I thought of this after reading the other thread.
I've used APCs for several years now and have never installed their software. Really didn't feel the need since auto-shutdown protection is not that important to me. If the computer is on, I'm usually there. It's the battery back-up that I need. I can't afford to have an uncontrolled shutdown. Also, having yet another process running on the system all the time doesn't really excite me (I have enough already).
So now, the question. I've heard claims that, even without the software assist, the APC will still initiate a shutdown whenever the battery level becomes critically low. I've never put this to the test. Does anyone know? Even without the software, when a power failure does occur an icon pops up in the tray showing the battery level and run time remaining (in Windows). In Ubuntu, the icon showing the battery condition is displayed at all times.
