he/she did do. I will read with interest how this comedy of errors continues to play out. I think the OP needs to do much more than just ask for help over the Internet. I would get rid of the PC Matic.
I would definitely have and use malwarebytes, superantispyware, spywareblaster.
If you need links to any of those please ask here instead of trying to find them there are some fakes that sound alike.
Avast is fine for your Antivirus

I am sorry, I do realize that I can only use one anti virus program, guess I meant I am looking for a good spyware program. My fingers are faster than my brain. Should I get rid of PC Pitstop etc. ?

If you are paying for it, dont renew. Download, install, update Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Spywareblaster (all free editions) Malware and Superanti complement each other. What one wont find, the other will. Spywareblaster runs in the background and stops nasties from initially loading. You must update Spywareblaster on a weekly basis to get the new signatures. Malware/Superanti must only be updated before using them ie every couple of weeks

I have used the free PC Pitstop for years. It was a great program but a succession of "improvements" seem to have removed a lot of the advantages in my opinion. While buying computer parts I was offered the $39 program for free and took it, based on what I felt it did I would not be paying money for it. PC Matic seems to belong to PC Pistop.

Never heard of Evensoft till your post. Cnet has offered this (amongst hordes of other sites of course) and in 14 months has had a mere 17,527 downloads with user rating 3 out of 5. Hardly a hit in my mind. It also cleans the registry which you should not be doing, registry cleaners are bad business unless the person knows what they are doing.

How to download and install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware application for Windows computers do the FULL scans rather than the quick one, update and run scan weekly

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
update and run scan weekly or so

SpywareBlaster
no scans to do just open program weekly hit the update button get updates then hit the enable all protection button to turn the shield green, close.

add WOT to your browsers get the version for which ever browser you are using.
