I am having problems with FF and found this thread - I am completely out of the news loop so had heard nothing about Java problems so...hope you can help. I have a mac running 10.6.8. In the middle of watching netflix last night I got an error message saying that Java plug in was disabled and to enable it and restart FF. I checked everything and it was enabled, I disabled my ghostery, etc. Nothing made a difference. Today I tried an update to java and downloaded that (found by check for updates on my mac menu). still didn't fix it. So I found this thread and decided I would uninstall the whole thing. I found directions on FF about how to uninststall Java. But when I seach my mac for JavaAppletPlugin.plugin I get nothing, nowhere. If I just search for Java, I get dozens of hits, but none of them for the applet plugin. I went back and disabled it, but am wondering what to do now. How can I uninstall it if I can't find it? Oracle, the developer of the Java programming language, released Java 6 Release 24 (Java 1.6.0_24) in February 2011 to remedy 21 vulnerabilities As part of this security release, it appears that the ability to copy & paste from a computer's clipboard into a Java environment has been deemed a security threat, and therefore disabled. it will redirect you and will take you to one of the sites that is auto installing the various versions of antivirus xp 2008/2009 or what ever they happen to be naming them, which are carrying many types of infections with it. This has gotten so prevalent now that the bad guys have discovered this method of taking over websites that everyone is trying to put out warnings to the community to try to make people aware if they see this suddenly happening to them NOT to click on any of the redirected pages, Not to buy any of the fake programs, but instead to immediately close out all instances of the browser, in some cases that will flush the urls out of the clipboard but not always in some it takes a reboot of the pc to clear the urls from the clipboard from what I have read. The best thing you can do is be very careful where you surf and where you click. If you use firefox you can use the no script add-on set as shown. The forums have been seeing many many cases of these exploits and several got them from very legit websites that had been hacked and a redirect put on the site. gillian don't panic about it but it is something we all need to be very aware of since it has been so on the increase. Hopefully adobe and the browsers can get some method out to help with this soon. It is better to be aware of this kind of thing so we know to come for help asap if we know we have been exposed to one of the redirects. If you see anything pop up saying it is scanning your pc and that you have infections or anything like that do NOT click anywhere on the page, close the browser or just go to start and reboot it. From what I have read the earlier versions of firefox are also affected. Also it is a good idea to go to your pc to your adobe and check for updates. You can also use the secunia inspector to see if it shows you have out of date programs. Updates should hopefully come out soon. The Secunia Online Software Inspector I just wanted to post so y'all would be aware of this stuff, don't freak out, just be alert. Always better to be prepared and educated than caught off guard.

javara is a very legit and safe program we have used and recommended it for years on the help forums. the old ones can be removed manually but using javara just makes it easy and gets some that you may miss manually. any versions you show other than the latest version can be removed. Java has recently added a feature that is supposed to remove the old version it is replacing but they never put out anything that would remove the versions prior to that so it is not surprising to see some very old versions still listed on older pcs. How I would proceed, do the update from the java icon on the pc, that should provide you with 7-7, then run javara and let it remove all other versions it finds.

Like so many other users I found Java unnecessary for my doings. If you do not use it leave Java off. There's way too much happening with it. When a purveyor skips a whole version, and releases an upgrade a month early it is not too reassuring.

I personally have the current version downloaded and stored if a need surprisingly arises.

I installed win8 Dec 14th. I have never installed java. Apparently I haven't missed it in almost 3 months.

I never had it on my new pc and a while back removed it from all of mine, and don't miss it. So much easier not to have to deal with it.

When I tried to run Secunia (linked by Raven in Ellie's post about having a second computer) it wouldn 't run without Java. Tried it a while ago, too, and couldn't but not sure why at that time.

How do I run Secunia without Java?

Almost forgot, XP SP3 FF.

You can't run the online version as far as I know without Java installed. Java Runtime is one of the requirements for Secunia on line scanner.

You can run the downloaded version, I just did and I don't have Java installed.

I need some advice. I uninstalled Java from my PC when the recent separate post came through about possible problems and thought I'd taken care of any potential trouble.

Today, I did a search on my pc for Java and came up with many java folders...also files showing "scripts" (I'm not sure I know what I'm talking about here ).

I tried running the Secunia scan online and got a message that I may be having trouble loading the java aplet and also went to the java site and clicked to see if I have java installed and it said they were "unable to determine" if I did. So I'm guessing I must not have it installed. I downloaded Secunia and did a scan that showed everything updated but it did show a program called JavaRa even though I don't see that on my "uninstall or change a program" list. Do I need to be concerned about JavaRa? Could the above referenced folders be connected with it? Do I need to be concerned about that? I'm thanking you in advance.

JavaRa runs from the desktop. So you would not see it in the uninstall list. If you see it on the desktop you can right click it and choose delete. It might be in a folder on the desktop with a zipper on it...

I signed up for Adrive a few years ago to upload files while having computer issues. I have since brought them back to the computer. I tried to use it recently and it requires Java.

Guess I should not use it anymore?

Many, many users have continued to use Java in these past months without incident. If you have a particular use and a particular site that requires it, I'd use it and not give it another thought. If you want to be uber-careful, enable Java when you're on the site and then disable it when you're done.

I have a few things I do that require Java and I've continued to use it. I've experienced no problems.

For storage, you always have the alternative of buying your own external device. They're cheap and and easy to use.

breenthumb just to clarify javara is not part of java, it's a program that helps un install old java versions, you probably used it at some point to do that.

Hi everyone, just thought I would poke my head in here and low and behold saw this post and I got that virus. I hope I can get rid of it. I heard about java on the news and did not think it would affect me but it did. Hopefully my kaspersky got rid of it. I ran windows defender afterwards and it didn't find anything and will run the virus scan again tonight but this is the trojan I got.

Thanks, Raven. Just wish they didn't all sound so much alike, but now I know what Javara and Javascript are. Hope I can remember when I need to know. :)
