MSE installation

I have been trying to help a friend install Micr. Sec. Essentials (via the telephone )He said he is using XP, when he starts his PC that is what shows on the welcome screen, but when he attempts the install he gets the message that MSE is not compatible with Windows 32. Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

I had him download the program to his desktop and then attempt to install it from there. As he had to run the Norton Removal tool before installation of MSE.

Correct. Here is my speech for running 2 anti virus, I keep this in notepad because i use it so often, and just paste it in when required... The real-time protection of two antivirus programs may conflict with each other and cause the following: * False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't. * Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time. * Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may even crash or blue screen. * Less protection: Two antivirus trying to scan the same file may interfere with the process and allow a malicious file onto the computer without notice to you.

What version of MSE ? search 'manually uninstall security essentials. You need to try to remove it as properly as possible it if you install another anti-virus brand for sure. Think I would just remove MSE then reinstall it. BUT... it sounds like you both have some identical problem with it not showing up in both add/remove's. Often times a virus will disable your anti-virus program, SCan Scan SCAN!!!! or it maybe is another program you have installed conflicts. Have you looked around in Event Viewer .. it may tell you the problem.

When you try to open Microsoft Security Essentials and you got the message âÂÂWindows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.â then your computer is probably infected with the ZeroAccess rootkit. The new variants of this rootkit will alters the junction points for Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender. Causing either program not to be able to be accessed, reinstalled or uninstalled. The ZeroAccess rootkit is a dangerous threat that has been circulating for several years. SophosLabs has recently seen the number of machines infected with Zero Access increase sharply as there has been a proliferation of samples appearing in the wild. You need or should to go to a Malware removal forum, where log files can be looked at, or take it in for repair, or return it to factory defaults. I would suggest you Google Zero Access rootkit. Just to become familiar with it . This is also know as a back door Trojan. You might want to Google Backdoor Trojan. The link I have provided shows how to remove it, but you will never understand the log files that get generated or find then difficult to understand, that's why I suggest getting help at a forum. Restart the computer gets it running ?? fwiw; I had that problem happening frequently. On my win8.1 - it was a recent new version 7 of EaseUs Todo back up program was the cause. I finally uninstalled easeus. Havent had windows defender freeze since. Which is what MSE is called on win8 . Experiment with pausing ease us ? or if you don't have that, program, maybe try uninstalling MSE and after a restart, re-install it. MSE has a timer on it,, if it stops, its supposed to try to restart in 60 seconds, maybe after 3 tries it gives up until you restart the computer.

have them install malwarebytes update it and run a full scan to see if there is anything on it that may be preventing the AV install, some malware will do that so lets check to be sure

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Win) - Detecting and Removing Malware

since it seems he is not really sure about what is on his pc he could do a belarc which will give him all the info

Thank you so much! I don't know why the possibility of malware didn't occur to me.
When He finally gets MSE installed, he will need a firewall. Which of the free ones is the easiest to install and deal with, as far as updates etc. I have Win.7 so have no first hand knowledge.

Pamies Windows 7 has a good firewall already so none other is needed. I have had the beta then final version of Win7 running close to 2 years now with that firewall, plus I have had MSE since the day it was released and have had no issues whatsoever.

A couple of times MSE has warned me that something is amiss with updates but a quick manual update takes place and we are good to go again.

Owbist,
I am well aware that Windows 7 does not need a firewall. I have been using W7. with MSE for a year and Vista with MSE before that. It has been problem free!

My friend, referenced in my original post has XP, so he will need a firewall in addition to MSE ( if we ever get it installed)
