36 inch gas range

We're remodeling our kitchen and just went to look at stove tops and ranges. We're supposed to get a 36" gas stove top and a 30" electric oven under it. I don't mind having one oven because I don't bake that much. However, I really want 5 burners. At the appliance store, the salesman warned me that the oven will sit lower than a regular range. He had one set up, and I did find it rather uncomfortable. He suggested a 36" range instead, but warned that they are significantly more expensive than separate units. Does anyone have a 36" gas or dual fuel range? Which brands are good?

If you need 5 burners, presumably because you will be using them all simultaneously, you should give careful thought to the range hood/exhaust system you will need. Search this forum for useful information on the topic.

Also be forewarned that 36" range ovens can have very long preheat times because of the enormous oven cavities, especially, it seems, on the all-gas models. I have a Wolf 36" all-gas range; its oven takes about 35 minutes to preheat to a stable temp and I don't think this is unusual for any brand's 36" gas range. If you go with dual-fuel, the electric oven may preheat more quickly - I am not sure on this. However, dual-fuel is even more pricey.

Have you looked at DCS 30" ranges? I just bought one for our beach condo; it has a 5-burner top and large 30" oven cavity. I believe Capital makes a 5-burner 30" model as well.

I'm not a professional cook but I use the range every day and entertain and I'm looking for a good 36-inch range in the $3,000 - $3,500 range. I'm considering NXR, Thor, Bertazzoni and Verona. Things that are important to me: even broiling, easy to clean, easy to use, reliability. Any advice?

I've never heard of NXR so no idea if they are good or not. It appears to me to be a pro style look-a-like rather than anything actually approaching pro style. Perhaps what is critical is not what kind of cook you are now, but what you want to be or expect to be. If cooking and learning to cook is important then it may be worth your while to consider something better than this. Personally I'd look for open instead of sealed burners, at least one higher heat burner (22+k instead of 18k), a thermostatic griddle in place of two of the burners, a good simmer burner, very even heat in the oven, etc. A Bluestar RNB or similar but from a budget standpoint maybe find a used or demo unit? Or maybe a used Wolf like we currently have from before they switched to sealed burners? Also, you'll want a 42" hood, not the 36" recommended.

Wolf oven have a problem with enamel chipping- this is true for people who never use the self cleaning feature and definitely for people who do use the feature. You should thoroughly research Wolf ranges and blue enamel here and on Chowhound before considering that brand's ovens.

Went to look today at each store and each told me Wolf is more reliable than Thermador. i like the burners low simmer on the Wolf. Bluestar isnt sold locally and i want it professionally installed by the seller. I wanted to look at the Cafe line but salesperson could not give me any idea of when it would come in i exposed the two burners on my vikings oven, one is working the other is not working and had some fallen burnt insulation on it The metal plate under the oven floor had holes and looked like flames had blasted it.. So obviously i cant use the oven. So i guess i will order the Wolf tomorrow. since its in stock and just hope its reliable and works like its supposed to!
