For tile gods -- not sure whether to laugh or cry

I'm hoping that this will brighten your day, BillV, Mongo, and others who know about tile, while serving as a cautionary tale for those who don't.... One of my clients hired a carpet/floor covering company to install tile. Client hired me because carpet co. used two different dye lots, wasn't happy. We removed some tile samples today and found the carpet co. used a hdwd floor installation method for tile. Nothing was done right. From bottom to top: concrete slab (ok); plywood (we don't know why); hardiebacker (not staggered, no room between pieces, funky nails); white thinset with consistency of dried out old bread (crumbled when you looked at it sideways) OR gray thinset not attached to tile; hollow spots; tile.

In my state, a license to install floor coverings specifically excludes ceramic tile. I wonder why? :) On a positive note, my client has a great case. However, she'd rather have the job done right the first time.
