Identity Theft/E-mail question

Recently someone has stolen my identity after my purse got stolen last August. They have opened up many credit cards on-line and I discovered that the e-mail address they are using is my lastname,firstname at yahoo.com. My dh called the police detective to pass this on. Is there anything I personally can do about this? I talked to Yahoo a bit ago and they said to report it on-line on the abuse link. I'm really hoping that they can get a lead from this, but it may be wishful thinking. It is so tempting to e-mail them, but I am going to resist that urge.

Any thoughts, ideas, answers would be very appreciated.

if they reply.. give the ip address they replied from to the police.

I assume you are actively dealing with the identity theft because it can cause many long-term problems. A while back a friend passed on some useful information concerning what to do in case of loss of a wallet or purse. I'm sure you have done all this, but I thought I'd post it to help others who are in the same situation:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE YOUR PURSE OR WALLET

We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed using your name, address, SS#, credit, etc. Unfortunately I (the author of this piece) have firsthand knowledge, because my wallet was stolen last month and within a week the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more.

But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know. As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately, but the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know who to call. Keep those where you can find them easily (having to hunt for them is additional stress you WON'T need at that point!).

File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where it was stolen, this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important: call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS#. This will help prevent identity theft, which can be a much bigger headache than all of the other stuff combined. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

By the time I was advised to do this - almost 2 weeks after the theft all the damage had been done (there are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert). Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them in their tracks. The numbers are:

Oh Howard, you could never get my nose out of joint! Ha ha! Well, maybe if you smacked me w/a bat! Good thing you live far from me!! Your 1st plant looks within the range for E. purpusorum. 2nd, yes a cultivar/hybrid of E. p.~ I've not seen. Last one, E. pulidonis (no 'v') does look similar, like it could be in the mix. Neat-O that your E. pulidonis has the "raindrops" develop on it!! I selected E. purpusorum as one parent because of the look of xGraptoveria 'Amethorum', which has E. purpusorum & Graptopetalum amethystinum as parents, retaining the ridge on the back (underside) of the leaf from E. purpusorum. Julie's plant is retaining the pointed tips as well. I believe the other parent would have to be a light-colored one & have the red flowers. If her plant had a definite red edge, I might lean toward the E. pulidonis as a parent. Still, need to find some red-flowered guys.

mike kaiser, A hacker can start an https session to break into a gmail account just as easily as not. I don't think it provides any security against hackers, it just prevents interception (by using encryption) when the session is on a non-secure network. For people on a secure/home network, no effect. I'm not certain and the preceding could be wrong. It's a good practice anyhow to have nothing in your email account that you wouldn't want in the hands of someone with bad intentions. That way, there's no reason to have anxiety about unauthorized access. You change your password, or in more serious cases, you set up a new email address, and move on with your life. People get so dramatic and fearful about such things, an email break-in isn't like a home invasion by a gang of 5 lawless bikers.

I wanted to share a couple other ways your identy/money can be stolen. Both happened to me. By the way, I'm really sorry you've gone through this. It is so frustrating. It seems like the majority of id theft is from credit cards. This first one happened years ago, when this was a relatively new crime, but it wasn't credit. Someone took my name and driver's licence number and the account number of a closed checking account. Then they created a new account and went shopping, at Sears, Macy's, Home Depot, and Victoria's Secret. All in one day. They almost got cought at VS, which ended their shopping spree. I believe they got over $3,000 in merchandise. It was a NIGHTMARE trying to convince all the different agencies and stores that I wasnt the thief. I didn't lose any money, but my driver's license number is still flagged with telecheck. Sixteen years later. BTW, after I made contact with Macy's to explain the situation, Macy's started billing me for the $900 purchase. We had a pretty heated conversation about how they wouldn't even have my information if I hadn't called them to do the right thing. The other was just a couple years ago. I was going over my bank statement and saw a payment to a cell phone company that we don't use. I checked a few monthes prior and noticed I had been paying someone elses bills. Cell phone and the utility bills. The utility bill was easy to miss because I use the same company. It was the cell bill that tipped me off. Someone used the account and routing number off a check one of us wrote and was paying her bills online. Once I cought it, I called the bank PG&E, and Verizon and had everything taken care of. The utility companies went after her on their own, so I don't know the outcome. There was a name on the accounts, but I was told it was probably fake. So anyway, these are just a couple more areasto consider and keep an eye on. Also, Sears can be kinda shifty. I would still be a little suspicious of them. I would not put it past them to issue you an unsolicited credit card. On the off chance that you accept it. It doesn't make much sense for a credit thief to have the card sent to your house. fwiw; I have some lady named Catherine with my same last name that has lived in my house and shares my credit history for probably over 10 years.. and I cant get rid of her. Car insurance is a challenge at times as they want to know if there is any way she might drive one of the cars .. so she must have bad drivers history. I told the last car insurance guy she didn't live there.. and I didn't know who she is, its an error on your computer systems. He sort of laughed and told me she had to be on the policy if she lives here - I said she must live in the bushes and only comes around while I'm sleeping... I've never seen her in my life, no way has she ever or ever will drive one of the cars - he thought I was joking. He had to phone his headquarters before he could price up my insurance. Car insurance comes up for renewal .. go through the same thing again, and again. I have had credit cards mailed here in her name, doctors office call to confirm her appointments, bills from doctors in my mailbox, bill collector for the doctors offices, pharmacy guys asking if I was picking up her meds too. I tell everybody she's some kind of phony. It doesn't matter,,, she is painful to me, .. doesn't seem to be any ways to be rid of her. I don't think the credit guard services can do anything to stop the people out there like this lady.
