samsung vs electrolux CD fridge

Looking at refrigerators in this remodel and I've been attracted to the samsung RFG237. Appliance lady said LG and Samsung are made by the same company. Haven't heard good things about LG, but have heard good things about Samsung. The model I like gets good reviews. So instead she has recommended th Electrolux CD EI23BC56iS - which in most of the reviews I've read doesn't rank very highly with consumers because of numerous issues.

thoughts on the LG/Samsung owner company and quality or any other CD recommendations? I've seen good reviews here at GW for this Samsung.

The appliance lady is wrong. Samsung & LG are completely different companies. They may use the same company to assemble their units, although I don't know this for a fact, but the companies themselves are not connected.
As the Samsung CD/FD, I've had mine since October 2010 and I'm very satisfied with it.
I can't speak to Elux.

LG and Smasung are both Korean, but that is the only thing they have in common. They are as different as Ford and GM.

I have the Electrolux 36" CD fridge, except we opted for the icemaker not on the door, but in the freezer box, and no water tap.(EI23BC36IS) We have could not be happier now with it after 2 months of use. It is whisper quiet, lots of ice, produce keeps very well. It is very big for a counter depth, and we have more door shelve space because we kept the icemaker in the freezer box. The meat drawer is a really good size and the freezer shelves work well. We eat 98% of the time at home, mostly scratch cooking and have zero complaints about this fridge. Anyone I've spoke to with Electrolux fridges that have zero problems, always kept the icemaker in the freezer, those with problems had the door dispenser. I would save a few bucks and skip this feature as the freezer drawer icemaker is very fast and reliable.

I second the advice to look at other sources than Sears. I see that you are in Canada, and I am in the states, so I don't know if what I have found out about the Sears pricing applies or not, but here is what I have found about the Samsung counter depth: The Samsung website says the list price is $2900. Sears says the list price is $3400! Lowes and Best Buy agree with the Samsung price. Lowe's has an exclusive with Samsung on a 2nd ice maker in the bottom freezer. It can be turned off separately from the top in-the-door ice maker. It takes up a bit of space in the freezer (and freezer space is certainly at a premium!), but we have decided that we want the Lowe's version. People that have bought this fridge generally really like it, but the small ice container is a complaint. The Lowe's salseman told us that they should have 10% off for Presidents Day (I suppose not in Canada!) and you can get another 10% off with a coupon at the Lowe's moving website (google it, and you don't HAVE to be moving). We are also getting a Kitchenaid dishwasher (note that Sears has higher list price on these as well, by $50 to $90) and I think the stainless on the Kitchenaid is a bit brighter than the Samsung, but I'm not going to let that change my decision. I want to get the best appliance in each category (at my budget), and the Samsung fridge gets great reviews. I plan to hang a hand towel on the dishwasher bar to hopefully hid the differences some, and my dishwasher is not that close to my fridge. I plan to get the new Electrolux slide-in induction range and the GE Advantium over-the-range micro/speed cook, so I am all over the place with appliance brands. Oh well.

