Extra Hardie Board siding

Hi! I have a question for you all. Our builder bought too much Hardie Board siding (Boothbay blue), and he's not sure what to do with all the extra. I told him that maybe he could sell it, but I know that something like Ebay probably wouldn't be good, since it should probably be sold locally so shipping won't be prohibitive. Any thoughts on what he can do with this, besides just trashing it?

I just ordered 180 pieces of Boothbay blue for my garage in Minnesota. Too bad yours is too late, too far away for me. Nice siding though! :)

There is an exterior siding stain identification guide to help identify stains in some cases and the cause of it. Brown Stains – Long streaks of brown stains on exterior siding are often the result of rusty nails. However, if the home is old and has cedar wood siding, brown staining also might be oil residue from the cedar wood caused by water getting under the shingles. If it’s a reddish brown stain, it could be the end result of an ice dam over the winter season. Black Stains – Black stains are usually caused by a form of algae, mold, or another type of fungus. It’s often found on the side of the house that doesn’t get much sun to dry moisture from wet weather. However, black staining also could be a result of soot, particularly for homes near industrial areas where wood-fired or oil-fired chimneys are in use. Green Stains – Green stains on exterior siding stem from algae or moss growth. It tends to grow on the siding where the right mix of sun and moisture exists and there is inadequate ventilation. Yellow Stains – Yellow stains on siding are commonly caused by deteriorating insulation or sheathing behind the siding. Water Stains – Water streaks or stains in the same color as your siding are caused by gutter problems. If the gutters on your home haven’t been inspected lately or are old, they could be out of alignment and be causing rainwater to flow behind them or the siding.

Do you happen to know wold be the technique to replace only a few boards without having to pull the entire wall of siding down? Yes, I do it all the time. Think about how they are installed, then think about how to undo. Here is a tool that helps with removing the hard to get to nails. https://www.google.com/search?q=B215H%20Hook%20Flat%20Bar I almost always use a few face nails. Some 18 gauge with tiny heads, some larger with full heads. All shot with pneumatic nailers. You have the older style square edge boards and they may no longer be available. JH has changed to a rounded edge and will need to be installed in a specific orientation.

LP smooth sharp edge siding Are you referring to the 38 Series smooth finish siding? I've never heard of "sharp edge". I have installed a good bit of Hardie and the LP siding (including the smooth) and prefer the LP. LP switched the smooth from a fiber substrate which I never recommended, to a strand substrate which is far better. All siding needs to be installed correctly, but I have found the LP products far more tolerant of install errors than Hardie.

I second the donation idea, but if that is not practical, try Craigslist in your area.

Thank you; I will try Craigslist. I don't know that the builder wants to give it away, though Habitat for Humanity was the first thing that came to my mind. I'll point out that it's a tax deduction :)

We don't need anything extra like a shed, etc., so were just stumped as to a good way to dispose of the siding.

I'm a bit confused. If he purchased it for your home on a fixed price that means he estimated the costs and included those in your home price. I would think that means you paid for it and it is yours to donate or do whatever with.

You could also advertise it in the classified ads of your local paper. Most will have a section for building supplies. You might not get top price for it, but even if you gave it away it would be better than wasting it. Since it's advertised locally, you could require the buyer to come pick it up.
You can do that on ebay, too, and buyers can search by "distance first" to find things within driving distance. I do that all the time when I'm shopping on ebay for larger items.
I don't suppose it's possible to return it to where you bought it from?
