worm/virus help please...

Hi,

1st time post here, usually on the decorating/garden forums. This morning I recvd a pop up from symantec stating that a virus was detected. Here are the details:

file c:\windows/system32\vpnsvc.exe

location c:\windows\system32

name w32.spybot.worm

action taken: clean, failed; quarantine, failed.

I did a search and an app file vpnsvc.exe came up, should I delete this? Any suggestions on how to get rid of this is appreciated. Thx

One thing you can do now is run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
click Start/Run/ type> MRT and do a scan.
Win32/Spybot is listed as one that will be removed.

Yes, you can delete that file if it will let you.
Sometimes worms are set to reinstall from the registry and return.
You may have to turn off system restore and run your symantec scan in safe-mode.

I did the MRT results were: malware, backdoor:win32/Rbot.gen detected not removed.Can't remove by MRT run full scan thru anti virus (symantec, did this again, still can't be quarantined/cleaned. Don't know what else to do...

Viruses, mineral deficiency, and PH problems can be hard to pinpoint. If you don't have that plant planted in brand new fresh soil where you are confident that the PH is 7.0 that would be the first place to start. Lowes/home depot and may garden centers sell for under $10 a PH meter . Green box meter head and a long metal rod that extends from it. Take a damp soil meter reading. If the PH is not 7.0 you could be looking at mineral deficiencies in your plant caused by its inability to absorb them due to the PH imbalance. You can always adjust the PH by adding garden lime or sulfur. If this is just one potted plant you are dealing with. Go buy new soil and repot....if you start to see this occurring in several plants check you PH levels...the $10 investment in a PH reader can save you hundreds of hours of dread and many days of disappointment.

Look it is some sort of hidden folder. THIS IS JUST INFORMATION DO NOT FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTION HERE "You will not be able to see the Content.IE5 folder associated with your account in Windows Explorer. There are two ways to access the folder. 1. Open your TIF folder, (TIF TEMPORY INTERNET FILES) C:\Documents and Settings\YOURACCOUNT\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. Next, click in the Address bar at the top of the window so that the address is highlighted. Hit the right arrow key to place the cursor at the end of the folder path. Type \Content.IE5 in the address bar and hit Enter. You should now see the contents of that folder. 2. Go to Start -> Run and enter the folder path to Content.IE5 in the Open box. Autocomplete should help you by presenting options you can select using the down arrow. Add a backslash after you select a folder. Don't worry about this folder I found this info from a google search..

If your anti virus is up to date and running perhaps you do not have a virus but perhaps a Trojan. Windows Live Onecare is a for fee program so presumably fully automatic. What safety programs are you running bsides the anti virus? You might try a couple of online free scans to see what they find. Here are 2, there are many others equally as good. BitDefender eTrust Both require IE not Firefox to run

Ben, I think that you should try to describe this animal a little better. What was frog-like about the body? What color was the body? What size? You said it had a purple head, but called it discolored. Worms don't have legs......was this critter more like a caterpillar or a snake?

Start your computer in safe-mode by tapping the F8 key while it is booting up. Once into safe-mode run the symantec scan.
Hopefully that'll get it because the backdoor trojan/worm will not be running.
Backdoor.Win32.Rbot.gen is also known as W32.Spybot.Worm in Symantec.

I always use the free AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to remove these persistent and resistant types of infections.