Hi Mark, I have the RFG2997AARS. I can't give a review of its long term reliability because we've only had it since just before Christmas. Like you, I have four young children, ages 6-11. We had a side by side for 14 years and I never liked the design. I did quite a bit of research on the mid-range fridges and decided that I liked the layout of the Samsung the best. In terms of features, I definitely wanted water on the door. I would have preferred not having an exterior ice machine, in order to get water on the door I had to have the ice too. My kids drink mainly water, so the exterior water was important to me - I didn't want my fridge being constantly opened so that they could get a drink of water. One thing to mention about the water dispenser (and I'd read this in reviews b/f buying). It is fine for filling glasses, but it can be tricky with water bottles. Regular size water bottles are okay, but you have to make sure you get the mouth of the bottle under the spout. Taller water bottles that don't fit into that space on the door won't really work b/c they won't fit properly under the spout. This has not really been an issue with me, despite having four active sports-playing kids and needing to constantly fill bottles. I only have a few that don't fit so I just fill a cup then pour into the water bottle. (Again, not an issue with regular sized bottles, just oversize/tall bottles). I personally do not think the water/ice dispenser takes up too much room. I was concerned initially while researching, but I was gaining so much space moving up to this fridge from my SxS that I haven't noticed the ice maker being a space hog at all! In fact, I have TONS of room in my fridge. I thought at first that I might be annoyed by lack of storage space on the doors for condiments and such, but I still have plenty of room. They have even fitted shelving around the dispenser on the left door - I can fit smaller items on those shelves and it works. The drawers are plenty big for fruits and veggies. The Cool Select pantry I love - we have a variety of cheese that I keep on one side, then I use the other side for meats like turkey, pancetta, prosciutto, bacon. This drawer has helped keep my fridge so much better organized than my last fridge. Some complain about losing things in the freezer drawer. I have not had that issue. I can actually find things more easily than in my old SxS which was so narrow I was constantly having to move things around to fit them. I keep the things we use the most (frozen waffles, frozen bread, etc) in the top basket and then store lesser used things like frozen meats on the bottom compartment. There is a nice narrow compartment on top just inside the door that I use to store smaller things like freezer packs for my kids lunches, butter, etc. Someone mentioned noise. My fridge is EXTREMELY quiet. The only noise I ever hear, and it's infrequent, is the ice dropping when a new tray is made. That is loud and can be quite jarring if you are sitting around in a quiet house (not often here with four kids!). Made my dog jump the first time he heard it, but it doesn't happen frequently. The fridge itself makes no noise - my old fridge hummed when it was running. I didn't notice it while it was running as I'd grown accustomed to it, but when it stopped I'd notice the quiet! This one is not like that! Other comments: I wondered if having to sometimes open TWO doors instead of one to access the fridge would bother me. I think this is personal preference. It doesn't bother me at all. I tend to know where things are that I use frequently and can just open the door on the side where it is located. Occasionally I do have to open both doors to look for something, but I don't find that a pain. This morning I had both hands full and had to open both doors b/c the things I was putting away were on opposite side of the fridge - wasn't an inconvenience even with full hands. IN HINDSIGHT: I might possibly have gone with the second exterior drawer. I contemplated it, it was more expensive, but wasn't sure it was worth the expense. In hindsight, perhaps it was. I access the deli drawer frequently and you do have to open both fridge doors in order to open the pantry door. Not a big deal and I can easily live with it, but it might have been nicer to just have it be an exterior drawer. The produce drawers do not have to have both doors open in order to access though, just the pantry door b/c it's wide and cannot be pulled out unless both doors are open. Overall, I LOVE this fridge. Again, I can't speak for its reliability since we haven't had it long, but in terms of features/functions, it has been great for our family of six. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer!

I understand about the curved doors and handles on this fridge. Because of its placement in my kitchen (near the pantry door, at the end of a line of stuff), its not a problem for me that the fridge sticks out a bit. This could be a problem if the fridge were in the middle of a line of appliances, though. OTOH, any (most?) FD fridge needs clearance on each side, so both main doors can open fully (i.e., 180 degrees) -- particularly for removing interior shelves and bins while cleaning. It depends how the door hinges work -- how far the doors bend back when opened fully. This may be easy to overlook when you see a row of fridges in a store. I've had my Samsung #238 running since about Labor Day, and overall am very pleased with it. Its very quiet (compared to an ancient Amana that had gotten pretty noisy over the past year), and I like the interior LED lighting fine. [I understand a local repair service deals with Samsung stuff, but haven't needed them as yet. Service may be an issue: To be safe, its wise to verify local service availability for this (or any) brand.] If I have any complaint, its been with Samsung's "Energy Saver" feature. A button somehow makes the fridge operate on less energy. I've tried using it twice, but both times after a few days condensation appeared along the center vertical crack between the two main doors. [When I turn Energy Saver off, this condensation disappears.] The first time I turned this feature on the fridge had been running for a few days, and so was presumably fully chilled. The second time, we left town for a few days and the fridge was not opened or used. Maybe I won't be able to use Energy Saver at all, or perhaps it depends on seasonal variation in humidity -- not sure yet, but I can't imagine what else it might be. This is a minor concern for me, but it may be more important to other potential buyers.

