MSE installation

I have been trying to help a friend install Micr. Sec. Essentials (via the telephone )He said he is using XP, when he starts his PC that is what shows on the welcome screen, but when he attempts the install he gets the message that MSE is not compatible with Windows 32. Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

I had him download the program to his desktop and then attempt to install it from there. As he had to run the Norton Removal tool before installation of MSE.

Azinoh "Maybe we had different download sites?" That's possible. I downloaded directly from www.avast.com. If you did not, who knows what you actually downloaded. Could possibly have something to do with your very slow download also. ========================== Sunday 04-13: My version is 2014.9.0.2013 and now there is a new; 2014.9.0.2016. Well updating from the interface update just didn't seem to go so I went to the Avast.com site to download the dot.exe file. Clicking on download takes you to CNET. I now realize my original download was therefore thru CNET. So much for getting Avast from Avast. From Google it would seem cnet hasn't got the best of reputations any more in fact lots of complaints about extra programs foisted off on ya. Guess so. I went to File Hippo for the 84.55M file. Then googled that and there seems to be problems with the 2014.9.0.2016 version. So I'll skip it for now. Maybe let it age a bit. FH seems to have a good rep but most mssgs I found about them were several years old.

Correct. Here is my speech for running 2 anti virus, I keep this in notepad because i use it so often, and just paste it in when required... The real-time protection of two antivirus programs may conflict with each other and cause the following: * False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't. * Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time. * Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may even crash or blue screen. * Less protection: Two antivirus trying to scan the same file may interfere with the process and allow a malicious file onto the computer without notice to you.

Hi maybe, No, No, I would strongly suggest uninstalling AVG completely using a special link that I have and can provide for you if you decide to do it. Part of installing errors / problems with MSE can and do result if there are other security programs on the computer. I'd like to see you get MSE back that's what you had and you're use to it. The process includes this: First you download MSE to the desktop, that is the setup file like every program has. Once the set up file is on the desktop you would run the AVG unistaller that I would provide a link for. Once Avg is removed by the special installer you then go back to the MSE set up file you downloaded Earlier and double click it to install it. If you decide to work on this I have time, I would like to see a hijackthis log first before we start. I would provide those instructions and all other instructions to successfully do this for you.

LOL, I know THAT kind of bungalow. The problem seems to have corrected itself. The red shield is no longer there. I wonder if takes until the next scheduled scan, or something, until they are in sync. I'll try to pay close attention next time. nearandwest, I'm not sure when I last ran a full scan. Maybe I'll do that tonight.

I think your friends computer is infected with malware.

have them install malwarebytes update it and run a full scan to see if there is anything on it that may be preventing the AV install, some malware will do that so lets check to be sure

since it seems he is not really sure about what is on his pc he could do a belarc which will give him all the info

Thank you so much! I don't know why the possibility of malware didn't occur to me.
When He finally gets MSE installed, he will need a firewall. Which of the free ones is the easiest to install and deal with, as far as updates etc. I have Win.7 so have no first hand knowledge.

Pamies Windows 7 has a good firewall already so none other is needed. I have had the beta then final version of Win7 running close to 2 years now with that firewall, plus I have had MSE since the day it was released and have had no issues whatsoever.

A couple of times MSE has warned me that something is amiss with updates but a quick manual update takes place and we are good to go again.

I am well aware that Windows 7 does not need a firewall. I have been using W7. with MSE for a year and Vista with MSE before that. It has been problem free!

My friend, referenced in my original post has XP, so he will need a firewall in addition to MSE ( if we ever get it installed)

Hmm, sorry, I was going by your 6.07 post today that said I have Win.7 so have no first hand knowledge.

zone alarm free is ok but make sure none of the added junk is installed with it
