Niche with glass shelf

Our shower is finished with niche for shampoo bottles included. We had the niche built large so that we could put a shelf in it for a bar of soap. Our contractor told us to have the glass shower door people make a shelf for the niche. The question is, how wil it get installed into the niche if the niche is already tiled? Can my tiler install it or can the glass people do it for me? Any suggestions?

Hello Novice,
Well, my preferred method is to install the shelf as I'm installing the tile. This makes for cleaner lines and a more secure installation. After the fact, I suppose that the glass company could install a floating bracket for the shelf??? Why did your tile installer proceed without the shelf? Was there a long delay in receiving the shelf?

I think a minimal little bracket would look great, maybe to match your plumbing fixtures. Make sure you pitch the shelf toward the shower when you install it.

....it only looks like that since you pointed it out. Anyone else would be looking at what you put on the shelf. How many people are viewing your shower niche on a daily basis? Don't mess with the grout, unless you want to paint it pink.... I hope you will smile every time you walk in there and think of a cream sandwich. IT makes that shower YOURS. I have one grout line in my shower that is larger than the others. No one in the whole world will see it and say gee, that line is wider than the others... My tile installer built two long, narrow niches on either side of my shower head, and forgot to include the shelves in her plan. She has not grouted yet and she is hoping to find a way to use the 1/16" grout spaces to somehow install glass shelves in the spaces. She has mentioned using clear silicone caulk to keep them in place, but I see trouble with the whole idea, as there is really nothing to adhere the shelf TO. Please give me some ideas or hope? SHould I just ask her to take out the tiles from the niche and begin again with the shelves in mind? Many thanks! Lisa

Originally I was going to use the same tile as the rest of the shower - Philadelphia Travertine. The width of the niche is 20" so I was going to cut down 2 of my 12" pieces and have a seam. Decided I didn't want a seam, and my tile didn't come in 20", so I decided to go with custom cut granite. It wasn't cheap. I got 2 niche shelves - 5"x20", a curb - 5"x36", a 12"x12"x17" triangle for my small better bench, and a thicker 5"x24" threshold for the bathroom door and it cost $600! which I thought was ridiculously high, but decided to get them anyway. I'm very happy with that decision and the niche, along with most of the shower is tiled, and looks fantastic.

I'm not understanding if these shelves are over the sink, like an open medicine cabinet, or if they are somewhere else. So... Can you install a hinged cover to conceal the shelving, like a hinged picture frame? Looks like framed art on the wall, but it hinges open to reveal the content within. hinged artwork frame

I spoke with the glass guys and they can make tje shelf and install it for me. I'm so glad it was that easy since nothing else has been!
