Looking for a good 30inch freestanding gas range around $2000.

DH is a chef, unfortunately 2k is our limit. Any good recommendations for something that preforms well and looks professional? I like the look of the Kitchenaid, but the reviews about the self cleaner were not good. Does anyone know if that issue was resolved with the newer models?

What about the GE profile with convection? Anyone have it. Because of space we have to do a microwave above it. Some day DH will have his big vent hood!

Or we could go with a slide in too. It seems to look more professional. With a slide in what happens to your backsplash when your cooking? DH is very messy when he cooks, I guess I'd have to have something that cleaned up easily.

I agree with your concern about the Kitchenaid. We have a Superba, and it has been a dog. The stove-top burners are reasonable, but the oven has always been troublesome. Ever since the first auto-clean cycle, the oven thermostat hasn't worked consistently. Sometimes it works in convection, sometime in bake, sometimes in broil, but never reliably. Last week, I ruined yet another roast, and only hours later spotted a BlueStar in Costco for $1999. It's a Costco-special 30 inch range with four burners, three of which are 15000 BTU. We're going to install it tomorrow.

I bought a PGB910 model last November and I am absolutely thrilled with it! The 910 is very simular to what you are looking at except that it has a warming drawer rather than a second oven which is really an electric element in the warming drawer. I didn't see the need for that. The 910 also has a full SS cooktop which gives it more of a "pro" look. Might be harder to clean, but I haven't found that to be a negative so far. The smooth shape of the SS cooktop has no nooks and corners that are hard to get at like my old range. The 910 is also several hundred $ less. I understand that the burners on either the 910 or 918 and "guts" so to speak are same as the Cafe models. I do love the heavy cast iron full width grates. Oven is hot and stable with in 20 degrees (I have checked it with a laser thermometer). Simmer burner is really nice, as is the 17,500btu powerburner. Only negative so far are the burner knobs, we do pizza (Neopolitan -- thin and crispy) a lot and run oven at 500 degrees for over an hour at a time. The SS covers over the plastic knobs have warped or kinda wrinkled a bit. Too much heat I think (and I haven't contacted GE about it yet). We do a lot of cooking too. I would buy it all over again without hesitation.. Price was really attractive. Originally I was going to buy a Bluestar (for a new home) but plans changed and we are still here. I could have bought 3, maybe 4 GEs for the same price as a Bluestar. Someone will get a very nice range when we sell the old place in the future. BTW these are built in Mexico... don't let that stop you I think the fit and finish is very good.

"I can't afford a Viking but would love similar quality" No, you wouldn't. You really wouldn't. You're going to need to give a lot more information to get specific suggestions: 1. What is your budget? 2. What finish? Stainless? 3. What types of cooking do you do the most? Are you more of an oven cook or burner cook? Do you want to use a griddle or do indoor grilling? Do you wok? Can? 4. Are you willing to deal with a powerful hood and the associated complications, like makeup air? 5. Are your pans ferromagnetic (induction compatible) and if not, would you be open to replacing them with ones that are? 6. How important is the visual feedback of a gas flame? 7. How important is ease of cleaning? 8. Do you have kids? Are you concerned about safety? 9. Controls. Do you need knobs, or would touchpads be OK? I'm sure I missed a bunch of important ones but that should be a good start.

I suggest posting this question on the Appliances Forum - with more information. What features are must-haves? Nice-to-haves? Fuel (gas, traditional electric, induction)? If electric...Smoothtop? Coils? If gas...sealed burners? Etc. You might also explain why you're so anti-GE. I had a GE free-standing electric stove that was well-used for 13 years that looked and functioned as it did on day 1. My experience with GE is that they make very good middle-of-the road cooking appliances, OK refrigeration, and lousy DWs. I also suggest researching appliances on AJ Madison - they have a large selection of brands and levels.

Our 10 year old Maytag Gemini gas range needs replacement. We really liked our Gemini, which was trouble free til a spilled cup of tea shorted out the ignition and the burners could not be removed. The only problems we really had were: not enough room to use all 4 burners at the same time with large pans. I believe that is because the control knobs were on the top surface right side, so you lose top surface area. My instinct is to buy the same item to replace it. The current Gemini model runs $1500. It looks much like the one we have, with a few tweaks. It DOES have controls on the front. I now think that will be a plus, whatever we end up choosing. Saves space on the top cooking surface, at least. It has 5 burners instead of 4, for example. Seems like many stoves in this range have 5 burners. Though I don’t know how useful that is. How will you fit all the pans on? It's not uncommon for me to have 4 pans running at the same time, and still need one more. But are there better brands and options? This stove has 2 ovens, and we use the smaller oven constantly, for broiling mostly. I would want the same feature. On these forums people are mostly talking about the high end ranges, which are all wider than the 30” space we have. On another thread someone mentioned a site called AJ Madison to compare. I will still probably buy from our local huge, excellent appliance store, where we have bought all our appliances. But I need to do my homework going in. Plugging in my parameters (30”, double oven, gas, under $2000 (I can go higher but I’d want a good reason, for a range of that small size)) the brands I see are LG, GE, and Whirlpool. No problems with them, but they were all really basic and were replaced 11 years ago when we did our kitchen remodel. Any 30-years-old reference point I might have is probably irrelevant now. So I would appreciate and information you might have to help me narrow my search between these brands. I am having trouble posting comments. I can originate a post, but not answer, even on my own thread. I have been in touch with Houzz and none of their suggestions worked. I think its a browser incompatibility issue. A Blue Star at Costco?! I just ran and checked their website and could find no mention. Please, please share anything you can. Was it a short-term special?

Costco is apparently selling Bluestar across Canada. We bought ours in Calgary. There were three left in the store just last Saturday. This model does not appear on the BlueStar website, so I suspect that it is a custom model made specially for Costco. I'm very pleased with it so far.

peter-a, I just checked costco.ca, and unfortunately it's not even listed on *there*. Maybe I'll try calling the biggest costco around here to see if we can find one.

On the other thread you say that there are no touch-pad programmable controls...the oven works by knobs too? Actually, the touch-pad is what has given out on the Amana, *twice*, so the less 'electronics' the better, IMO. And what's the highest btu burner? And is the oven convection? And is there a warming drawer? Oh, so many questions! Thanks for posting--I'll have something to dream about tonight :) (sick and sad, I know :))

The Costco Bluestar has four burners, three of which are 15000 BTU and the last one is a 9000 BTU simmer burner. The oven does have a convection fan. There is a broiler element in the top of the oven, but I have yet to try it. And there is no warming drawer. Where our previus range had a warming draw, the Bluestar has a fixed toe-panel. The oven burner is located under the oven, where a warming drawer would otherwise be located. Another thing: the grates are cast iron, but are not really "full-motion" because the 5 inch wide space between the left burners and the right burners is occupied by a stainless-steel spacer. You can buy cast iron filler grates for about $250 direct from Bluestar, but I'm in saving mode right now.

Our Costco has these ranges on the floor ready to go, but they are not available on-line at Costco.ca

I agree completely with you about unneccesary electronics and other "features"! The only controls on my range are four knobs for the burners, one knob for the oven, a switch for the oven light and a switch for the convection fan.

My wife and I are seriously considering a bluestar range from costco. Can I please get feedback good or bad from people who have bought a bluestar from costco?
