Does the shelf in my niche look like a creme sandwich?

Hi all, my tile and grout guy just left. The shelf in niche reminds me of a creme cookie sandwich. Perhaps because he sandwiched two bullnose pieces together. I have never seen this look before. Is this right?!?!

Most people would have picked a piece of their granite or quartz for the shelves and for the shower curb. When you pick tile for that, you gotta have grout lines.

It took me a minute to see what you were talking about...I thought you meant the back tiling. So it doesn't jump out too much, if that helps! But yes, it looks just like a nice cream sandwich once you point it out. :)

Cena, I know you didn't imply to make a mint off of Creme de Menthe. (pun intended) Cutting any of it off seems such a shame. Unless I had someone I trusted enough to share a large amount with, someone who wasn't going to be prone to abandon or neglect it, it will probably stay at least mostly intact. In the spring I'll take a few cuttings for an extra plant. Maybe I can make it asthetically pleasing enough that it will be showable. The question is, what would I do with as many cuttings as it would take to make it a bit more even, or even not be low enough to be kitty salad? Just one branch would be enough to fill a 10 in pot with cuttings. I'd have to fill at least 5 or 6 gallon sized pots with cuttings, and then some. That's too many extras, even for someone who is prone to kill anything. I just didn't realize it was so big when I asked my husband's friend to get it for me. I joked with him about it being big enough to constitute as a passenger for the car pool lane hehe. I may have to rig up some sort of hanger or clear off the top of my metal shelf, but there is still the problem of it being lopsided. I wish I'd of known it was so large. For that price, I would have asked him to pick up Canary Princess also. Maybe she still has it, but I'd have to find someone to foster it until I could get down there to pick it up. Our friend is not plant savvy at all, so I can't ask him. Now that I've about filled my house with plants, I need to think about buying redwood lumber, screaning, and plastic for a plant shelter. That way CDM won't need to be trimmed at all, unless someone asks nicely. No more plants, Rhonda, not one more! No more plants, Rhonda, not one more! No more plants, Rhonda, not one more! We recently re-did the shower in my girls' bathroom, and I have one regret: The niche is too small. With two long-haired girls, they like the large pump-bottles of shampoo and conditioner ... and that leaves only one skinny spot for one more item. They have no real space for a bar of soap. I wish they either had two niches or one looong niche. No, the niche doesn't look messy -- but because they can't fit their body wash, shaving cream, etc. into the niche, they sit it on the shower floor. The floor does look messy. Also, be very specific with the tile installer before the work is started. I chose simple 12x12 beige tiles for the wall and a smaller 2x2 square for the flooring ... it seemed obvious to me that the 2x2 would go into the niche as an accent. However, the tiler went to some trouble to cut the larger tiles "just so" so that the lines would match ... and I walked in while he was doing it. He changed the niche to the 2x2 tile, but he clearly thought it was a mistake on my part. The moral: Don't assume everyone else agrees with your choices!

Copying my response from Tara's thread: We used the plain inexpensive Lenape ceramic corner shelves, two placed one above the other. They worked just beautifully, held a surprising amount of stuff (I could put three 1-quart bottles of soap/shampoo/etc. on one shelf, with room for toothbrush, toothpaste and razor) and I thought they looked very nice. Were I to do it again I'd put a third just for grins, because threes look nicer than twos IMO. They were only about $15 apiece at HD. Daltile/American Olean makes similar ones for about the same price but I thought they were "clunkier" looking than the Lenape shelves.

I too am hoping to go with the style linley has pictured. I have always loved the look of a fireplace and mantle but don't need or have one. This is a way to incorporate the homey feel of a fireplace into my kitchen. I prefer the look of the cabinets coming down to the counter but my second choice would be the corbels like rhome's design. I think that 9 inches on the sides of the cooktop to the cabinets would be the absolute minimum both for safety and convenience. Think about something boiling over and wanting to move it quickly to the side, if all the other burners were full. There wouldn't be room enough for the pot on the side. Obviously, codes are going to dictate the minimum clearance and I think 12 inches would be very good. Also having the cabinets that meet the counter be about half the depth of the counter top should help to keep it from feeling too confining, yet still give the look that you want.

We used a single piece of marble tile for all of our niche shelves (tops, bottoms, and sides as well). Your sandwiched bullnose tiles don't look terrible, just different from what I've seen.

I will say, that I am very impressed with the tile work surrounding and inside your niche--totally flush, lined up beautifully. Your tile guy appears to do very nice work! :)

I doubt I would've noticed if I hadn't been specifically looking. BTW, what is the tile inside the niche. Looks like it has a botanical motif?

I just had my niche tiled yesterday. I don't have a shelf in the middle, just a basic 12" x 12". Mine is edged with 1/4 round and it couldn't be matched up exactly with the surrounding field tile. But it looks fine. In reality, you'll have a head full of shampoo and just be happy to keep the soap out of your eyes.

We chose to use a thick piece of glass for the niche shelf to avoid the creme sandwich look.

You can buy stain for the grout after it is dry. I would not be overly concerned about it though.

....it only looks like that since you pointed it out. Anyone else would be looking at what you put on the shelf. How many people are viewing your shower niche on a daily basis? Don't mess with the grout, unless you want to paint it pink.... I hope you will smile every time you walk in there and think of a cream sandwich. IT makes that shower YOURS.

I have one grout line in my shower that is larger than the others. No one in the whole world will see it and say gee, that line is wider than the others...

Relax and I hope you will enjoy your new shower, w/o getting hungry whenever you shower!
