Poorly transcribed books into Kindle form.

Can anyone tell me how a previously published book is converted into Kindle format? I am annoyed, along with numerous others who post their complaints, that a large number of Kindle editions are riddled with typos and very odd switches in formatting. Is the process difficult or very time consuming? I am already irritated that most of the Kindle books that appeal to me are around $10 or more because I can easily read 10 books each month. I love using an ereader but find it a rather expensive luxury when I can buy almost any book that interests me as a used book. Postage is only $3.99 and often I can find a desired used book for a penny! I was probably naive to think that so many Kindle books would sell that the price would be cheaper. I do understand that thousands of titles are available for free, but I have already read classics for decades and my current interest is in modern fiction.
