Shower Ledge

We are putting in a new master bath and our shower is 42" x 60". I would like to have a ledge but I am unsure how big or high it should be. Right now I would use it to put shampoo etc on and to wash/shave my legs. I know you don't want it to be too small in case the need arises that you actually need it for a bench. I don't want it to take too much space in the shower and my other concern is that they only have the water for the shower head on the far wall and "if" you needed to use the bench, that probably is too far away. Should I just worry about that if and when the time comes?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My shower bench is 22" wide (side to side), 14.5" deep and 17.5" tall and it is just fine. One thing--you don't mention a handshower. I can't stress enough how important that is. Whether it is fixed or on a slide bar, it is crucial. There is no other reasonable way to clean your shower, for one thing--not to mention washing the dog, washing your feet, taking a shower without getting your hair wet, etc. etc.. And if you are concerned about needing to use the seat in case you become disabled later one, why would you ever want to hold yourself hostage to where a fixed shower head is today?

Thanks for the info. Is your shower 22" wide also? I am debating to either do the bench or just buy a small teak stool for the shower for now. I hadn't thought about a handshower, but I am looking at those options now.

I can't see the picture, but generally: A consistent tile patter that wraps around corners and maintains a "grid" of tile uniform tile sizes requires a couple of things. 1) the tile in question generally has to come with trim pieces that are the same dimensions as the field tile. That means the bullnose pieces, the corner bullnose pieces, any cove pieces or inside or outside corner pieces all have to come in that size. It's fairly standard to do 4x4 nominal tile with bullose and trim tile in 2x6, or 3x6 subway tile with bullnose and trim in 2x6, with corner bullnoses being as small as 2x2 nominal. Unless you specify otherwise and special order (usually) the specific trim pieces it is common to use the other types of trim. I am doing a bathroom right now that is going to be a perfect grid in all directions of full tile but it had to be planned that way in framing and we are still having to tweak it a bit. Complicating it is that the company stopped making one crucial piece of trim because it was uncommonly requested. But to get a ponywall to wrap in full tiles without pieces the finished ponywall needs to be the exact dimension for the tiles and this is not usually accomplished with 2x4 framing and drywall or cement board. The framing usually needs to be a bit smaller or larger to match up with tile dimensions.

Honestly, the new door is your best approach. And you want that before you mess with the curb. You will always have some water on the curb as it will splash off the body when showering in that size shower. Where's your squeegee? Open the door (once you have one) and squeegee or wipe off entire curb after showering, just as you should the rest of the shower for proper maintenance and longevity. Make sure to leave the door open when not in use and always run the ventilation fan after showering. Now having said all that, someone who knows what the are doing COULD use a hand grinder to grind the inside down for slope but really, for many reasons, removal of the glass would be the best approach to address that.

@tartanmeup - checking in to see what you decided re: corner shelves or one longer shelf. I want to add a shelf like you posted in my guest bathroom - on the wall across from the showerhead - out of the spray line (this is a tub/shower combo). If I was doing this in a larger walk-in shower, I would just have a false wall built on the lower part so it would be a ledge. However, it’s a tub/shower combo so that’s not happening. I decided against a niche (for a few different reasons) - decided to just add a few corner shelves since it’s a guest bathroom. HOWEVER, after I saw this, I’ve wanted a shelf: I was told to use Mapei Flexcolor CQ grout in order to avoid any inconsistent color issues. @palimpsest - is your shelf just held by the tiles above/below? Was it custom made for you? Last Q - how thick is it? @laurenn07 - your shower looks nice!

If you use glass, don't use clear glass. You won't want to see under it...even if it's just nice adhesive down there.

The shower is 60" wide but we live in an apartment building with funky structural columns that created a niche of 22" which is where the bench is. The best handshowers are made by Hansgrohe and Grohe. All of my shower heads, handshowers and sprays are Hansgrohe and they are great.

Also you should think about the shower bench as a design element. It breaks up the space nicely. A stand alone bench will work too. It is just an aesthetic decision. I didn't want to add another material to the mix so I did an integral bench. I love the look of the marble slab.

Our shower is a similar size to yours. About 5 ft long and 4 ft wide. The bench spans the short wall and is 1 ft deep. Its about 18" from the floor. I plan to use it for shaving, bottles, etc. I will rest my foot on it for now, but I've heard sitting while shaving when pregnant is a must. If you picture the rectangle of our shower laying with 5 ft along the top and bottom and 4 ft sides going up and down on the left and right...our shower door is in the bottom left corner with the water controls to the right and then the bench is along the far right. The rain shower is in the center of the shower, but the handshower is mounted directly to the right of the door (between the door and the bench). HTH.
