Questions about whole house ventilator fan and attic insulation
Comments (7)If you use a whole house fan, there is no point in having a sealed attic system. You need an old fashioned "open" attic system. You want the hot air to vent out through the gable ends. You have a grate in a hallway that opens and the (presumably) cooler air from outside the home is drawn in through the open windows through the home, through the grate, and exits through the attic vents. WHole house fans are NOT compatible with conjunctively using your AC system. And, as I mentioned, the exterior of the home must be cooler (and less humid) than the interior for the whole house fan to be a viable option. 85° is pretty hot for most people, and I presume you're in the South where the humidity is also very high. Southerners LOVE their AC for a reason and long ago abandoned their whole house fans except for about 15 days in the spring and fall. WHole house fans are like owning a convertable. It sounds like a good idea, and if you live in a place like San Francisco, it probably IS a good idea. But, for folks who live in most of the rest of the country, there just isn't enough ideal weather in the year to be able to fully utilize that top down motoring....See MoreWhole House Fan with NO attic.
Comments (2)Depends what he is trying to do. HRV is great for ventilation while maintaining heat (and sometimes humidity). However, if he's trying to provide a draft as an alternative to air conditioning in warm weather, an HRV won't do anything for him. There's no reason why a whole house fan wouldn't work without an attic. It actually is easier as you won't need the separate operating louvers to get from the living space to where the fan is....See MoreWhole house fan in home next to freeway?
Comments (1)I'll give this a shot although I am no expert with whole house fans. If you set the fan to blow air into the house you will be pulling in humidity, noise & exhaust fumes into the space you live in/ If the windows are unopened when you turn this fan on this will create a positive pressure on your home that far exceeds the positive pressure we design for in a healthy home. If you set the fan to remove air from the house with windows closed the effect will be a negative pressure with make up air entering through any unsealed holes in your home. This would not be a good thing either. If you set the fan to remove air with windows open (which is the way the one house I lived in as a kid with whole house fan) it is comfortable when temps are mild and negative pressure is not an issue as makeup air is entering through the larger unsealed holes..in this case your open windows. The down side again is the amount of humidity that will enter your home. La. isn't much like Hawaii (unfortunately for me...) but humidity is a big issue here. Adding more humidity to your home on these mild days will add to the humdity load that the air conditioning will have to remove. I don't know of any way offhand to insulate a whole house fan for noise..and I wonder what the insulation value on one of these fans would be in relation to the rest of the insulated wall.... I'll turn it over to the pros now... Best of luck & aloha!...See MoreWindow fan or whole house fan visible to interior?
