New Acer Netbook ?

I'm sure Ravencajun will chime in on this post (Knowing she has a newer Acer netbook), but help from anyone here would be appreciated.

I just got the netbook (Running XP) yesterday and have spent half the morning setting it up and removing McAfee and Google toolbar and running McAfee removal tool and CCleaner. Then I have installed Avant, then My Verizon broadband and it is now installing MS updates.

Just a couple questions; What is this "Google Desktop"? I clicked on it to remove and got a warning so backed out. The games installed: I did notice they are all in the programs listed separately, are they trial verisons or full programs and why no Solitaire? Also, is there a safe site where I can download Solitaire? That is the one game I would like installed to help teach my husband mouse and touch pad control because he is new to computers.

I like newegg but will not purchase a pc from them because of their no refund policy, they will only replace, I had a choice of them and walmart on 2 different computers I have bought and got both from walmart for their super return policy, can take it right to any store. So be aware of the policy at where ever you do buy. i do buy most of my memory from newegg and other parts. Acer Aspire 11.6" Netbook with Intel Atom Processor, 6 Cell Battery and Windows XP you can select any color you want there. it has usb ports you can use usb mouse or keyboard I use a usb wireless mouse with mine but you can use a usb corded version. there is not a ps2 port. it does have one vga video port. my biggest complaint on mine and this seems to be pretty consistent with most netbooks is how weak the speakers are, I have hearing issues and on some things I can barely hear it, if there is any noise in the room I can not hear it but carrying a little set of earbuds that I can plug in fixes that problem or connecting to stand alone speakers or a head set.

all you need to make sure of is that it is a usb plug in, that it will read and BURN DVD's if it does it will most likely also do various other things including CDs. They are not very expensive, I picked one up on clearance at Staples for under $20. There are many out there that are only players not burners since you will want to use it to make your discs you need one that also burns. use this search string on google to find lots of results usb external cd dvd rw burner drive for laptop netbook some will require an ac adapter some not, for the most portable you want one that does not, some will require use of 2 usb ports to help power it, if it will be mostly used at home getting one that has both options would be best so you can plug it into power when you are home and use only usb power when traveling. If you have windows 7 starter on your netbook be aware you do not have a media player on that OS you will need to download and install a media player, I like VLC free. In general it is simply plug and play that easy plug in the usb cord and start using it. the x in the number such as 8x or 6x or 12x is the speed it will write to DVD or CD. the bigger the faster not really that important unless you will be doing a lot of burning. You may run into some that also use blu ray format which means they will play and or burn to blu ray discs and will be much more expensive. I am sure you are smarter than I am about computers- nobody could be less knowlegable. Anyway, I have had nothing but trouble with the Acer company itself- I had to send my lap back 3 times- all for the original problem. They lost my lap for about a month- said that unless I could give them the tracker number they could not help- well THEY are the ones who issued the Fedex label, so they had the tracker number themselves. I would love a small lap like that, but will absolutely stay away from Acer.

I do have Solitaire on my acer netbook under games, I got the 123 free solitaire for my windows 7 and I also use one that is online.
I am sure you meant AVAST for your antivirus program?
I would also go ahead and add spywareblaster, malwarebytes, and if you want superantispyware, update weekly and do the scans, for spywareblaster you only update it then hit the enable all protection.

What are you using for a firewall?

for your games you might want to give this a try.
Go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, then
click the Add/Remove Windows Components in the left panel. With Accessories
highlighted, click the Details button. On the next screen, highlight Games
and again click the Details button. You can add or remove check marks from
the boxes there on the various system games, then OK your way out and
Windows XP will install/remove whatever your selections are.

Ravencajun, Yes I did mean Avast! Prior to taking delivery of the netbook I downloaded alot of programs on my desktop computer and put them on a thumb drive. I do have all of the programs you mentioned plus ZoneAlarm. I did go ahead and remove the Google Desktop as I found no need for it after I did some research about it. I think I will also go ahead and remove all the games because they seem to be "trial" verions from what I can find out. Do you perfer to remove them like you suggested or by the "uninstall" each game has in the Acer Games program list?

I haven't done it yet, but I will go download the 123-Solitaire game as you and genes suggested. I just don't trust most free downloads unless they are recommended by people like you and Genes, along with others on the forum.

This forum has been my learning tool and a constant source of information for many years now and is soooo appreciated!!

mine did not have any trial games just the regular games that come with windows xp so I did not have to deal with that, in the past my HP's did come with game trials and I got rid of them I don't need or use them. If it seems to do a good uninstall then sure that is fine to use their uninstall, just another option in case that is where your solitaire is lurking and has not been checked to be included.

RC, It looks like neither uninstall does a very good job. I tried it both ways and the games are still listed in the Acer Games. If you click on the games name it tells you the program does not exist. I was able to right click on the name and delete it, but I didn't do all of them. Instead I ran CCleaner and they are still there! Now I'm wondering if I need to get rid of Acer Games all together to get rid of everything. what do you think?

Also, the "touch pad" is so sensitive that just touching a link or program sometimes opens it without clicking at all. I have tried to adjust the touch pad via its interface, but I can't find anything there to change this. I haven't tried using a mouse yet and there will be times when we can't so we need to get use to the touch pad.

BTW, I downloaded the 123-Solitaire and its just what I was looking for. Thanks again to both you and genes!

I do not like the touchpad and instead use only a little wireless usb mouse, I have hand problems so using the touchpad was just not a good option for me, I just keep it disabled.

You may want to try the free REVO uninstaller for the games, I do not have them so I don't really know what they are, but REVO does an excellent job.
Are they by any chance Wild Tangent games? If so you should find that in add remove programs.

RC, No Soliaire is not listed in the games at all. Just a bunch of games I've never heard of. I don't have the netbook on right now so I can't tell you exactly what they are. I thought about trying Revo and see if that works. I'll do that later so thanks for the link.

In regards to the touch pad; I did alot of research about the problem and others seem to have the same thing going on. I applied a couple of the suggestions and it seems to be better, but I haven't done alot on it since the changes to really tell.

Just incase others need/want to know: Go to the control page, then to mouse. Click on the mouse icon and there is a tab at the top for the touch pad. There you will find "Devise Settings" and then "settings". Click "Tapping" and remove the check from the box labled "Enable Tapping". For the sensitivity: Going the same route, look for "poperties" and expand to find "Sensitivity". Click on "Touch Sensitivity" and move the slider towards the "Heavy Touch". Make sure you have clicked "OK" after each change. FYI: This instructions are for the "classic view" in XP.

I personally do not like using the touch pad and on the netbook it is so small its even more difficult. Its just necessary because of not always being able to use a mouse. Believe me I will be getting a mouse to use when we can!! I love my Logitech mouse I have for my laptop and that is what I will be getting :o)
