Show your golden oldies. . .

This little couple was one of the first Christmas decorations we used a married couple. This is actually their 30th anniversiary and to be honest, I haven't put this little couple out for many years. They just seemed too cheesy and dated. My kids (ages 28,27, and 23) on the other hand love these guys and everyone has said they want them when we are gone. Don't ya just love it when they talk about you in the past. Of course its always a lighthearted conversation. Mr. and Mrs. Claus were always sitting exactly where they are now on that halltree. Our previous home did not have a fireplace and their stockings were hung from the hooks on the halltree. So for many Christmases Mr. and Mrs. Claus were there as they were sitting on the floor checking out their stocking stash. We now have two grandchildren and a third on the way. I think it's time to bring this little couple back out, so they can make memories for our next generation. So as the title states, do you all have an golden oldies that you cannot part with.

Here's mine.
For a few years, when I was little (during the 50s), the gas stations (We called them "service stations" back then. I suppose that's because they actually provided you with service.) had mailboxes for children to mail their letters to Santa. I remember one that hung between the tanks at the local Shell my parents went to. This one is a 76 Union mailbox (the logo is under the gold bow). I found it (or should I say, "It found me.")shortly after we moved into our first and only house. I paid $20 for it back then - far, far more than I could afford at the time, but I've never regretted it. It's falling apart, but I treat it ever so gently and hope the rust won't spread. Recently I found an old photo from my hometown newspaper (me, mailing a letter to Santa) and have started to display it next to the mailbox.

No I did not paint, that would make them even more special to the kids. A good friend's Mother at the time ran a little ceramic shop out of her garage. I fell in love with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and she gave them to me as a gift.

This Santa cookie jar is our families most treasured 'oldie' - I painted it back in 1973 when my kids were 3 and 5. Most of the dodads around it are almost as old or older. I decorated the little tree in the late 70's. Both kids want the entire scene - it has been a part of their Christmases ever since even after they left home. It splits with Santa's arms and the arms of the chair on the top part - base of the chair and Santa's legs are the bottom part. I have threatened to give the top to one child and the bottom to another and each year at Christmas they HAVE to get together to put the cookie jar back together again thus assuring the family never splits - lol For now it stays in my home and they have to come and see me to see the cookie jar - :) ....

Mine is a little plastic bell with gold cords hanging down. It was quite inexpensive to begin with and is probably at least 50 years old. It was my in-laws', and we hang it on the front door every year. (Our wreath goes on the wall next to the door). Christmas is definitely a place for sentiment and tradition to trump "tasteful," and family memories like that are really precious. And look at it this way, there's a big collectible market for vintage decorations--not that you'd ever part with these, of course!

From 'my' childhood - I have a cluster of 4 metal bells - one each red, green, gold and blue and are strung together with the original curling ribbon - they always hung on our front door while growing and now that I have my Mom living with me I hang them on my side door because it gets the most use ....

Lynne, I also have several of those pixie ornaments. My mom gave them to me after she and my dad stopped putting up large trees. She gave me all her ornaments plus I have quite a few from my mother-in-law that are dated back in the 50's.

Lynne, I have some of the kneehugger elves too. I use them on a small tree that has vintage ornaments on it. I bought the ones that I have now last year on ebay, but I remember us having some on the tree when I was growing up.

Here's my golden oldie...it's a windchime that has a sprig of fake mistletoe at the bottom of it. On top are a boy and girl kissing. My mother bought this for me at a five and dime store when I was a little girl. I thought it was so pretty. It's the the only thing that I have left of my family's decorations from when I was growing up.

love2weed, I think Mr & Mrs Claus are never dated. Just ask your children. LOL And what a cute idea to hang the stockings from the halltree hooks.

OA, I remember "service stations" too, but I never saw one with Santa mailboxes and we had Shell stations. And how perfect that you have a pic of yourself as a child actually putting your letter into one of the mailboxes. That is a treasure for sure.

Lynn, That is a great story about your Santa cookie jar. And love the idea of giving each child 1/2 of it. What a great Christmas tradition that would make! Love everything on your shelf.

Dreamgoddess, What a sweet story about your little kissing windchime. I know you must really treasure having it.