I just made this same decision and went with the Samsung. The electrolux is not energy star rated, a big minus for me. Also, I didn't like the way the freezer door operated and it seemed like it would be tough to put stuff in/get stuff out. A lot of the french doors seem to have this issue. The Samsung is just arranged better and in using it for a few days I can tell you it's really nice, the freezer door especially. The ice/water dispenser is great. I did not want a huge shelf there because my previous fridge had one and it always looked awful-- a major place to gather dust/dirt. And I never leave a glass there and go walking around the room while it fills anyway. So basically you hold the glass there, do your thing, and that's that. Hope this helps!

Just to throw another wrench in the works, you might also think about a "Kenmore Elite" CD fridge which is really a Samsung with just a Kenmore tag on it.
We have had ours for about 5 months so far and love it.
Usual price was a bit over $3000 but we bought it during a 30% off sale and got free delivery, so paid just barely over $2000 delivered for a Samsung CD.
We got the one with the really nice LCD Display with ice maker and water in the door.

The only problem I have with it is the drawers are rather short in length BUT that is a problem I think with ALL CD fridges so not really a fault with the fridge itself as it is just a slight inconvenience with CD fridges in general.

It is very quiet, in fact I cant even tell it is running at all 98% of the time and once the ice bucket fills up you hardly and rarely even hear the ice maker either.

It has a "twin cooling" compressor which separates the freezer from fridge so that you get the proper humidity in your fridge so that veggies and such last longer.

Same nice Samsung fridge, 100% made by Samsung but you get the usually easier to deal with Sears repair service IF that is ever needed.

If you are looking for a side-by-side counter depth, there are two new units out by KitchenAid that are quite nice, though so far I've only been able to see the standard-depth KSF26C6XYY version in person.

The first counter depth KSC23C8EYY is the regular 69" tall and is 22.2 cu/ft capacity.
The KSC24C8EYY model is 72" tall and 23.6 cu/ft capacity.
It really just depends on the height of your opening.

When I had my kitchen remodel done in 2006, we had the opening at 73" tall, so we could fit a 72" counter depth fridge. We got the KSCS25FS which was the current model at that time. The only thing we don't like about it is the water/ice dispenser area on the front isn't very tall, so you have to tilt tall glasses under it. But the newer models have much taller dispenser areas, and the actual ice maker is now on the door over the bucket.

When I was at Sears a few days ago, I did see the Kenmore Elite model that Nunyabiz1 has pictured above. It was about $2900 I think, and the one without the LCD display was $2500. So you're paying a few hundred more for the LCD that can show the current weather and stuff like that. I don't think that is something I would use that much...and is just one more "expensive part" that could break over time.

We've had our Electrolux EI23BC36IS for over a year with zero problems and still love it! The size is perfect for my family of four - plenty of room without food getting lost in the back.

I also read some of the poor reviews on Electrolux refrigerators, but like split767 stated, most of the issues were related to indoor ice makers.

Our friends have a Kitchen Aid counter depth S X S and love it . LG and Kenmore are the same...LG makes the Kenmore... LG is not American made and it may be hard to get parts if they break...you will have to wait longer. Although Kenmore is made by them you can get those parts sooner. That is what Sears told us

Kenmore is made by LG. Told last friday by Sears there is currently a 3 moth wait on parts. Samsung is the better of the Korean brands. I looked at the Electrolux, but I really wanted ice and water in the door, and reviews are not pretty on this forum. My current 15 year old Kenmore (Whirlpool) has it and I have never had a problem with this frige. I needed stainless to go with my new Culi, so my son will get the old one. Maytag, Kitchen Aid, Jen Air and Whirpool are all made by Whirlpool, which has an excellent reputation. I opted for the Kitchen Aid Architect II FD refrig with ice and water in the door, I really liked the compact ice maker and the rollers on the crisper drawers. I think you wouldd be happy with the Samsung if your choice is between it and the Electrolux which is made by Fridgidare who has a well deserved bad reputation.

