Size of Standard vs Bantam Buff Orpington
Comments (2)The dimension of the tractor is 2' tall x 4' wide and 8' long. Fancifowl, the Standard Orpington is more than twice the size of a Bantam? If that's the case, I'll have to settle with the Bantam. But I really want the Standard Orpington, so I was wondering if I could just revise the tractor by simply adding another level to it. Rather than it being a 2' tall x 4 x 8 it will become 4' tall x 4 x 8. Fancifowl, as a nesting area, can I use a dog house?...See Moreadvise espalier vs standard
Comments (3)So far that semi-dwarf semi-espalier is working great. It's about 5' from the property line/fence and right next to my archery shooting range. Now that it is full grown branches barely extend over the property line and into my arrow lane but not bad at all. I keep all the branches from coming out of the central leader and let the side branches come out of the espaliered scaffolds. That seems to keep it from extending the full 8' or so it should from those sides. For an espalier new wood tree I think you have a choice of letting the new wood come out of your scaffolds and prune it all the way back to the scaffolds when you decide it gets out of bounds (naturally your boundry outwards and probably between scaffolds will need to be larger than on an old wood spur bearing tree) while you are also letting new wood branches come out to replace them. Or You can prune your scaffolds back to the leader and let them replace. That way kills the design advantage of having an old espalier with large scaffolds. I've never had lasting luck with new wood trees (plum in my case) because borers killed the trees young and curculio made it not worth trying again. I had the plan but not much experience. A friend has some plum trees and doesn't have borer problems so I may get some experience soon. Yes I've heard of multiple trees in one hole. I've never tried it but have had the idea of doing that and twisting the trunks together. When enough leaves have fallen off my trees to show their structure I'll be posting a picture of them....See MoreAging in place: Beyond wide hallways and doors
Comments (10)extra wide stairs even if it is just to the basement, b/c if you are in a w/c and decide to put a chair lift in the person assisting in transferring you from chair to chair would have to straddle/step over you if you don't have a wide enough stairway to allow them to walk around you. I too work home healthcare as a hospice nurse for over 5 years and everything she said is spot on. The fewer types of flooring the easier/better. Less risk of fall, no throw rugs, and even area rugs become problematic if you have to navigate around them. Lots of low storage so they don't have to feel like a burden asking someone to get something for them. As far as the hand held shower goes the ones that are adjustable like these pictures [https://www.houzz.com/photos/adjustable-showerhead-phbr0lbl-bl~l_8151[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/adjustable-showerhead-phbr0lbl-bl~l_8151) are great then if someone using the ADA shower is able to stand up they can adjust the height to better suit them. Also don't let builders tell you 30" is adequate and meets ADA requirements for door way widths...while it is an acceptable minimum getting wheelchairs through are a PITA. I plan on using 36" in our build. A lot really like the rocker style light switches as they are easier than a traditional switch, lever style or even oblong doorknobs are easier than a round doorknob. How will they open the window if in a wheelchair, the hand crank windows are easier for them, though my experience is in end of life care I know a few of our families used them and really liked them. I have seen a bathroom in a patient's home that was very cool, they had a large bathroom and modified it to be accessible for her husband. The cabinet "vanity" was on caster type wheels so she could move it out from under the sink and he could roll his w/c under and shave himself. They had a decorative top they could put on it if they wanted to leave it out as a piece of furniture or remove it and roll it back under the sink to look like a standard vanity. Reenforce walls where you might want hand rails like at the toilets and showers, they have some lovely ones now that don't look as industrial and blend a little better [https://www.houzz.com/photos/aging-in-place-transitional-bathroom-los-angeles-phvw-vp~8286386[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/aging-in-place-transitional-bathroom-los-angeles-phvw-vp~8286386) this gets the job done, but screams handicap accessible, something like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/26951297741626349/ blends but is just a functional https://www.pinterest.com/pin/394276142347540350/ https://www.pinterest.com/pin/132293307777113477/...See MoreAmerican Standard vs Kohler dual flush toilet
Comments (3)diadon- Even if you are in an area where Toto is not widely available, they are easy to order online. They are widely available where I live, but I ordered my most recent one from Amazon since it was the best price, even with shipping. There is nothing exotic about installation: you or a plumber will have no problem. I like them because they are simply a high quality, reliable product. I now have four of them in my house and have never had a clog in 10 years....See Morefrog_hopper