Pretty much every body makes something for Sears.
Our Refrigerator is definitely made by Samsung though.
It says it right on the model # sticker, made in Korea and the model # starts with "401" which means made by Samsung.
Up until this year it used to mean just a Microwave made by Samsung but now they also make Ref.

Also just for the sake of saying so "Kichenaid" is made by "Whirlpool".
In fact if its an American Made appliance you want then you basically have 2 main choices, either Whirlpool or GE, and I think most Viking stoves are still made in Miss. but many of their Refs, DW and MW are made elsewhere.
Whirlpool makes basically everything because they have bought out several other companies.
I know they own Admiral, Amana, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, Maytag and Kichenaid and probably a few others.
So when you buy that Kichenaid you are actually buying a Whirlpool. That isn't a bad thing though because if you look at and believe Consumer Reports whirlpool is usually one of if not THE most reliable brand for several appliances.
On the flip side though GE is usually one of the worst.
Samsung is usually right in the middle or in the top 3 for reliability.

I bet there are probably about 25-30 "brands" of appliances out there and all are being made solely are at least in part by about 5-6 actual manufacturers.

Most American brands have been bought up and monopolized by Whirlpool.

No herring maven, Fidgidare makes the Electrolux fridge and General motors makes Buick among others. Kenmore is made by the lowest bidder. Their current ones are made by LG, in the past they have been Fridgidare, Whirpool and others. I belive they were also Samsung just before they switched to LG. Not all current Kenmore appliances are made by the same manufacturer. Not all Whirlpool appliances are made in the USA either. At least the bottom drawer refrigerators supposedly are though. Just Sayin!!!!

Check out the KitchenAid counter depth french door refrigerator. The water is behind the door, so the front looks smooth and shiny! It's the largest of the average refrigerator brands for counter depth french door. It's about $1000 more than standard depth, but that's what they all are.

That is pure nonsense that all current Kenmore fridges are made by LG.
Unless maybe I am misunderstanding.
Fact is that Kenmore Fridges are made by MANY different manufacturers, some by Whirlpool, ours is without question by Samsung, and I am sure some by LG.
Sears Kenmore is made by MANY different manufacturers, far more now than they used to be, years ago pretty much ALL were made by Whirlpool.

Nunyabiz1, you said your refrigerator is 5 months old, so it is indeed a Samsung, you should be very happy. I have been told by more than one source including Sears that their current refrigerators are made by LG, not that they are bad either, but when they go it's usually something big like the compressor. I do not disagree that there is a possibility that there is currently more than one manufacturer that makes refrigerators for Kenmore, so make sure you know what you are getting if you go that route.

Not a chance, the Sears person is either a loon or pulling your leg.
You can go to the Sears website right now and put in just Kenmore under the brand and bring up 167 different refrigerators they sell, no way in hell they are ALL made by LG.
Not to mention my cousin works for Whirlpool and has for the past 15 years, he makes Sears Kenmore refrigerators every week for them, they also still sell the same Fridge I bought 5 months ago which is a Samsung so that is at least 2 other manufacturers other than LG and I would guess several others are still making fridges for them also.
The ONLY fridges made by LG for Sears start with the model number "795".

"Most" Kenmore Fridges are still made by Whirlpool, though not as big a percentage as it used to be, they used to be almost all made by Whirlpool and a couple by Amana, and Frigidaire but now whirlpool bought out Amana.

Just go by this chart to see what the manufacturer is on any Kenmore fridge you might want to buy, id stick with either Whirlpool or Samsung personally.

You will note, in my last post I said, "I do not disagree that there is a possibility that there is currently more than one manufacturer that makes refrigerators for Kenmore, so make sure you know what you are getting if you go that route." And I do agree with you, stick with the Samsung or Whirlpool.
